I was searching IMDb recently for fun, mostly cartoons I either liked as a kid, like now or both. I started out with Rainbow Brite, which lead me to Teen Titans and that made me think of the JLU. After all this seemingly pointless yet entertaining searching I noticed that names tend to repeat themselves frequently in VA casting. Particularly in the Batman series(pl).

This got me thinking: Is it good to constantly reuse VA's? Or, does it actually inhibit the growth of a character? Do the characters suffer from not having a fresh voice behind their individual personalities? Does it add a certain coolness to the comic-book-cartoon genre that you don't get with other animated/live-action T.V. shows? Does this mean that the VA's are actually fans of their characters? Is it just typecasting? Or, are they just lazy as actors? Maybe it just has to do with a comic company reusing a production company which likes to reuse certain voice actors.

Obviously the answers to some of these depend on individual people, but I'm still not sure what I think about the abundant reuse of VA's. So, I thought I'd bring my queries to Kapow!

Another Rainbow Brite fan.
Quote:

Having done some work in TV myself (only in the Public Access capacity though), I'd have to look at this from the Producer's standpoint. Many voice dubbing companies have their own 'stable' of actors that they use for all of their productions, because these are the people they are comfortable with. These are the people who they've worked with in the past, and who have worked with each other in the past. They catch on to the game, do their work, and there's no 'getting used to' or 'adjustment' time.

A VA's job is literally half a day's work, if done right. If the inflections can be nailed and the words come out smoothly, they can be in and out of the studio without bothering to change out of pajamas.

From the fandom point of view, I see your point. I'd like to scream every time I hear Rob Paulson's voice. Oh, you've heard his voice. Any time you hear a cartoon character and go "Dude, that guy sounds JUST LIKE Raphael from the old Ninja Turtle's show"-that's Rob Paulson. He was the second "Arthur" on 'The Tick.' He's every single sidekick character on every single Nicktoon except Spongebob. He's the obnoxious yellow version of Stitch in 'Lilo and Stitch the TV Series.' His voice makes me want to SCREAM.

BUT. He keeps getting the work because obviously, he is extremely good at what he does. Many many producers of animation ask for him by name because he's such a good hand in the business.

And the same is said for the people who do the voices for Bruce Timm's shows. Bruce knows Mark Hamil, Michael Rosenbaum, Phil LeMarr and the rest of the people who do multiple voicing. When you already know who you have and what they can bring to the table, why waste the time and money to find someone brand new?

I think that yes, in some cases it can hurt your suspension of disbelief like with that actor that was The Brain, Peter Venkman, and Garfield. But that one guy did the voices of Kimhari and Wakka in FFX and you'd never know it was the same guy so it really depends.

Lorenzo Music didn't do the voice of Brain. He was Garfield and Pete tho.

EDIT: He died in 2001, meaning he COULDN'T have been Brain's voice.

Having VAs do multiple characters is fine.. it's when the actors themselves don't have much of a vocal range that it "hurts".

For example, Maria Canals. She's pretty good as Hawkgirl on Justice League Unlimited... unfortunately, she's also used as Fire in the same episode. So on the one side we've got a voice we're used to, and on the other we've got the same voice except sporting a very bad Brazilian accent.

Does Rob Paulson have b***h tits? surprised

Anyway, in some cases (to me) the constant reuse of voice actors is remeniscent of Hollywood of the 1930's/40's when actors were usually exclusive to a particular studio and were "loaned out" to others. Sometimes it's nice, to hear a familiar voice, but sometimes you just get sick of encountering them again and again. I call this Jude Law Syndrome.

Among my favourite VA's are Cree Summer (whose sultry tones I first fell for when she was in Inspector Gadget and who I haven't heard in anything since Atlantis: The Lost Empire) Richard Steven Horvitz (who I tend to think of as Daggit rather than Zim, since I prefer Angry Beavers to Invader Zim), and Billy West (I was really stunned when I found out he was also Professor Farnsworth and Zapp Brannigan...really). There are tons of others, but they're the main three.

Maurice LaMarche, you uncultured buffoon! *dodges aerial pie*

I remember when I saw Ed Wood for the first time, I was unintentionally giggling my head off when he meets Orson Welles, because it was Maurice LaMarche doing the voice! It was Brain's voice coming out of some guy's mouth! whee

I was expecting (nay, hoping!) that he'd say "The same thing we do every night, Deppy...try to take over the world!

I want to hear Johnny Depp say "Narf!" now...>.>

Did I just hear Constantine say "b***h tits"? I'm calling HAX. I think that my favorite VA's would have to be the woman who did Tak in Invader Zim (I keep forgetting to find out her name), Jason Lee, and Brian Cox. I know it's bad form to be picking screen actors, but they're really my favorites. Cox was just the ultimate in creepy in Manhunt.

All I could think of was Meatloaf in Fight Club, but I'd be kind of surprised if you've seen that movie.

That's impossible you git, I've only mentioned her once before, in Pinder's thread about wrongful attractions and other such things.

Then set your phasers to shocked, because I have. Mr Loaf (Meat to his friends) was playing a character named Robert Paulson. Duuuuh.

You've mentioned not knowing who played Tak on at least one other occasion, but I can't be arsed trawling possible topics for proof. Trust me on this! domokun

Sadly I haven't watched it in months because I lent out my copy and never got it back. I just think of him as Bob, didn't make the connection. *Shrug*
