My Fishies

1 African Cichlid Tank (Lake Malawi), 1 Oscar & Jack Tank

The Africans

Just a few pics of my cichlids. Most of them are from the day after I bought them. They might look a bit small in the pictures and skinny, but I bought them from Petco and they underfed them something awful. I do not recommend buying fish from Petco/PetSmart unless your local one is particularly good. My betta from there had intestinal flagelletes, my cichlids had a case of Ich and also Malawi Bloat just days after I bought them. I bought the proper medications and now they're all doing great. They're living happily in a 30g tank and have grown a bit. I'll be sure to get some new pic of them soon.

----------------

Sparky & Jet
(1 day after I bought them)

Note: They have a different background now. I hadn't bought a background for them at that point and so I used an old Matrix Online poster to give them something to look at. lol

Garret
(2 days after)

Note: Garret, before she became ill. Her full name was actually "Garret James" as she was named after a guy that works where my bf works. Garret (the human) loves talking about himself in the third person (hence the title) and screaming 'hey man' from pickers at passing folk. I usually wait a few days before naming any of my pets, so I can see what kind of personality they have so I can pick a fitting name. Garret James just seemed to fit this little fishie for some reason. :3

I bought her from Petco and the local Petco... well it's not the greatest place to buy fish. The tank she came from didn't have any dead fish or signs of illness when I bought her, but my only guess on how she contracted Ich is from Petco. Once I noticed the Ich on her, I quickly moved her into isolation and gave her the treatment. I also treated the main tank (and they are alright). Sadly, Garret died on the 18th.

Demios
(1 day after)

Note: Demios was simply too weak when I bought him and soon died. He was named after a character from one of my stories.

Not Pictured: Sparky Jr.

Note: Sparky Jr. passed away the day Garret died. Garret, Demios, and Sparky Jr. were originally tankmates at the store I purchased them from. When Demios died, I noticed Sparky Jr. seemed a bit lethargic and almost sad in a way. Sparky and Garret seemed to get a little protective over him as well. After Garret was placed in quarantine, I noticed Sparky Jr. seemed to get even more lethargeic/sad and when Garret finally passed I think that Sparky Jr. just couldn't take the stress of losing both tankmates. He passed four hours after Garret.

The Oscars

My newest fish! Just an albino tiger (Spitfire) and a tiger (Okenuth). They're such sweeties and are even starting to learn some tricks. Okenuth recognizes three hand signals already, Open (Opens his mouth at the surface of the water), Jump (...that's obvious!), and Dance (He makes a few circles near the surface). Spitfire only knows Jump so far. Hehe. Please ignore the reflections, they're from random things taped onto the wall next to them. lol.

The Betta

Just a cute little female betta. My friend Matt wanted to get one, but he didn't have room and wasn't sure if he was allowed to keep a betta. So, we decided to 'co-own' the betta and she would live with me. Miera Sako is currently housed in her own 3g tank, a stark contrast compared to the tiny little cup she used to live in at the petstore.

Edit: Matt was finally able to take the betta to her new home. She's living happily at his house now. ^^

The Jack Dempsey

She's my newest and final addition to the Oscar/Jack tank. She's not aggressive at all which is very surprising. She hasn't been named yet, but I'll update on here when she gets her long awaited name.

nice fish. one of my bettas had ick once, but it was my fault for not cleaning out his bowl often enough. i spent $15 on the medicine for a $2 fish, but it was worht it. lucky he made it. sorry about garret, she was very pretty.
how did you train a fish to dance?! eek your amazing
it always makes me so happy to see someone else that likes female bettas. i prefer my girls over my boys half the time, the girls are easier to train, not to mention are much better at catching live food.

I got him to follow some krill around in a circle and started making the hand motion (circles with my wrist) before and after rewarding him. He knows now if he does a dance, he'll get food. ^^ He's such a cutie. I'm getting him to do the 'Wiggle Dance' too... basically he just wiggles around. XDDDD

I love female bettas. They're so cute and very smart. Matt got another betta, she's blue with horizontal white stripes... I've NEVER seen that coloration on a betta be it male or female! We kinda rescue fish from Petco (my local Petco is horrible) lol.

I like your fish. I have a few fish. They are goldfish, a placo, and one that I don't know what kind it is. I don't have any pictures of them yet, when I get pictures of them, I'll post pictures of them. ^_^

The main rule calls for a 55g-75g for 1 oscar. 100+ for multiple oscars. Two oscars can co-exist within a 55g and be pretty good in a 75g. A lot of it is care and they need frequent water changes, especially if you put two in a 55g. The biggest reason for large tanks is how messy they are, then of course the next reason being their size. You have to have some good filtration and definitely have a water testing kit (the best I've found is the API Master Test kit, goes for about $34 at my LFS). I do weekly 50% water changes, I used to do twice a week 25%. It works well and my oscars LOVE water changes for whatever reason. lol. Spitfire thinks the gravel vac is a toy... Oi vey... He actually swam inside of it and I had to pop the vac off the hose and poke him out. He was very proud of himself. ._.'

Though, my boyfriend kept two oscars and two jacks in a 55g and they lived upwards of 14 years. He took exceptional care and was lucky he had some friendly jacks. Smaller tank size = more risk of aggression generally.

But yeah... sorry for rambling. XD Generally the bigger the better. ^^

ah, alright, thanks. ive only really gotten really into fish care with my bettas. when i was younger we had all sorts of fish but back then we thought if you have nice water and food a fish will live to the ripe old age of 1-3 years. i feel sorry for all the fish we probably killed.
i would like to look into bigger ffish since the largest thing i have are my bettas.
god, large tanks with large fish seem like so much more work than all my herps combined XD

I find that the oscars are more work then my africans, the jack, my guppy, my cat, my hampster, and my snake combined. Though I have a schedule for my animals and it makes it very easy. Friday is dedicated to cleaning tanks, etc. XD

Luckily my cat's afriad of all the other animals in the house... dunno why. Especially my guppy of all things. He wandered into my room and looked up at it then when he noticed it, puffed out and bolted (he actually ran into the wall, but he's been getting a little 'off' in his older years. XD)
