Backlog, south-east Border of the Pridelands
Stalking after a bird, a snowy white lioness crept along the ground. As she got closer, the bird hopped around. A grin spread on her face, before Savitri leaped forward, claws extended. The bird, though, flew off, and she found herself empty-pawed. Letting out a growl, she stalked off. Birds, flying off like that... She paused, ears perking. Flying... Now that was something she wanted to try. Finding two trees close together, she began to climb.

After his last meeting with Savitri, Hodari was determined to come see the female sooner and more often. He had developed a rather close attachment to her, enjoying her creative mind and the games that she could come up with. What he had learned as he grew, however, was that his attachment to Savitri was much deeper than that.
As the days passed it seemed more difficult to get out of the den in order to find the time to visit her. His siblings were all getting older and not as eager for play time, but home life was changing rapidly. Kei had chosen to come to the pridelands and join as an official member. Hodari was the most pleased of his family, but his time spent with his father was time he was unable to find his white pelted friend.
Things seemed to be settling finally and his mother announced her second pregnancy. She grew larger and larger each passing day and needed all the help she could get. As the loyal son he was, Hodari stuck around, assisting in hunting and feeding of his other siblings, as well as his mother. Soon seven cubs were born and it seemed there would never be a chance to escape. With so many new siblings running around, Shiri was exhausted constantly, even with Kei's help. Seeing that Jasiri wasn't so quick to offer help, Hodari once again stuck around.
With the cubs now able to walk and not as helpless as before, Hodari didn't feel as horrible sneaking away from the den and heading out in search of Savitri. He could only hope she wouldn't be upset that it had taken so long!

Perched carefully on the tree, Savitri stared across at the other one. Could she make it...? Or did her Firekin blood make her too heavy? There was just one way to find out, wasn't there? Wiggling, she leaned back, then vaulted forward.
As the wind blew through her short fur, she closed her eyes, enjoying the feeling. It was... Wonderful. She felt so weightless. But the other tree wasn't close enough... It didn't look like she'd make it. Eyes widening, she let out a yowl of surprise as she flailed, turning so she'd at least manage to grab onto the trunk.
And out of the corner of her eye, she could see Hodari, making the situation emberassing.

Hodari hurried out towards the border, taking in deep breaths as he ran, hoping to catch the familiar scent of the female he had grown so attached to. He caught nothing at first, but as he became closer and closer towards the border between their prides, her scent became stronger. She was nearby!
Quickening his pace, Hodari kept a sharp eye out for the site of the bold, white colored female with striking blue eyes. When it seemed he had come across her location, he was surprised to see nothing. Where was she? The dark male scanned the grasses around him, unsure as to why she was invisible to him. Was she hiding?
It was only when the sound of a thick animal lunging from a tree overhead caught the male's ears that he looked up to spot his friend diving from one tree to another. With wide eyes, Hodari tried to follow her jump with both his eyes and his form, perhaps in an attempt to catch her. "What on earth are you doing!?" He asked, his voice seeping with worry for Savitri. It seemed she was always getting herself into crazy trouble!

Sheepishly, the snowy lioness let go of the tree. With a thud, she landed on the ground, tumbling a bit before stopping at Hodari's paws. "I was trying to fly..." Slowly, she got up. "It, uh... Didn't work too well..."
She hadn't seen anything but a strange rodent do it. The creature had jumped from a tree branch, spread its legs... And skin had stretched from foreleg to hind leg, making it possible for it to glide from one tree to the next. It had captivated her, and she'd hoped to copy the act. As she'd found out... Lions didn't fly.

When Savitri finally let go of the tree and began to slide down, Hodari felt himself release a short breath. While his friend's games were often times exciting, they also drove him mad with worry for her safety! As she tumbled towards his feet, the male looked down, a handsome smile playing on his maw. It had really been too long. Leaning down to offer the female a friendly nuzzle, Hodari felt himself cut off as she began to explain herself.
Pulling back, he shook his head and laughed, "Flying? My, my and here I thought the Firekin would teach things like that to their growing cubs." Lifting a paw and pointing towards the bird that Savitri had missed, Hodari made a gesture as though he was going to teach her. "Birds fly because they have wings. Lions do not. In fact, we obviously don't make very good climbers either." Hodari teased, feeling his playful smirk returning to his face.

The lioness blushed, looking at the bird. "I dunno... I guess it was the thing to do?" She looked at Hodari, then realized... She had leaves and bits of twigs stuck to her. Standing up, she shook off, sending the twigs flying and the leaves floating down. Whatever dirt clung to her let go, joining the rest on the ground.
As she got a good look at him, Savitri realized.. Hodari's mane had started to grow in. It gave him a distinguished look, as well as less juvenile. He looked every bit an adolescent now, the way his body filled out bringing a new blush to her cheeks. And something suddenly occured to her...
She was starting to fall for a Pridelander.

Like he noticed during every visit, Savitri had grown quite a bit. While it was obvious the two would grow as time passed, it was always intimidating how close in size the two actually were. Other than her mere size, Hodari was surprised to see that she was no longer the thick legged cub he was friends with but a sleek and elegant lioness. Taking in a deep breath, Hodari found his throat dry and his mind stumbling over what to say next.
It took a moment before the male noticed his friend's cheeks beginning to turn a pale shade of pink. He felt thankful immedietly for his dark pelt color, which hopefully hid whatever shade his own face might be.
He was hesitant at first, but a deep pull in his chest caused the male to go through with his actions. Leaning forward, Hodari offered Savitri an affectionate nuzzle. It wasn't the same kind of friendly greeting he would have given his friend upon greeting or farewell. This form of affection seemed to sum up all of the words he was having difficulty explaining.

For a moment, time stopped.
Shocked by his actions, Savitri's face turned a brighter red, the blush starting to spread down her neck. One of the curses of a white coat... She swallowed, trying to form words, but none came. Her mind grasped, trying to hold onto anything, an idea, some notion, words... Anything at all.
So she leaned forward, returning the nuzzle. It was all her mind, and her body, could do to return the gesture. A part of her screamed at her that to love a Pridelander would get her killed, but at the same time... It was too good a thing in her life to refuse.

Hodari would have normally noticed the blush, but he found himself too absorbed in Savitri's presense. They had been friends for so long. He was certain that Savitri cherished his company as he did hers, but was that enough for him? Could he go anymore days wondering if he'd find her again? It seemed the gaps were growing longer and as he waited for a chance to find her again, his fear of losing her grew.
Feeling her return the gesture was enough to calm his nerves for a moment. He had taken a chance and it had not been in vain.
Frightened, but relieved, the male finally drew back reluctantly. "Savi...?" He began, feeling the nickname he used on occassion slip from his muzzle. He wasn't entirely sure what he was planning to say, but he knew he needed to say something. There were so many things welled up inside him. So many things he didn't understand.
What were they going to do?

Still blushing, she looked up at him a bit. "Yeah, Hodari...?" Her mind was starting to agree with the rest of her. But the traditions she'd been raised on still nagged at her mind.
Before waiting for a reply, she looked at him, then back towards the desert. After a few minutes of hesitation, she licked his cheek. "I like you... A lot... But I'm confused... About myself..." Stepping back, she gave the male an apologetic look before turning and hurrying off. She had to think, and had to figure herself out.

Hodari shut his eyes for a moment while he waited for Savitri's response. A million thoughts raced through his mind and he felt his heart begin to pound boldly within his chest. He just needed to tell her exactly how he felt and leave nothing missing! He may have never really understood when he was younger, but it was always there! He always lo--
Hodari's thought got cut off by Savitri's sweet response, her voice as beautiful as ever. But before continuing, she quickly licked his cheek. The male might have been caught up in his emotions had he not noticed how quickly her behavior changed. What was wrong? Why wasn't she saying anything else? As Savitri began to explain herself, Hodari felt his brow furrow and the weight of his heart become heavy. He didn't understand! He was almost certain they felt the same!
Savitri's final stare seemed to be the final blow and Hodari swallowed hard. He watched as his best friend and love of his life bounded away.
Hodari was crushed.
