Welcome

This is the journal of House Alean'ana, a place for all my drow Anthrobreedables. Any non-drow or non-Underdark characters will be placed in a different journal.

Rules:
1. The characters from this journal will rp only with other drow or Underdark inhabitants. Sorry, but they're not interested in leaving their world.
2. I'd like to keep the rp in the Underdark rp forum, not the journal. Please don't post rp entries here.
3. On the other hand, rp invitations in the journal are more than welcome. Please do so^^.
4. If I'll ever think that more needs to be added, I'll do so.

RP prompts

For the first sister:
Prompt: You and your sister have been trained to work together from babies, to better the family. As such, you're used to knowing everything the other sister does. Oddly, lately, your sister seems to have a secret. What is your reaction, and what do you do?

Sisters: Left: Ilivdiira, Right: Elvdiira, of the house Alean'ana

Mission objective: Ilivdiira

Entry:
In the society where rank is everything, feelings always have to take second place. That's what we were taught.
But this doesn't apply to us.
The girl was lying on her bed, and observing the ceiling. It's not like she couldn't sleep, she just didn't want to. She was deep in thought, listening to the calming breath of her sister. This was a hard day for both of them, but especially for Elvda...
They're overworking her... Recently she's rarely sleeping in her bed, she has to practice so much... Poor, poor Elvda...
Ilivdiira shifted her position a bit, so she could look at her sister's sleeping face. There was a small wrinkle on her forehead... Is she having nightmares?
Why can't I be there with her...
It was the wish of their mother, that the sisters took separate paths in their lives. Ilivdiira became a warrior, and Elvdiira...
...now, she is a priestess...
Why can't I be there with her?!
We're twins! We were born the same day, we should be able to choose the same paths! It would be beneficial for the house!
And I would be able to protect her!
Because she knew already that something was wrong with her sister. No other priestess was taken for training for so long.
Did they decide that she's...not good enough?
Ilivdiira's blood suddenly got cold. If that was what happened... Then her sister could be in great danger.
I have to help her.
~*~
This was a pretty risky thing to do.
If the high priestess decides that my questions are offending her...
I am just a mere warrior, with so little power! I am doing my best, for my House and for my sister... But Helixa is the high priestess, and she won't let me forget that. Even though she's my sister. She barely talks to me at all, seeing herself as far more greater than me!
And she has the right to feel so. She brought great honor, obtaining such a high rank in such an early age... But now, she doesn't want to have anything to do with us, who weren't so talented. If I anger her...
I have to do it.
Ilivdiira waited for her sister to exit her quarters. And as soon as she did, she quickly bowed.
"What is it, Ilivda? I'm in a hurry." Helixa looked at her, uninterested. Ilivdiira quickly raised her head, and asked.
"I am sorry to disturb you, noble sister. I only wanted to ask about Elvdiira's progress. I know you lead her training sometimes, is she doing good?" Please say yes... Please, please say yes...
"As good as she always was, not that it matters. Why are you asking me this petty questions? You could've talked to any of the priestesses who train with her, though I still fail to see why are you so concerned with my opinion on her." The girl almost made a sigh of relieve, but stopped herself just before it. Never show your weaknesses.
"If she is doing well, then why does she need so many extra training sessions?"
"..that's the problem?" Helixa laughed. "Did she come crying to you about the extra hours she had a week ago? If she did, then maybe she really isn't fit for the position.."
"No, no she didn't... I just wanted to know.." Ilivdiira quickly bowed, trying to hide her widened eyes. "I am sorry for taking your time." after that, she quickly walked away.
A week ago?! Then what about the night two days ago, and the two nights earlier?! Elvda went to the practice with Helixa, she said that...
...she said...
But that night two weeks ago, when I wanted to accompany her on her way... She said 'no' then... And then I was wondering why she picked the longer way...
The girl's footsteps became quicker. She didn't know where she was going anymore, the only thing she could feel right now was her slowly crumbling faith.
Because she had a feeling, that it was Elvdiira, not Helixa, who lied.
~*~
"I'm afraid I can't accompany you today, Ilivda." Elvdiira smiled to her sister, and shook her head. "It seems I didn't do good enough today. Helixa requested that I should stay for the night in the practice chamber." The sigh she made was pretty convincing. But Ilivdiira still heard Helixa's words, echoing in her mind... She tried her best to put on an encouraging smile, and hugged her sister.
"I'm sure you'll do just fine, just concentrate on the training, Elvda... And come back to me quickly, I'll be waiting..."
Elvdiira smiled, and hugged back her sister. "I'll do my best. But don't wait for me, I have a feeling this will take long..."
Ilivdiira watched her sister leave the room, and then slowly counted to one hundred. After that, she carefully opened the door, and for the first time in her life, followed her sister unnoticed.
~*~
TO THE SURFACE?!
Ilivdiira couldn't believe her eyes when she saw Elvdiira leaving her house. But when she went into the tunnel...
...I had no idea there's a tunnel to the surface so close...
She had to be really careful right now. There was no place to hide so she had to make a lot of distance between the two of them. And she almost missed the place where her sister took a turn. She went that way, took a few steps...
...and saw the moon.
This...this is unbelievable.
She was staring at it...she thought it took hours. But it was only few moments. And then she heard music.
She looked that way, and saw a group of drow, dancing. Her sister was one of them.
No... Spider Queen, please, no...
Ilivdiira felt chills on her back, and stared in disbelief. Because she already knew what it meant.
~*~
"You betrayed our House."
She watched her sister's face getting pale, as she realized that her secret has been discovered.
"Ilivda... This is not what you think..."
"I have a feeling this is exactly what I think, sister. You've joined.. No, not joined. Are thinking of joining the followers of the cursed Moon Maiden."
"You don't know how it is here! Ilivda, this... this is completely different from what we thought..."
"Elvdiira, you are a PRIESTESS!" She shouted, and watched her sister shiver. When did it come to that? When did her precious little Elvda stop talking with her about her feelings, and turned to these...these traitors? "You are a priestess to Lloth! Did you think no one will notice, when you'll suddenly lose your powers? I'm surprised this didn't yet happened!"
"Actually, sister, I..." Her voice got more quiet "I was thinking of...staying with them."
"You...you what... Sister, please... Please tell me this is just a joke... That you're... You're infiltrating their group... That's what you're doing, right..? To gain their trust... And to kill them...."
Elvdiira shook her head. "No, sister. I've already decided. I will stay here, now that you know..." She looked Ilivdiira in her eyes, and suddenly, her eyes widened, and she smiled. "Sister! Now that you know, you can stay with me!"
"What... what are you talking about, Elvda...? The House..."
"The House is just using us, sister, don't you see?! We were taken away from each other by force when we were just children, when we should be always together! Well, now we CAN be together! Sister, please... Stay with me..." Elvdiira extended her arms towards her sister, and looked her deep in the eyes. "...stay with me..."
...stay...with...me...
The words echoed in her head. Ilivdiira's mind became blurred... She needed to concentrate.. She needed to think... To make her sister understand, go back, forget about this nonsense...
...we can be together...
...rank is everything...
...the house is using us...
...you live for the house...
...feelings come second...
...sister...
Ilivdiira slowly reached to her sister, saw the smile of relief and happiness appearing on her face, and a moment later, they were both in a tight hug.
"Oh, sister, I knew you would choose wisely..." Elvdiira started crying, slowly carrasing her sister's neck and arms. "I knew you would."
Ilivdiira also cried, as she hugged her sister... Her beloved sister... "I did." She said in a quiet voice."
And then she thrusted her dagger into her twin sister's back.
She watched her eyes widening in shock and disbelief, and held her, while her life was slowly escaping her body. And when it finally did, she let go of it, and turned back to the tunnel.
Mother has to know of all this.

For the second sister:
Prompt: You and your sister have been trained to work together from babies, to better the family. As such, you're used to knowing everything the other sister does. Oddly, lately, your sister seems to have a secret. What is your reaction, and what do you do?

Sisters: Left: Ilivdiira, Right: Elvdiira, of the house Alean'ana

Mission objective: Elvdiira

Entry:
And just where might she be?
Elvdiira was walking through the house, looking for her sister. They had a job to do, and they should do it fast.
And now where is the girl hiding?
She felt a bit annoyed with her sister. It's been already the second time that she needed her for an important mission, but couldn't find her. Just what in the name of Lloth is she doing?!
She made another circle, getting closer to her sister's room, she was here few minutes ago, but who knows, maybe...
Suddenly the door opened, and Ilivdiira went out from her room
..what..? But I checked inside a moment ago... Seems she came back pretty fast...
"Sister, I was looking for.."
"Oh, sorry, Elvda... I just woke up, did my nap take too long?
The girl was going to say something jokingly, but when she heard these words, she froze.
...a lie? Elvda?
"Were you...sleeping in the back room again?" She asked cautiously. Yes, that must be it, she didn't look too much into the back room, assuming that her sister wouldn't be there. But if she...
"No, silly, I was in my bed. Why? Did something happen..?
"No...nothing. Nothing happened, sorry." She murmured, and walked away. She completely forgot about their job right now.
Because she checked the bed few moments ago. And it was empty.
~*~
What is that girl up to?
She observed through the window, as her sister was walking outside, clothed in a long coat.
Obviously she doesn't want anyone to recognize her...
There was only one thing she could do.
Elvdiira put on her own cloak, and sneaked out of the house, in the same direction her sister took.
~*~
Damn... I've lost her.
There was quite a lot of distance between the two of them, and when she finally got to the place where she last saw her sister, she couldn't find her anymore. The priestess decided to try and look anyway. Maybe she'll be lucky...
She looked on both ways she had to choose, and finally decided on the right.
~*~
Seems I was lucky... If you can call this 'luck'.
I can't believe my eyes.
When the road led her to the slaves' quarters, she wanted to turn back immediately, and pick the second way. But something made her stop, and continue inside.
Because she heard something, that sounded like her sister's voice.
And there she was, sitting with one of the slaves, and acting all like a lovestruck human girl. So pathetic! If she liked that slave so much....
But then she went a bit closer, and saw the slave. And at the same time, heard what they were talking about.
...it...was...not...a...drow...
...an elf from the...surface...?
"Tomorrow, Oir. There's going to be a big celebration tomorrow in the first house, and everyone will be there. Security in the other parts of the city won't be so tight, and we... We'll be able to finally be free together... We'll go to your home, and you'll be safe again, not a slave..."
"And will you go there with me, Ilivda?"
"Of course I will, Oir. For you... For you I'm ready to leave the House."
Elvdiira couldn't listen to that anymore. She took out her snake whip, took a swing, and hit her sister hard on the back. Ilivdiira screamed loudly, as the snakes dug their teeth in her delicate skin. The girl looked around, and suddenly paled, seeing what she saw.
"Elvda... Sister. What do you... DON'T!!!!" She screamed in panic, when she saw what her sister was doing. And Elvdiira took another swing, this time aiming at the slave. She hit him as hard as she could. Once... Twice... Thrice...
The elf screamed louder with each bite of the snakes. And Elvdiira was ready to kill him.
But then, her sister jumped on her, trying to stop her.
"Sister, please! I beg you, stop! Don't hurt him! I... I love him..."
Elvdiira's eyes widened in disbelief. "...love? You say you -love- that...that worthless scum?" She looked her sister deep into the eyes, and then punched her, as hard as she could. And when she fell on the ground, she grabbed her hair, and forcefully pulled her back up.
"So, a little betrayer we are, sister?" She spit in her face, and smiled cruelly. A part of her still couldn't believe this all was happening. Her sister, her beloved, but weak sister, who was always so obedient... Plotting to betray Lloth, betray her House, and all of the drow... And all of that for a bit of fun with this worthless slave. When she thought about all of that...her blood boiled.
"Mother would probably found this pretty...interesting..." Elvdiira smiled with a wicked smile. "That you were so much in hunger of a man's thighs, that you were plotting treachery with dirty animals..." She pulled her sister's hair sharply, making her look into her eyes as she was talking. She was frightened? Oh, she better be... "I'm sure mother will take pity on your hips... Maybe she'll give you to her pet draegloth, so he can ease your hunger..."
What a delightful feeling... She watched her sister's eyes widen in pure terror, as she mentioned their half-brother. Poor, little Ilivda was always so scared of him... A cruel smile bloomed on her face.
"You have two choices, sister. And no matter what you pick, your little plaything here dies anyway. First..." She once again pulled her sister's hair, wanting to get her full attention "...you decide that you really do 'love' mister prettyboy here. You'll keep begging me for his life, and I'll be forced to restrain you, and decide that this scum here is dangerous for the city, for corrupting its daughters. I'll have to torture him, slowly and painfully... I'll even let you watch!" She laughed out loud, as her sister burst into tears. "And then I'll tell mother how you were corrupted. And you'll have some time alone with the sweet little brother of ours, so you'll have no time to mourn. Or..." One more pull. Was Ilivda always such a crybaby? Elvdiira could hardly believe it. What in the world happened to her sister? "...or, there's the second option. You will tell me that this trash here was trying to deceive you, and trick you into helping the enemy. But of course you didn't let him trick you, did you? And for that, you'll have the right to end his life yourself..." She slowly reached her second hand to her sister's waist, and touched her gently, almost playfully.. And then, took out one of her sister's daggers. She placed it in her hands, and one by one, closed Ilivdiira's fingers on it. Then she let go of her hair. "...So, sister...what do you choose?"
And then she watched Ilivda trembling in panic, as she realized she actually had no choice at all.
~*~
"You picked the right thing, sister." She laid her arm over Ilivdiira's trembling shoulders, and watched her cry in panic and grief, while she was looking at the blood-stained dagger. Is this pathetic excuse for a drow really my sister? She was disgusted. With Ilivda's weak self, and with herself, for waisting so much time on loving this trash. But she finally exposed herself. And I'm not going to make the same mistake a second time!
"Of course you do realize this is not the end, sister?" she asked, and looked in satisfaction as the trembling drow girl started crying. "Even though you killed him, if mother ever knew about this... You owe me, sister. Big time. From now on, you will do everything I will tell you to do. And if I'll ever be unhappy with your services... You'll know what I'LL do."
This is going to be a great start.

For the mage:
Prompt: Your position in Drow society is, as expected, is not easy, being a male. You, however, have your eye on a position, one not normally accessible to males. What is that position and how do you get it?

Mission objective: Elvdra, the magenta-clothed mage xD

Entry:
I was working so hard for this, and what do I get?
Elvdra hissed angrily, and kicked the poor slave who just happened to be near.
It took me so many years to obtain this position! So much plotting, so many bribes, and...and what do I get? That b*****d is still alive!
~*~
He was only one of the minor mages in the House Alean'ana. His power was much more that anyone expected, but what good did it do to him? The seat of the House Mage was already taken.
By the Matron's son.
Oh, if the boy only had power, if he was as good of a mage as he supposed to be, everything would look different. He would gladly work under a proper House Mage.
But this one didn't even know what he was doing.
And any attempt to discuss with him ended with a punishment because of his annoying pride.
The first time this happened... Elvdra was still young then. A pretty boy, almost still a child, who loved his House and was full of good intentions. He pointed out a mistake the House Mage made in front of him, hoping for a praise from such a great figure...
...the night that followed...he will never forget.
I still have scars to help me remember.
That was when for the first time this thought appeared in his head.
'I would be a better House Mage than he is.'
It took years of careful planning, and many, many nights of punishment. Because after that first mistake, the mage was always keeping his eyes on him.
As if his screams gave him pleasure.
But he finally did it. He managed to make a deal with the House Mage of the first house.
That b*****d was sent away on a 'very important mission', and after many days, only one of the expedition's members came back alive. And he died soon after.
The seat of the House Mage was finally free, for him to take. And he was also free, free from all that terror. He was happy with his power. He was a great House Mage. And he brought House Alean'ana higher than anyone would expect.
And now the b*****d is back. And I have to run.
Because I was stupid. I was overconfident.
I left him a message.
The 'expedition members' were supposed to tell him who he owes his death to, just before they killed him. He wanted to have his revenge for all those nights.
But now he was back. And he knows.
Elvdra hurried to his room, and began to pack.
But it was already too late.
"Hello, plaything." The hand he hated so much grabbed his neck and pressed slowly, making it really hard to breathe. "Thank you for keeping my seat warm for me. I got your message. And yes, I also missed you."
Elvdra's eyes were wide, as he was desperately grasping for air. But he knew he won't be killed right now.
Because that would be too much mercy.

For the assasin:
Prompt: Open prompt

Mission objective: The obsessed assasin, Rhyllyn

Entry:
I've always admired Ashka. Many though him gross, because of his unnatural, white skin. I never did so. To me, he always seemed...fascinating.
The first thing I noticed about him, is that he managed to survive. His eyes were...damaged, in some way, though I never got to know how or why. And in a society where you must always carefully watch your steps... Being not able to see, and actually living through your childhood, is by itself quite an achievement.
When I started watching him, we both just moved from our childhood years. By then, I was already in training to help the house by getting rid of its enemies. And Ashka...
He was a slave.
I knew perfectly well what they were doing to him. First, he was young and pretty. Second, he couldn't see, so there wasn't really any other work that he could do... But at that time, I didn't care that much.
Yet.
~*~
I saw it happen, once.
I was already quite advanced in my training. But I needed to make sure. Make sure that I'm good enough.
So I decided to get into a high priestess' room, when she was alone.
Oh, it was risky, I know. If it was me of today, I would never do something so risky, without any real need.
But it was me of that day. Curious, young and foolish. And what saved me then was probably the fact that she wasn't alone.
I was picking at random, but it seems I somehow chose the priestess, who took liking in Ashka.
He was there, bound, sitting on the floor. And it was the first time I saw his naked body. It was getting slightly pinkish-red near the places where the rope was tight, and his back was full of scars... They all healed properly, but were still clearly visible. And there were so many of them... Yes, I knew what they were doing to him. But I had no idea he was so astonishingly beautiful.
The priestess took out her snake whip, and was circling around the boy, wondering where she should attack first. Ashka was shaking. Poor boy, so scared... But who wouldn't be, in his place?
It was that moment, that I realized just what a stupid thing I did. But somehow, I couldn't move. I stayed there, hidden, till he couldn't scream from pain anymore.
~*~
Since that day, I continued to spy on him.
That was pretty stupid of me, I have to admit. Like the first time didn't give me enough of a scare. But from the moment I saw him that day, I just couldn't keep my eyes off him.
I saw him many times, with that priestess of his, but I also saw him, when he was alone. And that's when I've started noticing things.
For someone who can't see, he was surprisingly agile.
He always knew when someone was being near, never, even once, tripped over anything, even if it was set in that place recently, and was really, really good in avoiding 'accidental' hits. I actually think he sensed me a few times, but never gave any clear sign that he knew that I'm there, so I guess I can't be sure... But the longer I watched him, the clearer was what I should do.
I should recommend him to my Master.
But I've still realized it too late. Because one day, when I went to watch him with the priestess... He wasn't there.
It gave me quite a shock. I ALWAYS knew where he was. And on that day, he would always be with her.
Some time passed, before I was able to leave the room. It was the worst moment in my life - fear of being spotted by an angry priestess, who was alone and had nothing to concentrate on, combined with the fear of not knowing what happened to Ashka, and where he was. But I endured it. She left the room, and I did soon after. And as soon as I did, I've started to search for my poor, lost Ashka. Did someone hurt him?
~*~
...I can't reach him anymore...
I can still watch him when he's alone, but my night sessions ended, without any possibility to continue them.
Because right now, he's spending his nights with the Matron.
It seems she realized his potential just as I did. But while I would make him a shadow walker at my side, she made him her trusted blade.
Well, 'trusted' might not be the best word. I doubt the Matron trusts anyone. But I've never seen someone move so fast through all the sword training classes, straight to becoming the House Weaponmaster.
There were quite a few, who thought her mind was clouded when she did that. Those who decided to think loudly are now dead by her hand. And those who kept their thoughts inside, had a chance to fight with him.
And all of them lost.
My sweet Ashka, I knew you had potential for greatness... But even I didn't suspect you would become so breathtaking with just a little of care and attention... If I only knew, I would take you for myself, show you the ways of shadow blade, and keep you with me forever... But it's too late now. You're out of my reach. I could've fight with that priestess who took you. Accidents happen, even to them. But the Matron... The soul of the House... My little Ashka, why are you so far..?
~*~
Years passed, and we both became adults. I still walk the shadow path, and you still serve the House... Yes, I'm still watching you, my precious Ashka... I think he noticed me at least twice during those years. When I saw your head turning in my direction, your presence trying its best to capture mine... The sweet sensation, my blood suddenly boiling... But I ran away. I can't touch you, since you belong to Her, even though your slightly tilted head was begging to be held by my hands... Why did you have to belong to Her? She's going to destroy him, to taint him, my pure, little Ashka... I know she's touching him at night. I know she's hurting him. I sometimes hear his screams, and my soul aches. Why can't it be me who's allowed to touch you?
He's still the Weaponsmaster, though. It took a few years full of challenges and assasination attempts, but you managed to live through it. You'll probably never know that I helped you a few times. Some of those assasins they sent after you were really good ones.
But I've disposed all of them for you. Your life should be mine now, why can't it be that way? I know you want to be mine. You never met me, but my face appears in your dreams, how can it be any other way? I have to rescue you from Her hands, my treasure... I will take good care of you, you'll see...
~*~
...How can it be? How did it happen?
I'm running away from the House.
I've stolen a beast of burden, a giant lizard some of the merchants use, and am trying to get as much distance between myself and the City as I can.
Behind me, on the saddle, lies my sweet, little Ashka, bound and unconcious. He still manages to look so beautiful that way... Ropes suit his body like nothing else...
He's mine, finally. I managed to obtain him, to win him from that woman! She will never lay her ugly fingers on my precious Ashka again.
Because I've cut them all off.
I finally did it. I killed Her.
This wasn't anything I've planned. I just couldn't restrain myself anymore.
I had to touch Ashka. At least a bit, so I'll know he loves me as much as I do.
I was careful at the beginning. A gentle brush on his hair, a quick touch to his waist, and I've disappeared... But soon, that wasn't enough, I needed more. I knew his body ached for mine the same way mine did for his. He was much more careful when walking through the corridors. Was he looking for me? And he seeked the company of others on his way more often. Yes, he was looking for me... But he was afraid of his own desires, afraid to come into my arms...
I'll show him there's nothing to be afraid of.
I've managed to catch him off guard finally. My arms closed around his waist, and my lips pressed on his. Finally, my beautiful Ashka, we can be together again... I've deepened my kiss...
And he...he hit me.
I was dumbfounded for a moment. And he took that occasion to scream. I've quickly covered his mouth with my hand. "Shh, my little Ashka..." I've said "It's me, there's no need to be scared... I'll be gentle with you..." I tried to be as reassuring as I could. He certainly must've been shocked, finally being able to be with me...
But then he hit me again. And took out his sword.
Did he not recognize my voice? How could it be? I've finally managed to get to him, and he is...
Oh, I know... How couldn't I realize sooner? He just wants to have a little fun first. Play some games before we'll finally unite... I can go with that.
I've waited for him to attack, and blocked him with my daggers. But somehow, he managed to scratch me. Oh, my dear Ashka, you're good... So much better than I've thought...
The 'fight' was longer than I thought. And to think, Ashka was actually winning... Did he want to be with me that much? Should I let you win, so you could finally hold me in your arms?
But then the door opened, and She entered. That somehow distracted Ashka, and the blow I planned on his shoulder actually hit him on his head. As he felt on the floor, unconscious, I quickly turned around and looked on the Matron. Her mouth was half open, either to curse me, or call her guards. No such thing, you harlot! I've quickly tossed my dagger...
...and it hit her right in the middle of her mouth.
I've walked towards her, as she felt on her knees, hands on her throat. That made me recall all her sins. I've took out another of my daggers, slightly bigger, with a saw-like blade. I took one of her hands, and started cutting off her fingers. And the only thing she could do was gurgle in pain, as she was dying. I've continued with the fingers, have to cut all ten of them. Serves her right for touching my pure Ashka with those dirty fingers of hers!
When I've finally finished, I took one of the ropes in the room, and started tying my Ashka. I knew what I have done. As soon as someone notices what happened, I'm going to get killed, and the same could happen to my poor Ashka, since he was spending his time with me as I was killing that dreaded woman... I've tied him tightly, a bit tighter than I should... But I couldn't help myself, his skin gets such a lovely shade when he's binded... Then I took him in my arms, and hasted towards the stables. We need to get out of here soon, and we can't waste our time, even for our happy reunion... I hope you understand, my sweet Ashka... As soon as we'll get to a safer place, I'll take down those ropes, and we'll have all the time we want for ourselves.
So right now we're riding the beast, and I'm hasting it as much as I can. I simply can't wait to finally take my dear Ashka in my arms, and hear how he can't live without me anymore...

On drow naming:
___Taken from here.
Drow, like their Elven cousins prefer names that flow off the tongue, however their names tend to have a harsher sound to them. One of the most common problems GMs and players alike have when playing non-human characters is naming them. Most non-human characters can't be named from a list of historic names, forcing DMs to make up totally new names. It is difficult to come up with names that are appropriate for non-human characters and consistent with one another. This is especially true for a GM who may find himself trying to come up with a large number of such names on short notice, yet without appropriate names, non-human characters often loose their unique flavor. Especially in the case of Drow, it is important that names represent and reflect the race's special attitudes and philosophies

The drow name generator below has been presented to assist with this daunting task. Although this could not possibly represent all the possible names for a race as old and diverse as the Drow, this list can serve as a starting point and quick reference to create a large and consistent list of names.

How it Works: Each Drow name consists of a prefix (from Table 2) and one or more suffixes (from Table 3),and then a house name consisting of a prefix (from table 4) and one or more suffixes (from table 5). Definitions have been included in these tables to help determine what a name means once it has been generated. In the case of suffixes, male and female endings have been included where appropriate. Alternate spellings have also been provided in some cases.

You may randomly generate an Drow name by rolling on Table 1. If you prefer, it is also possible to pick a set of definitions you like and assemble the name that matches them. If your character is a Wizard who is fond of spiders, you might decide her name should reflect this. Looking at the definitions, you decide her name will mean 'Spider-Mage.' This results in the name 'G'eldriina' or 'G'eldree'

If you don't like a particular combination, try some of the alternate suffixes listed, or add an 'a,' 'e,' 'i,' 'l,' 'r,' 's,' 'sh,' or an apostrophe. Although not every combination of prefixes and suffixes will sound right, usually only a minor change is called for. If you can't make a particular name work, try one with a similar meaning. If you didn't like 'G'eldriina,' try a name that means 'Spider-Sister' instead. If you have randomly generated a name and don't like it's definition, try altering the order of the words. It is also possible to use the definition as just a starting place for the name's meaning. Often the definitions can be combined in a poetic way for better results. In the case of a three or more syllable name, try dropping one or more of the definitions.

Table 1 (D10)
D10 Result
1-3 Roll once on Table 2 and once on Table 3
4-5 Roll once on Table 2 and twice on Table 3
6-7 Roll once on Table 2 and once on Table 3, add an apostrophe, then roll again on Table 3.
8-9 Roll once on Table 2 and once on Table 3 for a first name, then roll on Table 1 again for a second name.
10 Roll once on Table 3, add an apostrophe, then roll once on Table 2 and once on Table 3
