Whisper galloped through the lapping waves, laughing at the splashes she made. Peaches bobbed along behind her, giggling at the silly winiko. Whisper spotted a crab trying to skitter out of her way. She stopped and watched it, remembering the summer party where she'd met other winis and inherited her familiar, Peaches.

The beach was, as always, bright and quite warm. Splayed out lazily in the white sands, Valerian absently batted a paw at whatever happened to cross his path, once or twice having to jump up and move from an angry crab. His eyes were half-closed in sleep, and he was planning on drifting off into a nap when-
Laughter?
He immediately perked up and looked down the shore, spotting the approaching winiko without a problem. She looked so content... his thoughts trailed off as his familiar bumped him gently in the shoulder, finally settling on his back haunches. Oh, what a day.

Whisper playfully batted at the crab still trying to skitter out of her reach. She remembered the crab she had batted back at the wini at the summer party. She had to thought to have a game of toss, but the crab latched onto the wini's tail, sending the poor wini wailing down the beach. Whisper sighed. She'd failed at making a new friend that day. Well pooh, she thought petulantly. She whipped around and smacked the crab with her tail, sending it sailing down the beach.

Spotting the poor little crab sailing his way, Valerian stuck out his paw and caught the thing on it, letting it scuttle away without protest. Standing from the sand and shaking his body, he ruffled his mane and watched the other for a moment, bits of dirt still sliding out and off of his fur.
"Pick on something your own size," he called jokingly, a soft snort of laughter in his throat, "I don't even think I saw that one click a claw at you, you know."

Whisper watched the crab sail through the air, then spotted a green winiko laying on the beach. "Oh no, not again, " she gasped to herself. Peaches giggled. Whisper took off running after the crab, sliding to stop in front of the other wini just as it caught the crab in it's claw.
"I'm so sorry," she said in a rush. "I didn't mean to fling that at you." Whisper watched the crab make a hasty retreat. "Um, true, he wasn't much of a challenge," she replied to his comment. "It just reminded me of a sad moment."
The wini didn't seem to be mad, nor was he running away. Maybe she'd finally found a new friend. "I'm Whisper and the giggly one is Peaches." The orange orb bobbed over Whisper's head giggling.

Seeing the crab move off to a safer location, Valerian turned his attention back to the demon. "Well, it's okay, though, that's all that matters." He offered a lopsided smile to her. "Whisper? I'm Valerian."
He paused thoughtfully for a moment, remembering his own familiar perched on his haunches. "He doesn't have a name," he added, tipping his head back to gesture to it, "Didn't want one when I got him. Or, 'm assuming it's a him, I'm actually not quite sure."
He stood there for a moment before a laugh hit his throat, tail moving back and forth amusedly. "What brings you all the way out here?"

"My bonded usually keeps me in the house. I was just so bored today. So I snuck out to go find something to do."
Whisper eyed the familiar sitting on Val's rump. It certainly didn't look as friendly as her own.
Realizing she was still dripping from running through the waves, she added, "I like to play in the water." Whisper smiled, almost apologetically. " I guess that's kinda silly."

"Really?" Valerian laughed. "Mine usually can't wait to get me out of the house. Well, I should say us, really, since there's more than one of me. We live on the beach 'bout a mile from here, so it didn't take much effort to get here." He smiled at her as he noted her eyes look towards his familiar.
"He's harmless, don't mind him. Just a tad quiet is all."
As if to prove his point the cow-like thing moved from his rump to towards his neck, burying his face into the orange mess that was the winiko's mane.
He had been about to ask about the water when she answered the question for him. "Oh? No, it's not silly," he said, chuckling softly, "There's plenty of demons that enjoy that. I don't mind lakes and ponds, but I generally stay out of the ocean." He laughed, tail curling and uncurling in the sand behind him.

"My bonded likes to keep an eye on me. She figures if she knows where I am and what I'm doing, then she can keep me from causing any trouble. Mostly I just follow her around to see what's she's doing and get underfoot. "
Peaches' curiosity got the better of her and she hovered closer to the familiar burying itself in Valerian's mane.
"Why do you stay out of the ocean?" asked Whisper, turning to look at the incoming waves. "Is there something out there?'

She sounds like Belle. He mused inwardly, a smile creeping across his face. "Then I take it you two get along, yea? It's wonderful when winiko and humans can interact in a friendly manner, you know. I've heard one too many stories about demons that were disowned by their bonded, but couldn't leave their side; it's sad really."
He trailed off for a moment, seemingly unaware of Peaches hovering near him. The familiar in his mane made a soft squeaking noise however, burying in a bit further.
"No, nothing that would harm us," he replied, chuckling softly has his eyes also looked to the waves, "But back home there's these two little terrors that I live with; the son and daughter of an aquatic winiko, actually. I used to go in all the time, but now that they're there all the time tugging on my legs and tail I tend to stay out of the water."

Whisper cocked her head thoughtfully. "Yea, I guess we've developed a companionship. If it weren't for having each other, we'd both be alone."
The squeak in Valerian's mane brought her attention back to her familar hovering over him. "Peaches, don't be so nosey. Come back here." The giggly orb floated back to her.
"I don't think I've ever met any water winis." Whisper giggled at the mental image of little winikos attached to Valerian's legs. "Maybe they just want to play."

Valerian nodded his head, mane falling into his eyes as he did so. "It works that way with my bonded, too. Except well, she has more than just me. We keep her company and act as her family. She doesn't have anybody else to turn to." His familiar settled with its eyes peeking from his fiery orange mane, barely visible through the thick tendrils.
"Well, they're cute, I guess, but they can be a bit terrifying. The little girl has very large spines all over her body, and I'm not too keen on getting pricked by one of them." He flashed a grin before chuckling softly. "I don't mind playing, actually, I just don't like getting ganged up on. I got along well with the other demons when they were little, but these two can be right little terrors when they want to be."
His claws shifting a bit in the sand as a paw lifted, tracing runic symbols and random swirls in the surface.

"I think my bonded is just too busy. She seems to spend most of her time making things." Whisper fluffed her wings and shook her body to loosen the drying sea salt. "But it's fun to play in the fabrics she usually has piled around the house. She only gets really upset when she can't find them after I've scattered them."
Whisper noticed Valerian drawing his claw through the sand. She tried twisting her head to see the lines from Valerian's point of view. Not being able to make heads or tails of what he'd drawn in the sand, she sidled up next to him to see what he was drawing. "That looks interesting. What is it?"
Peaches squeaked in happiness at being closer to the mysterious familiar. Hovering over Whisper's wings, Peaches winked at the green eyes mostly hidden in the abundant orange mane.

"Making things, hmm?"
Valerian paused whatever he was drawing for a moment, realizing that she was indeed speaking about his scribbles. A sheepish laugh came from his throat. "They can be whatever you'd like, really. It's art, that's what it's for. They can be a demon," he started, adding a couple accents that made the scribble distinctly resemble a winiko. "Or... it can be something completely different." He flourished a bit more, and the demon became a series of waves rolling against a beach.
He winked at her. "It's in the eye of the beholder, ever changing, never the same. Art is like... well, like life, if you look at it the right way. Anything is."
The familiar bristled a bit, startled at the gesture of the other. Burying further in, the thing faded from view; the only trade left was two small horns poking from Valerian's mane.

Peaches looked puzzled. Most creatures responded with curiosity to her friendly overtures. The giggly orb didn’t know what to make of this withdrawal reaction.
Whisper grinned back at Valerian when he winked at her. This green winiko fascinated her. His creative point of view made her want to know more about him. She was so happy that she’d come to the beach today.
“I’ve seen my bonded doing things like that, but I never thought it could be art. She sometimes sews pieces of fabrics together and hangs them on the wall. I’ve seen her spend hours moving the scraps around. I thought she was just playing like I did. I never thought she doing something like this.” Whisper traced a claw in one of the lines that Valerian drew. “Do you make other kinds of art?”
