Having escaped from her mother once more - really, Houdini could have done no better in mastering such sneaky tactics - Lacy was roaming freely about the riverbank that cut a long path through the woods around her house. She had no set plan of activities for the day, really. Getting out and away to be on her own was pleasant enough. Abandoning her shoes to wade through the silty water where the river had slowed to a molasses-swift pace, she splashed about and made a general ruckus.

Charles had no affinity to wandering through thickets, it was much more of an aversion, really, but he couldn't tell a kid otherwise when they were already halfway out the door screaming, "Cha'lie, c'mon, le's go," which found him wandering aimlessly after.
The child, on another hand, was quite happy to take a stroll and get away from the dull abode of Charlie's and things were made even better when she heard splashing; splashing meant water, and someone or something had to be doing the splashing, so there was a person, too. Soon enough, she came across the river and the person, so, naturally, her first reaction was, "Whatchu doin' out here?"

Lacy paused, knee-deep in water, to really think on the question.
"Splashin'," she said eventually. "Iss muddy."
She bent down and grabbed a handful of mud, exhibiting it for the new creature to see. It dribbled slowly down her arm, thick and dark.

Deniz promptly decided to wade her way over to this other person and their glob of mud; it didn't look entirely too interesting when it was like that, she thought, but she wouldn't say anything in case this person liked mud.
"'m Denny," she continued, holding out her hand for what Charlie said was a shake, and he also said that it was polite to do when meeting new people. She didn't get it, but did it anyway.

Puzzled at the outstretched hand, Lacy looked around for something to put in it. Mud? No, too obvious. Digging into her jumper's pocket with her clean hand, Lacy pressed a lone animal cracker into Denny's palm.
"Lacy."

And so she blinked, confused, but ate the animal cracker regardless, cutting it down in the prime of life and opting to offer her explanation when she was through with it.
"S'posed t' shake it," she said simply and grabbed the girl's hand that wasn't occupied with mud, putting it in her own, demonstrating this 'handshake' thing. "See? Shake."

Shake? Hrm.
"Thass silly," Lacy said decisively. "Yer funny, Denny."
Pulling loose and kicking about in the water once more, Lacy went waist-deep and slid on a loose rock, careening headfirst with a splash. She surfaced a moment later, looking completely unruffled.
"Whatchoo doin' in my ribber, Denny?" she asked. "No'ne lives here but me'n my mama."

Denny decided to ignore Lacy's little flop (and being called funny, as people are only funny when they tell jokes, you see, and a comedian she was not) since it looked like she had recovered just fine.
"Cha'lie and me were s'posed to be walkin, but he's slow," since the former couldn't be bothered to take her to the pool or the beach or something nice; it was a compromise, she thought, despite not even having voiced her wishes. "I heard splashin' and then you," a point, "were there."

Lacy nodded with interest, washing the remnants of mud off her hands and diving under the water again. She surfaced a moment later with an angrily wriggling fish in her hands.
"Here," she said, presenting the unfortunate thing to Denny. "Now we f'ends."

Taking the offering, it occurred to Denny that Lacy had already given her two presents, two whole presents, so, naturally, she felt bad for not having returned the favor - placing the little fish in her pocket, hoping it wouldn't find a way out, she knelt down in the water and searched around a bit.
She stood straight up again after a minute, holding out a small rock to the other girl, hopefully not the one she tripped on, grinning. After all, her first friend deserved only the best of the best, you see.

Brightening at the gift, Lacy put the rock into her pocket and stuffed it down underneath mushy animal crackers and crumpled paper to make sure it would be safe.
"It'll be m'favorite rock," she said solemnly. "I'll name it Lola an' I'll feed it rockstuff an' it'll get big an' when it'sa moun'nain we can go 'splore it."

"'splorin is fun," she agreed, still grinning wide.
"Where's your mama?" Denny questioned after a few seconds, remembering that the other had said this was her and her mama's river, but all she'd seen was fish and rocks and lots of water. "She nice? She won' chase me away, right," because that happened one time and it was not fun.

"She's over there," Lacy said, pointing vaguely in Some Direction. "She's doing gardnin' stuff."
She considered Denny's question carefully.
"She's a plant," Lacy said finally. "Plants are icky and taste gross. But she's nice and she makes me hamm'urgers."

Denny took a look in said direction, though could not pinpoint anybody or anything. Even so, by this account, Lacy's mother sounded quite alright, especially if she made hamburgers.
"D'you have t' water your mama? Since she's a plant 'n' all," she pondered. Speaking of water, she took a moment to check on her new pet and, seeing as it breathing really hard, decided it should go back to the river for a while.
"Y'better come back, fishy," she warned.
