So, I've been saying I wanted a new guitar for awhile now, but a chance just came up to get one, and I'm not entirely sure what to get. sweatdrop I don't have a huge buget, just a step up from my starting guitar which is going to my brother. Anyone have a suggetion for a inexpensive guitar orriented towards nu metal, various other metals, and rock? I guess I need a new amp too, and I use alot of wah if thats a factor...

well depends on how limited a budget we're talking

100-250 dollars : Epiphone SG and Les Paul specials are classified as beginner guitars, but unless you are playing a large crowd you don't need as many electronic perks as the Gibson originals. The regular epiphone sg isn't that pricey either.

250-400 dollars : Either an Epiphone Les Paul standard or the standard Fender Telecaster. (because everyone owns a strat<3)

I decided not to name any number higher because that would mean not being on a budget.

oh and I asked the same amp question and it turned into an all out fight over which brand is better.

Mesa Boogie is expensive, but the best in my opinion.

First amp was my brother's old one which was by Crate. It's pretty good, now its blown out but amps by Crate usually tend to be less expensive.

Thanks, that helps. I'm looking at some non strat guitars (w/ humbuckers); I saw some affordable ones by silvertone. I don't do alot of live performance, more recording based, so I'm looking for thrifty quality.

One that I find is a really good guitar for metal/rock, and is fairly cheap, is an Ibanez. There aren't a lot of Ibanezes out there that are 'cheap' but there are a few that are in the $150-$250 price range that do well. I'd suggest that.

That's almost exactly what I was thinking. Ibanez does have a few good and rather inexpensive lines of guitars that would do nicely.

Ibanez... my 'weeping demon' wah pedal is made by them. If their guitars are as good as their pedals, I'll have to check them out. Thanks.

Or buy used that works. That's what I do. You can get a guitar that's brand spanking new for a lot less if you look hard enough. The only difference is that somebody bought it before you, and they didn't like it.

Yeah, the Weeping Demon pedal is so awesome :]
And they're guitars are amazing too. It's the only one I own.
You should get one.

if you get an ibanez or a esp,

MAKE SURE THERE'S NO FLOYD ROSE ON IT!

I bought a really nice ibanez rg, but after a week i realized how much I hated the floyd rose.

You don't really use it, it prevents you from going into alternate tunings unless you want to mess with the screws so that the bridge won't flip out when you're tuning, and it's just annoying.

It's like a nintendo wii.

fun for 2 weeks then you want it gone biggrin

Thanks for the floyd rose warning, since I almost always play in 'drop C'. I checked out Ibanez's guitars, but though I could settle on that, I'm looking for a non-strat style body (I would love an sg or V looking body)...

I'm expanding on my original Q: What determines the guitar's sound? What decides whether it costs $1000 and not $100? What exactly am I looking for that makes it sound 'metal' (I always thought that was decided by the pedals and amp)

My research has brought forth two possiblities:

ESP's EC-50 ($200)
User Image
The ESP EC-50 Electric Guitar is one of the best values in a serious, hard-rocking electric guitar. The EC-50 sports a pair of ESP LH-150 pickups that generate super sustained distortion. Maple neck with rosewood fretboard on a basswood body provides great resonance while the shorter 24-3/4" scale makes note bending a breeze.

ESP EC-50 Electric Guitar Features:

Basswood body
Maple neck
Rosewood fretboard
ESP LH-150 humbucking pickups
Chrome hardware
Tune-O-Matic-style bridge with stop tailpiece

Silvertone Rockit 21 w/ Silvertone Smart III amp ($170)
User Image
The Silvertone Rockit 21 Electric Guitar Package comes complete with everything you need to start banging out the hits. This package is built around the super hot Rockit 21 double cutaway electric guitar, and the Silvertone SMART IIIs lead guitar amp. When guitar designers originally developed the double cutaway electric, we bet they never thought that years later it would become the first "Metal Axe". True to the original design, the Rockit 21 features a deep-cut, double cutaway mahogany body that allows complete access to the entire neck and has a deep, powerful tone. The Rockit 21 also features a very fast 22 fret, 24-3/4" scale bolt-on mahogany neck with a sculpted heel and rosewood fretboard, die-cast tuning machines, two high output humbucking pickups with a 3-way selector switch, two volume and two tone controls with speed knobs, and an adjustable Tune-o-matic bridge with a stop tailpiece.
The SMART III amp is an absolutely crankin 20 watt peak powerhouse with a 6.5 inch speaker, switchable overdrive, separate clean/overdrive volume controls, 2 band EQ, Tape/CD input for playing along with your favorite tunes, and a headphone out.

Available in two finishes: Wine Red and Liquid Black

Features:

10W RMS, 20 Watt Peak
6.5 Inch Speaker
Dual Input (Guitar, Tape/CD)
Dual EQ Bass & Treble Tone Controls
Headphone Output
Master Volume
Overdrive Switch with Level Control
Silvertone Rockit 21 Electric Guitar
Silvertone Smart IIIS 20 Watt Peak Performance Amplifier
Silvertone Electronic Digital Guitar Tuner
Silvertone Gig Bag
Silvertone Strings (Extra Set)
Guitar Picks
Silvertone Guitar Strap
Guitar To Amp Connection Cable
Silvertone Instructional DVD

I like the ESP, but I would still need to get an amp for it. Would the Silvertone suffice for my metal needs (i.e. harmonics & tapping)?
