The proud peacock stilled, posing for a moment with a grin at his reflection in the water. How could anyone deny such beauty and greatness?

With a chuckle, he leaned down to drink from the small stream, seeming quite oblivious to his surroundings...while being anything but in reality. His ears tracked the tiny movements of rodents in the field, leaves fluttering in the wind in the trees...

He had a feeling for some time now that someone was watching him. Following his every move. While he couldn't blame them for wanting to keep his greatness in view at all times...it was starting to grow a bit disturbing. At least, if they wanted to admire him, they could do so to his face, could they not? He always liked hearing words of his praise.

The Alpha raised his head, shifting his wings more comfortably against his back. If the party decided to make themselves known, then he'd be ready. Until then, he'd simply act as if he hadn't noticed anything out of the ordinary.

On the other side of the stream, a slim, bright-marked wolf appeared from amongst the undergrowth. Barely glancing at the other helix, Sebastian bent his head to drink deeply from the stream. He had been hunting all morning, and it was hard work alone. Worth it for the young deer he'd managed to startle and take down, eventually; it had made a fine meal. He wouldn't need to hunt again for a few days, and he was glad of it. It had never been his forte, and he was glad of the rest and the drink now. It was only when his thirst was quenched that he sat back and took a proper look at the alpha on the other side of the stream.

In a split second he was on his feet again, splashing a couple of steps into the shallow water. He hesitated, looking at the peacock-marked, winged, wolf closely, a half-formed recognition in his eyes. After a moment he ventured uncertainly, "Altair...?"

Altair froze upon hearing his name, attention instantly riveted on this other Helix. Wait a minute...that male...those colors...

...he seemed...familiar somehow...

Eyes narrowing, the Alpha stood proudly, his posture radiating the charm and authority that one in power should. "Yes, that's my name. I...know you, don't I?"

A moment longer, he thought, filing through his memory. Those colors seemed familiar for some reason. Not that there were many brightly-colored Helixes like that, let alone any that would have escaped his attention.

They'd met before...yes. A long time ago, and briefly, but they'd met. What was his name?

Ah ha!

He really was brilliant. And quick on his feet too.

Smiling, the Alpha nodded to the other male. "I do. It's been a long time, Sebastian."

Sebastian smirked to himself. Altair hadn't changed. They had only met once before - and it had been a long time, as he'd said - but he remembered the other male's attitude. Even young, he'd had the same careless confidence, pride bordering on arrogance... and charisma. The red-throated helix smiled, and splashed his way across the small stream and onto to bank beside Altair.

As he shook his paws free of water, he commented to the winged wolf, "It has indeed. I have to tell you, it's good to see a friendly face around here. So." Bastian sat down on the bank, curling his tail about his feet. "How have you been since we met?" He tilted his head to one side quizzically. He'd liked Altair when they were younger, and he didn't seemed to have changed - although, he now noticed, he was rather handsome. Conversation would certainly be pleasant.

"I've seen a few friendly faces here, but none that were familiar before. Hopefully you'll see some of those too." Altair chuckled. The ladies at least were certainly nice to look at...

The Alpha took a seat, tail seeming, as always, to magically curl so as to stay out of the dirt. That thing was no pleasure to clean, so such behaviors were necessary, as I'm sure you know. "I've been well. The East is quite welcoming, or at least it has been to myself. I've met the goddess herself, you know," he commented with a wink at the other wolf. "What a looker. That assistant of hers wasn't bad either," he muttered, seeming to muse aloud to himself.

Shaking his head, he grinned again at Sebastian. "What brings you to the East, anyway? Let me guess...you were looking for me, right?"

No, he really never stopped.

Sebastian grinned. "I live here. Guess you don't remember," he added after a moment. It seemed that Altair had made more an impression on him that he had on the peacock helix. "And I can't say that I was looking for you in particular, but it was certainly a nice coincidence. Honestly, I'm just trying to keep out of trouble at the moment," he finished with a wry grin.

But after a brief pause, Sebastian's curiosity got the better og him, and he glanced sidelong at his companion. "You've met Helki, really?" Altair had always seemed ambitious, the type to go looking for such acquaintances, and to know the East territory's esteemed leader was surely a great advantage. Sebastian knew that much, even if it wasn't at all what he wanted for himself, and he wondered if Altair had made the most of his meeting, or if he'd just admired her beauty. 'Looker' or not, Bastian wouldn't have been interested. Sometimes he thought that gave him a distinct advantage over most males... but then again, he considered as his eyes swept over Altair's sleek form, perhaps not.

"Oh yes...of course. Well, these paws have traveled quite a lot of land since then," Altair continued with a chuckle, brushing the mistake aside lightly to cover his flub-up. He had forgotten, yes, as it had been a while and he didn't remember where he'd met the other male before, honestly. It could have been here in the East...or some other territory. He'd been a wanderer for a while in his youth and met others in all walks of life in the journey...even if he had ended up back here in the East where he'd been born.

"I'm sure it is," he commented on the remark about a nice coincidence, chuckling with a smirk. "But just what sort of trouble might be following you? Should I be making myself scarce?" He laughed, obviously only joking, but wondering just a bit what the hummingbird male could have been up to in the area before they met up.

The conversation turning towards the goddess and ruler of the territory, Altair stretched his back before settling down on his haunches, relaxed. "Yes, I have actually. If briefly. Honestly, spent more time with that lovely assistant of hers, but I'm sure our paths will cross again soon enough." He smiled at the thought, imagining the possibilities. If he could get a regular relationship going with one...or both...of the lovely ladies of the East...

Well, it was certainly nice being Altair sometimes. Could anyone blame him for enjoying it so?

Sebastian shook his head in amusement. "You flirt." Then he sighed. Altair had asked; he'd better tell him. Annoying as it was to have to admit his circumstances to anyone, he would probably only prompt more questions if he gave an evasive answer. "As for the trouble," the bright helix said with a sigh, "well, it's not that there's any following me, but... I don't have a pack any more. There's no one to back me up if I do get into difficulties, so I'm just laying low right now. And avoiding any of my former packmates." The young wolf pulled a face. "Honestly, they took what I said completely the wrong way. I knew I had to get out of there before I was stuck doing the same old things, following orders for life - but I didn't mean to offend anyone. Now I can't go back," he finished, frowning in annoyance.

That awkward bit over with, Bastian eyed Altair uncertainly. "You're a lone wanderer then? What's it like?" The peacock helix looked good on it, if he was - but then Sebastian supposed he must always look good. So far he wasn't finding it much fun, personally.

Altair lifted an eyebrow at the evasive answer. However, curious as he might be at times...he really did find it hard to want to delve too deeply in someone else's personal business. Now his own..that was another matter completely.

"Hmm...I see. Well, smart move. Inviting trouble is never wise, but especially not when you're without someone to watch your tail," he chuckled. "But enough of that nastiness," he waved a paw. Altair turned a smirking grin towards the other male, winking. "You want to know what it's like to be me, right? No use denying it. It's alright, I can't blame you."

He chuckled a bit before continuing. "Well, wandering certainly has it's perks. Not that the 'alone' part is much fun...some company would be nice. Well, regular company...not the come-and-go, one-night-stand sort. Oh, but the wandering...there's so many things out there to see. Beautiful things. Not all of course, but there's both beautiful...and terrifying...and some things that are somewhere obscure in between."

He seemed to have gone on some sort of tangent, a far away look in his eyes while he spoke. He trailed off, silent for a moment, then shook his head, eyes clearing. "Then there comes a time when you wonder if it wouldn't be nice to settle down in one of those beautiful places instead. So you can enjoy the beauty all the time. Of course, then you might just wonder if there's not something better just around the next mountain, if only you'd gone a bit further."

He smiled again, this one more thoughtful and less cocky than his earlier ones. "So just like any life, it has its pros and cons. And it's quite full of contradictions."

Sebastian raised an eyebrow as Altair rambled. Personally, he would have liked either sort of company. But one night stands were so much more complicated when you weren't interested in females, and he was out of luck on actual friendship since he'd left the pack. But in the end, he smiled, as Altair finished.

"Well, it certainly sounds more exciting that my life so far," he decided, "although seeing as I'm already starting to hate living alone and fending for myself all the time, I'm not sure I'd like that part of it." The bright helix paused, wondering if Altair had been hinting that he wanted settle down, or if he was determined to keep wandering. It was probably best just to ask, and so he did, as casually as possible while watching the other's reaction closely. "Are you planning on settling down anywhere, then? I suppose if you got bored you could always leave again."

He hoped, whatever happened, that he would get to travel or spend more time with the peacock marked helix - just for a little while.

Altair was silent for a bit, perhaps considering his answer before giving it. "Honestly? Perhaps a little of both. Afterall, I'm back in the East, aren't I?" He chuckled a bit, shifting his wings against his back. "I'm thinking of staying in the East. I may or may not stake out a particular area to live in...however, I don't believe I'll be leaving the East for a long while. It's much nicer here than the other territories anyway. More beautful...and more rewarding."

With a calm, knowing smile, Altair turned to the other. "I don't suppose the wandering bug has bitten you instead then?"
