**Personal Time Line Reference**
After Ginkgo, before Seresai's return

He had wandered farther then usual today, tracking far beyond the borders he had mapped as a colt, further to the west where the earth met the sky and in years previous, his father had once met the mare Sukari.

Yet Tiarnan knew nothing of ancient history, he merely followed the gentle current of a mountain stream until it took him to a brightly lit autumnal lake, surrounded on one side by hardy trees that grew near the edge despite the harsh conditions of the wide prairie land. Today he had left before the dawn, wondering at his fortune in finally connecting with his mother, but fearing the repercussions from his father. Crousader was nothing if not a traditionalist, and having grown up by way of the sword and hoof... Tiarnarn was acutely aware of the differences between himself and the pure white stallion of air.

Yes, here he finally decided to rest his weary limbs, and with a grateful sigh he lowered himself to the ground amid the slender golden grasses and watched lazily as a flock of waterbirds fished earnestly at the shore.

Dull golden hues were focused flatly on the ground below her feet, ebony forelocks hiding them from the sunlight as the winged mare trudged her way through the grassy field. It may have interested her to know that her grandmother had a history with one of her few companions in this area... but as it was, the scenery was just scenery to Feilea.

She didn't understand her father. He fought and fought to gain his mother's approval when he already had it... at least from what she saw. Kureno might not have been accepted by Sukari completely, but she loved him none the less... and Fei had always desired that kind of love and acceptance from her own father. She wasn't courageous though, like him... she couldn't outmatch anyone in strength or cunning... perhaps speed, but it was little good that did her.

She had hated her grandmother at first. She held her father's attention and devotion like no other was able, and didn't seem to appreciate it in the least... until Sukari had approached her, herself. She had asked why Fei was always hiding in her father's shadow, looking up through her bangs at others, and remaining as quiet as possible. The young mare had only been able to respond with 'I want to make father happy', although it was more of a matter of, 'I don't want to make him angry or disappointed.' That seemed to be all she was capable of... but she was floored when Sukari offered the simple words of, 'Then try.'

Feilea was outraged at first at the implication that she hadn't been trying... but after a few moments of sputtering in effort to bring up a scenario where she had truly put forth her best effort to make her father proud... she couldn't come up with any. All she had ever done was follow around in his shadow, head down and eyes on the dirt, silently accepting of the lack of affection and tenderness her only family had ever offered her. Was she so weak?

A frustrated sigh befell the mare's dark lips as she came to an abrupt halt atop a tall hill, golden eyes gazing out across the small prairie through tentrils of onyx silk.

The birds started suddenly, and lazy as he was today, Tiarnan deigned only to glance over his shoulder, gazing in the same direction of the birds towards the crest of the hill behind him. There was likely nothing there, Tiarnan knew better then most the ways of the wildfolk, they were prey animals and flighty by nature... even the bend of a grass stalk by a wayward breeze would set them off.

This time, however, he could vaguely make out a shape among the grass. A stranger to him, which was.. frankly... not very surprising given the company he preferred to keep. He recalled lighter days in his youth, when he would gladly run up to a stranger and greet them with a smile...

But those days had long been beaten out of him, replaced by a chill appraisal of his surroundings and an aloof demeanor that was anything but inviting to those of his own kind. The wild things of nature still adored him though, so he had retreated further into the life of the small woodland creatures. Theirs was a simple existence... where war and battles were an abstract concept they had no reason to contemplate.. let alone grasp. Even now a small field rat had nuzzled up against his side where he lay, drawn by the young alicorn's aura... oblivious to the look in his eyes that he now cast up the hill.

Honor demands courtesy to even those you hate... strive to always appear calm and in control of your thoughts and your emotions.. so that they may not, in turn, be used against you.

Life lesson number eleven...

Golden eyes lifted from behind the veil of her ebon' forelocks as the weight of a stare penetrated the winged mare's thoughts, shifting warily as she spotted the form of the ivory stallion in the distance.

Feilea was a solitary being, much as her father had always been- but for different reasons. While he reserved his only attention and devotion for his mother and scorned others who tried to gain his favor, Fei kept away out of fear, more than anything else... fear of what, she could not say, but the simple desire for companionship was not strong enough to change her anti-social ways, though it was always present in her thoughts.

There was a strange familiarity about the armored alicorn stallion... though she was sure she had never seen him before, there was a similar presence at the back of her mind that tugged at her. She had always harbored a keen intuition, a gift passed on from her mother- although Feilea was unaware of this- but it had never struck her quite in the way that the sight of this other soquili had.

Dismissing the notion that perhaps she might find out by asking, she simply took a reluctant step forward, gaze settling upon the clear crystalline waters behind the unmoving form. Though her vision was focused elsewhere, her ears remained pricked towards his frame warily- one could never be too careful, after all.

Coming to a halt beside the sparkling waters, she afforded him another brief glance with an acknowledging nod, then lowered her head to drink from the running stream.

Since silence suited the young stallion just fine, Tiarnan took a moment to absorb the implications of actually meeting an individual that was not immediately obsessed with greetings or sparring.. and found that he liked the idea.

When nothing was said, he had to option to continue with what he had been doing... or tender his own greetings.. fashioned in a way he found appetizing, rather then politely waiting for another to strike up a conversation and force him into the role of the sounding board. His father had taught him to never speak unless spoken too, and though Tia was quite certain Crousader had only truly meant for that rule to hold fast until adulthood, old habits die hard and Tiarnan found it difficult to even fashion his own thoughts when another initiated contact.

Given that, he opted to continue on in silence, and merely returned the mare's nod and turned his gaze back to the lakeside, where her presence had started the waterbirds into flight . They fluttered about like so may white clouds on the wind before finally settling not to far from where Tia and the mare currently resided. They were an amusing bunch, brightly clad figures in white with a touch of gold and black around their beaks.

Swans, his mother had called them... such graceful creatures...

At the reciprocated gesture of greeting and no further movements from the stallion, Feilea's rigid posture relaxed slightly, tensed muscles releasing their strain as she drank from the cool waters. Her ears remained trained upon his immobile form, but her doubts were alleviated by the lack of action on his part.

It seemed that he appreciated silence as much as she did.

The fluttering of birds upon the water startled her slightly, lifting her head in time to see the majectic animals ascend from the surface, watching intently as they flew. A tiny, almost unnoticeable smile grew upon her dark muzzle as amber hues remained trained upon the white winged swans, observing their graceful movements as they landed a scant distance away and settled once more.

There were times that Fei wished that she was as free as the birds that roamed the skies above- never to carry doubts or worries about the world below, obligated only to keep their wings moving to keep them aloft on the winds. A small, wistful sigh befell her parted lips as an expression of longing briefly flitted across her features- but a second passed, and it was gone again, and her eyes hid themselves once more behind tendrils of onyx silk.

A curious glance was afforded back towards the ivorn stallion, although she still said nothing... but her gaze was not as wary as it had been moments ago.

Tiarnan noted the strange mare's slight relaxation, and sighed in relief, allowing some of the tension he had been previously unaware of melt from his body. If she hadn't said anything yet, he found that it was unlikely for her to start now, so he let his mind drift a bit as he watched the birds, specifically a big male, who was preening and cavorting about like a spring colt. The mental image of a swam colored colt amused him, and he lost himself in thought...

Eventually, the little rodent at his side stirred with his deep inhalation of breath, and Tia's concentration was broken when he glanced down to smile faintly at the small creature. Odd, he really did like the little thing... though some of his herdmates and the human Riverfire found them irritating. For the life of him he couldn't fathom why such a small creature could illicit such dislike from the normally gentle and understanding Riverfire, but his mother assured him that the young two-legger maiden must have her reasons.

Glancing over towards the mare, he caught her sparing him a glance, her own attention obviously also having been on the birds.

At length, he finally broke the silence between them.

"Lovely aren't they?"

The silence was peaceful, almost relaxing, unlike the frequent tense and awkward silences that stretched on between most of the herd members that insisted upon approaching her. Conversation was not one of her strong points- it had never been, and likely would never be. Her father had seen to that... although she supposed that very little of it was done consciously.

As the low masculine voice finally rumbled through the air and broke her contemplations, golden hues lifted, still veiled behind her forelocks, to meet his own gaze. She noted, for the first time, that he had a rather tranquil stare... and it was something that she could appreciate. Kureno's and Sukari's were always guarded, sometimes cold. She noted to herself in curiosity to find out if her own eyes conveyed such a message.

His question made her glance back towards the magnificent birds, a fleeting ghost of a smile once again dancing across her features before it was gone. She made to nod in agreement to the question, but considered it carefully for a moment more. Fair was fair, after all, he had broken the silence, so she should offer her own voice in return.

"Yes, they are lovely," she acquiesced, head lowered as her gaze flitted back and forth a bit between the stallion and the aforementioned birds. He was a curious one... she wondered absently if his affinity for silence stretched as far as her own. Perhaps he was more like her aunt Avalee, with her love for cloud-watching and star-gazing.

Whatever the case... Fei saw no reason to discontinue the meeting, and even a bit of desire to know just how similar this stallion was.
