I'm not even sure if I'm gonna' get my doll if at all, but I'm fretting over it anyway. I want to fully know what I'm doing when that box shows up on my steps! I want NO HARM TO BEFALL my doll, especially not at my hands, so I want to know everything there is to know about basic care for the little beauty. Answers can be in text or paint picture tutorials or even real photo-tutorials (I would prefer not, but DoA LINKS could most likely be useful)! Anything, please. I'll take the best answers I get and quote them in this first post for reference for any other newbie needing the same help I need.

Q1: How do I assemble/disassemble the body? It's held together by strings/elastic, correct? How do I string my doll as well as disassemble it?

Q2: How do I insert eyes? What do I need? Can I use any substitutes?

Tahiel
To change the eyes you need: Eye putty (non-greasy tack, or the like, it usually comes with the doll to hold the default eyes) and new eyes. You remove the doll's wig, remove the headcap, and remove the eye putty. Then you replace the eyes, secure them with the putty, and put the headcap and wig on again. smile

Q3: What do I do if my doll has a manufacturing defect?

Tahiel
You mail the company with pictures of it, they will instruct you further. (If it's broken they may allow a replacement, for instance).

Q4: Will the official LUTS faceup rub off? What do I use to repair and preserve faceups? To remove a faceup?

Tahiel
Eventually, but trust me, you'd have to touch the face a lot for it to happen quickly. I've had my first doll for a year and it hasn't rubbed off any yet.
To repair: MSC (also to preserve), water pastels, water pencils, nothing oily.
To remove: Alcohol works well for me. Just keep oily stuff away from your doll.

Q5: Sanding - what is it? Why would I sand? What do I use to sand?

Q6a: How does the resin stain/become altered? Sun exposure can yellow it, I've heard, and there are protective coatings against that. What is that coating called? Where do you get it? Are LUTS dolls pre-coated?

Tahiel
It can stain if you use oily substances on it (like oil pastels).
The protective coating is called MSC UV Flat.

When buying MSC; make sure it's FLAT, otherwise you'll get a shiny doll. XD

You get it from hardware shops in some countries, abroad in doll or hobby craft sites.

Yes, all Luts dolls that come with a face up are pre-coated.

Q6b: Can the oils on people's hands also damage/stain resin? What other things can stain the resin? Is it true that wigs can stain the doll? Why?

Tahiel
Yes, dark wigs can stain resin. Why? Because of the tint they use I suppose. It goes away if you wipe it off with magic sponge.

Q7: How do you attach/put on a wig?

Q8: (Optional) What do I NOT do to/with my potential Dollfie?
Tahiel
Do not:
- Leave it standing unattended for long periods unless you know for sure it stands rock solid (it could fall, someone could bump on it, etc).
- scratch it's face
- get any oily substance near it
- use nailpolish remover

Thank you in advance for your help!~
And thank Tahiel for this really useful guide!!

Q1: How do I assemble/disassemble the body? It's held together by strings/elstic, correct? How do I string my doll as well as disassemble it?

Yes, it's held together by elastic. Most dolls come with metal hooks that hold extremities to the elastic (and thus keep the tension). You unhook from the elastic and thus are able to remove the parts. To reassemble, you slip the elastic through the holes of the different parts, and finally hook the metal hook once more to the elastic.
As clear as I can put it without pictures. sweatdrop

To sand you should use very fine grain sandpaper.
It is not needed, but here are different reasons people sand for:
- modifications to the mold head or body
- to remove seam lines (the lines where the mold joined)

You just slide it on! Optional, you may put some velcro, post tac, or something to keep the wig from sliding.

About the answer to Q1:
Are the hooks... accessible from the outside? Can you find a picture of the hooks if they are visible from the outside?

About the answer to Q2:
So it comes with just enough to stick the eyes in. Does it eventually dry up? owo

About the answer to Q7:
...Just slide it on? And, what, it just... stays? Like putting a wig on IRL?

About the answer to Q8:
Nailpolish remover? I thought that was what other people were suggesting?

Thank you, BTW, Tahiel.

I didn't post all your answers because I feel that a. Others need to contribute too and b. Your answer could've been more descriptive/detailed.

You're welcome.
I'm bad at describing. XD To be honest the best way is indeed to look for tutorials, where they will have pictures and the like to guide you even better than with a description.
Even better, I know there are restringing tutorials on youtube, which also help a lot. smile

If you take the handand the arm, and gently pull them apart, you will be able to see the hook attached to the elastic. smile Same for the feet. If you remove the headcap, you can see the head S hook and slide the head off (depending on the doll's mechanism, it will require a different style).

Set for restringing. You can see pics there. Also there are pics of the inside of the head so you can see how the eyes go. smile Plus it has more in depth explanations. sweatdrop

Unless it's too big or too small, yes, it just stays XD

There is one type that is safe to use, but the rest are not (I don't remember the name of it though, sorry ^^; ).
I steer clear from them fully since alcohol 96% works wonders for me for removing face ups. sweatdrop I know some people use thinner for that too, but I'm not too sure how that works either.
At any rate, you'd be better off asking someone who's had experience with either before using it, just to make sure.

@Q8:
Oh, damn! Youtube! We're getting snazzy now...
...
...
Ah-haha, just... slides right on, like you said. xD;

@Q1:
Ah... ahah.... That's... That's scary.

@Q2:
owo Sweet.

Yeah, it is a little scary at first, but trust me, it's not hard at all to assemble/disassemble a body. I should know, the second I got my El out of his box his foot and leg came apart because the elastic had slid off the hook. xd
Restringing crash course! Now I've restrung him at least ten times, because the hardest part isn't to do that, but to find the elastic tension you're happy with until you get the hang of it. xd

...But how do you adjust the tension, then? :0
PostPosted: Thu Oct 02, 2008 11:27 am

By tying a knot in the elastic wink

Any specific placement of the knots?

Is there a method to the madness?
PostPosted: Thu Oct 02, 2008 7:26 pm

Usually you hide the knots inside the body, but regarding placement- it all goes on how tight or loose you like the elastic tension of your doll, then you'd place the knot closer to the ends of the elastic (for loose) or further away (for tense).

There are advised lengths for it, though, the luts board has an example here: http://eluts.com/frontstore/webboard/content.asp?bId=2397&mart_id=lutsdoll&code=lutsdoll_2&Page=9&bGroup=1141&bStep=1&bLocation=1&bNumber=26&sField=&sString=

OOH OOH ONE MORE.

What about sewing dolls' clothes? Is there any FORM-FITTING PATTERNS out there? I mean the ones recommended on... Uh... that pink site... I never remember it... lead to these really loose shirts. And I want some clothes before the doll comes, you know? My mother is so dreadfully worried about the doll being naked when I first get it (lol) so I'd like some clothing for it.

And I don't want my dolly to be wearing ugly granny panties or like, a balloon shirt.
PostPosted: Sat Oct 04, 2008 2:01 pm

XDD
I'm afraid I can't help with that, my sewing sucks, and when I do sew I just make my own pattern-like things (because they're not really patterns lol) by measuring the doll at the time. sweatdrop

If you read the doll sizes you could maybe make some decently sized clothes? sweatdrop

I want my doll to wear skin-tight clothing, so I kinda want the doll so I can fit it as I go. I've never sewn complete outfits by myself... I'm getting the kitters jsut thinking about SEWING my beautiful doll's wardrobe.

I went to the fabric store today and was looking at everything and saying, "This would look great as a ___ for my doll!!"

Then my mother yelled at me, "WE'RE NOT SHOPPING FOR THE DOLL."
