It was a deceptively calm day. At least...that's how it always was to Tara. But despite being on guard, she was enjoying just...being alive. Waking to have her eyes greet a new day with her now-large family still there...Only two things marred the perfection of it.
The knowledge of why their fledgling pride was gathering, and the fact one cub was not here.
Tara sighed and flopped down beneath a tree, enjoying the cool shade. What did Bavu look like now? Certainly he looked a little like her other brothers. But...what color was his head-tuft? How big were his paws, how long was his tail? She shook her head. No use in dwelling on such things...she knew she'd recognize him when they finally had the strength to rescue him.

"Doot doot doo~," Enzi sang, his voice awkward and quirky-sounding. He didn't sing often, but he was in a pretty good mood.
It was his favorite kind of day.
Huge, puffy clouds filled the sky, moving along at their own lazy pace. The sun was warm, but not too hot, and a gentle breeze moved through the air. Enzi breathed in the fresh air and sighed. It really was a good day...When the days were nice, he didn't dwell on the darker things in his life. That's why that kind of day was his favorite.
Suddenly feeling lonely, Enzi felt his lower lip stuck up and he walked out into the grass. He looked around for someone to talk to. He didn't see his brothers or--Oh, there was Tara.
"Tara!" Enzi called, grinning. He ran over to where she was and plopped down beside her in the shade of a tree, feeling content.

One of Tara's dark ears flicked toward the voice calling her name...a voice she knew to be her youngest sibling, Enzi. She looked over as he plopped down, sneezing at the dust and grass-fluff he stirred up. She gave him an awkward smile, an expression mostly saved for her family...and sometimes outsiders, when she felt it was appropriate to show her emotions.
"Hey Enzi." She bat a paw at him affectionately. Out of all the cubs, Tara had always had the most trouble conveying her emotions. But she meant well.
"What's up?"

"Oh, nothinnng." Enzi drawled with a sigh as she batted him, staring longingly at the clouds overhead. He snuggled deeper into the grass under his back, paws dangling. Clouds had always intrigued him from a young age. He liked how the floated; how some were fat and bulbous and others were thin and wispy. He sometimes wondered if they were rock hard so you could climb them, or soft?
Enzi turned his head to smile at his sister. Then he looked back at the clouds. Then he turned and looked at his sister again, grinning.
"Have you ever..." he began hesitantly, grinning. "Have you ever made shapes outta the clouds?" he asked.

Tara rolled her eyes. Nothing, huh? Well...that was Enzi for you. Always the most...innocent of them all.
Her gaze met his, and then followed him to the clouds above them. His sudden question baffled her, causing her to look at him again.
"Shapes? Out of...clouds?" No...she'd never seen anything more than 'oh, that one is fluffy' or 'oh, that one is gray not white'. "I...don't get it."

Enzi quirked an eyebrow at his older sister's response. How could she not get it? It was such an easy thing to grasp. At least, for him it was. He flicked his violet eyes back up to the clouds and stared at them.
"Well, you just kind of..." Enzi began slowly. "Look at the clouds and think of what they look like. Some look like trees and stuff." he explained, waving a paw lazily. He glanced at his sister, hoping maybe she got it. "So, what do you see?" he asked.

Tara blinked and looked up to the clouds. Why would a cloud look like anything other than a cloud? She squinted her golden eyes, then blinked again. Well...the big one right above her DID kind of look like a beetle...
"Uhm...a beetle?" She looked back to Enzi. "What do you see?"

Enzi flashed a smile at his sister before turning back to the sky. He was happy that she was able to see something. And a beetle, too! Even though Enzi...Didn't really particularly like beetles, he was still happy for his sister. But then Enzi raised an eyebrow at her question.
What did he see...?
He had been so caught up at the idea of seeing shapes in the clouds that he hadn't really looked. "Well, lemme see..." Enzi drawled, blinking at the sky. He wriggled his body deeper into the grass and sighed. Then he concentrated on the clouds. His eyes caught hold of a very large, bulbous one. It had a spiky back, long limbs with claws...Sharp teeth...Big, evil...Eyes...And a fat, fat tail...
Enzi's jaw dropped. The more he looked and focused, the more the cloud seemed to get closer and change in shape. Like it was coming right for him.
"A MONSTER!" Enzi shrieked, lurching to the side and clambering on top of his sister.

Tara watched her brother curiously...then raised a brow as he started getting that 'oh s**t' look on his furry face.
And then he shrieked. The golden-eyed leopon winced, then squeaked a 'oof'ed as he added his weight to hers. Being the protective sister she was, she rolled so he would be OFF her and she did her best to curl around him protectively, eyes scanning the area, ears back, and fangs showing to try and make any intruder think twice.
And then she blinked...her hackles smoothed, her ears pricked back up, and she looked to Enzi questioningly.
There was nothing. Then she looked up, confused. Had he seen something in the clouds? She couldn't see anything to have frightened him so...

Enzi curled himself into the smallest form he could possibly take, comforted in his sister's protective stance.
A few moments passed, and Enzi's eyes met with his sister's. At her questioning look, Enzi felt his ears flick backwards and he blinked. Suddenly pulling himself from his fetal position, Enzi jumped to his feet and cleared his throat loudly, glaring around the area as if ready to attack whatever he saw.
"It, uhhh..." he began in a deep, strong voice, tail swaying and muscles tensed. But after a few more "uhs", Enzi found that he couldn't find anything to blame his fear on other than what he had seen in the clouds. He was a bad liar. The leopon saw spots wherever he looked and guessed that the cloud had probably been too close to the sun, causing the monstrous cloud to appear as if it were floating down towards him.
"...Gods." Enzi cursed, sitting down away from his sister, head bent low and ears back. He glared at the fields in front of him and sighed frustratedly at himself.

Tara blinked and looked back to Enzi as he tried to find an explanation. When he couldn't, she sighed and moved to nuzzle him. Strange as it was, she didn't particularly mind his timidness. It was just...how Enzi was. He just needed to learn to direct it in keeping an ear out for real danger.
"It's okay, Enzi. Better safe than sorry." She gave him one of her slight smiles, gold eyes far from accusing. Now...what would get his mind off this...She looked back up, and poked her brother.
"Look." She pointed to a rather large cloud, the one she suspected might have been the one her freaked out about, but it had drifted to a different shape now. One even Tara could see without much imagination. "An elephant."

Better safe than sorry? If that was the case, then he was WAY too safe, Enzi thought to himself. But he felt a smile tug at his face at his sister's words and nuzzles; comforted, but still angry with himself. If only he could be more like Tara...
Strong, stoic, brave, smart...Everything a true demon hunter should be. And what was Enzi? He was...Well...
A scaredy-cat.
Eyes narrowing at his own thoughts, Enzi shook himself out of his depressed state. Sighing, he looked up to where his sister was pointing to. He tilted his head to the side as if to get a better look and focused on the clouds. Then he grinned and laughed. "Yeah! It's an elephant!" he exclaimed, turning to smile at Tara. She always knew how to cheer him up. Whenever he was scared, she was always there to protect him. Whenever he was sad, she'd make him laugh.
Tara was the best oldest sister in the world.

Tara purred and nuzzled her brother again. It was Enzi who often reminded her of why they did this. Why their mother had formed the pride. To protect those like Enzi, who were still unsure where they belonged in life. To make sure the demons' touch couldn't hurt them before they got their feet.
And he helped remind Tara not to jump into everything head first. Actions were great, but without thought behind them, they were as meaningless as most words.
"Perhaps Mom will show us a real elephant soon." She remembered seeing them at a distance once...Great big creatures that made the deepest noises she'd ever heard.

Enzi nuzzled his sister back absentmindedly, still thinking about his outburst.
"A real elephant?" Enzi echoed uncertainly, raising an eyebrow. He grimaced at the thought. He'd never seen an elephant, but from what he'd heard about them, he wasn't sure he ever wanted to...But now all these weird thoughts were bringing him down again. "Yeah," he said suddenly, volume raising. "If I saw a real elephant, I'd bring it down!" Confidence boosting, Enzi jumped to his feet and pounced his sister. "YOU'RE IT!" he shouted. Then he bolted away from her, trying to hide in the long grasses. Random games always lifted his mood.
One day, he really would be a great hunter. He'd make his family proud. He'd make the Mwako'bi'Giza proud.
And it would be because of Tara's help.

Tara chuckled, then blinked as her bother tagged her. The black and gray juvenile mowled a protest and took off after her almost-twin. No way would she let such a challenge go unanswered! But a smile tugged at her lips, and she couldn't help but laugh.
These were what made life worth living. The little moments of peace, and the random romps with family and friends. Tara knew as long as they had these little moments, they could make it through anything that was thrown at them. She grinned. Let the demons come...she had her family!
