Courtesy of Dr. Steel's myspace blogWell now, this is interesting. It would seem that MTV has decided to do a small segment on the steampunk subculture. And I would say that they didn't do too bad of a job. I quite enjoyed the video segments, especially the feature of The Dr. Steel Show. Since MTV is such an influencial progam among the impressionable little tweens and people without a decent source of education, this could quite easily cause steampunk to go mainstream. This could be a good thing....or it could be a very horrid curse. May I have your thoughts on this?

I say why not? All publicity is good, even bad publicity.

Even if it did get picked up by the mainstreame it would never be authentic Steampunk. Those tweens that would pick up on it, most of them would do it just for the clothes and not bother to reseach what it actually is.

I'm in two minds. Firstly, I absolutely love the notion of there being more steampunk in this world, and more people who like it (why not?). However, I do fear some people will do it 'for the sake of it', as it were - which is perhaps not so desirable. Not such people themselves, but more the idea of seeing steampunk as the next band-wagon to jump on to.
In a nut-shell, be on the look-out for cheap imitations. Also, get ready to use the phrase 'I liked steampunk before it was cool'.
~
I hope the introduction of steampunk on MTV is a good thing (and encourage it for that). But whatever happens, I don't much mind really - I'd still like Steampunk, and go on my way heedless.

Meh. Steampunk's a thing of the past anyway. I mean, its so late-1800s.
Seriously though, this could be a problem. So long as we weed out new entries to this guild, particularly those that began "I sore ur secshun on MTV and i thort it was brill and so i wanna like join teh steamunk gild for the lulz", we should be okay, at least here.

MTV is pretty lame, but it's no reason to discriminate over. Steampunk is supposed to be pretty all-inclusive as far as I've seen. And the MTV audience isn't just tweens either. (Not that age in this sort of inclusion should matter too much either)
Sometimes it's just plain people who called in work sick and don't feel like watching Judge Judy or something like that. All in all I'm actually a bit shocked by the elitist attitude towards a small clip over a presentation.
On another note steampunk will never really be completely cool, kind of like anime. It's one of those things that are to be quite frank "nerdy." Not very many people are going to readily admit that they spent hours re-painting a nerf gun in copper paint to make it look older. Nor will they admit to stealing Grandpa's welding goggles either.
As for the age group they'll all grow up eventually, and some of them would stick around. Instead of putting down a whole age group we should try to mentor them and set an example.

I don't want to be an elitist but I'm not sure I like the thought of all the wannabe steampunks showing up on TV and at cons. The numbers are pretty cool the way they are now.
But then again, going mainstream could make it easier to find cheap mass produced goggles and imitation period clothing. rolleyes

Kill The Bat [...]Nor will they admit to stealing Grandpa's welding goggles either. [...] How did you know I have my g-pa's welding goggles?
My friend sent me the article today, actually, and I must admit it was a fairly good read. The writer was well researched and had links to several things Steampunk that I did not know of. There were no vast exaggerations or over simplifications of Steampunk, and I learned about a few good bands from it.
I have not seen a link to the actual article here yet, so if anyone wants to read it for him or herself, here it is: http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1595812/20080926/abney_park.jhtml

I don't want to sound like an elitist, I mean if some of my friends cottened on to the Steampunk genre I would be more then happy to show them all this great stuff. It just bugs and upsets me a little when people dont want to be educated in what history is behind something like this and I have a sinking feeling that if this hits mainstream, it'll happen. It'd be great if it got a few more people interested in Steampunk, I'd love to hang out with a few more people of similar minds. I just hope the publicity works for the better =]

I never really thought of Doctor Steel as Steampunk, but I will allow this.
I heard about this from Voltaire. Regardless of the impact on the culture, the video segment was well done, using Voltaire (who I also never really considered Steampunk), Abney Park, Coilhouse (awesome site, byt the way. Do check it out) and Dr. Steel is a quick way to my heart.
Anyway, Its always a little bit disappointing when a subculture begins to get mainstream exposure, but oh well. Besides, maybe some kid flipping through MTV one night will find that and fall in love with it?

As you mentioned with stuff like Dr. Steel and Voltaire, the rub lies with the fact that the public view of steampunk (as it were) is somewhat different from the view of those 'in the know' - and subsequently a number of things that 'should' sit outside (but near) steampunk get pulled under the steampunk umbrella. Welcome back?

I'm rather pleased, and depressed. Firstly, it was a good cover. Did a pretty good job, in my opinion. And I'd love to live in a steampunk world, It would definitely be quite an improvement, and beautiful to look upon.
And the negative, is that I'm waiting for the kids to wear jeans and t-shirts, and a pair of goggles, and proclaim themselves 'steampunk'. I'm waiting for the fails. And the lulz.
