Ok so my little dudes have been getting crazy blackish red wax in their ears EVERY day...it doesn't get worse or better...it's just about the same ammount all the time no matter how much i try to clean it out.

I've been reading a lot and suspect that it's ear mites, and I'm just wondering two things:

1. If I treat them for ear mites myself (I know I should take them to a vet but that has to be a last resort unfortunately because of huge financial problems right now) is it dangerous for them if it happens to be something other than ear mites? I mean, if I treat for mites and it's an infection will it damage them?

2. If it is just mites and I treat their ears, is it like having fleas and I need to wash ALL of their bedding and anything they play in? I've been seeing that people recommend spraying them for fleas as well, so should I treat everything?

Man...out of all the animals I've ever had I've never had mites lol. I'm not that sure on what to do.

I really have no idea XD

The vet should give you some perscription stuff to clean their ears with. That's what they did for mine. When I bought Ollie and Izzie they both had mites from the petstore.

Usually you treat mites with some ear drops. They shouldn't be too expensive...but then again, vets generally are expensive. gonk Why don't pets have insurance like we do.
Anyway, mine have the same stuff in their ears. I'm pretty sure it's just wax. If it were mites, they'd probably be having some discomfort. I just take a Q-tip and clean the ears out once a week or so. There's also stuff you can buy at the pet store, some drops you can just put in their ears to minimize ear wax build up.
But as always...I'd recommend seeing the vet just in case.

pet DO have insurance. ^_^ i used to work a few vet clinics. don't remember what it was called, there's at least two places to go through..but it's generally not worth it unless your pet is sick a lot or has a problem.

on the other hand the furrbutts are fine. no mites, and the vet i tried this time was WAY better than my last one, so glad i made the switch. and he's closer. ^_^
