His eyes could hardly be seen behind the mask her wore. His body was covered in a thick layer of filth; Kadaj, all together was a messed up, out of place lion. His fangs were sharp but uneven and his mane up kept and unclean. He was so far from perfect, perhaps perfection had forgotten him. Who knew- Kadaj never seemed to bother looking better, speaking better- or acting differently.

All in all he was very strange, very… awkward and had always been. When he was smaller he had gone through a good deal of drama, his sat back and had to witness his grandmother’s death, as well as the birth of her last litter, his mother and father’s never ending fighting didn’t really help his social skills any, and the fall of the pride lands and the birth of a dark pride that he now called home seemed to only y haunt him. He didn’t know where he belonged.

The red male stood still as he gazed at the female that slept in his cave. She was his bird, his caged bird that he kept and adored. Everyday he would bring her things, small tokens of his love. Today it was a bone, a large zebra bone. It had taken him quote a while to drag it all the way up the hill, but he did, for her.

He sat down and waited for her to wake up. He couldn’t wait to see the look on her face this time.

At first, it had been very awkward, and the young lioness had missed her home very much. She had missed her father, her siblings, and the lands that she had grown up in. At first, she had been devilishly afraid of the beast that had kidnapped her, the scary lion that was wild, the monster that lurked behind the mask. Slowly, though, ever so slowly, she had realized that this was just what she had asked for - she had wanted a fairy tale, hadn't she? She had been taken away from home, kidnapped by a scary monster, and all she had to do was wait for her prince charming to come and rescue her! Then they could live happily ever after.

It was this that had helped her get through the first few weeks of this strange new life, but slowly, she had also come to see that the strange lion that had kidnapped her was, well, not such a monster. He was sweet, he brought her gifts (even if they were odd gifts) and he stared at her with an odd.. sort of affection. Even if he was a little unkempt, she didn't think he was all bad. She could have had a worse kidnapper, surely!

It was probably the knowledge that someone was in the cave that woke her, for shortly after he returned, a large yawn cracked her jaws. Her bright red eyes blinked open, shut once against the light momentarily, then wearily opened a second time. At first, she stared at him with confusion, trying to discern what was going on (she was probably still mixing up reality with her dream land), but slowly she seemed to waken more.

"Is that for me?" she asked calmly, in her almost pixie-like voice. Her ears perked a little as she examined it from where she was. A bone (he seemed quite fond of bones) wasn't her first choice for a pretty present, but it was the thought that counts, right?

“Yes, it is for you. I got it just for you. It made me think of you---you.”

As strange as that was, he didn’t ever think anything of it. To him it was normal and a sweet thing to do, anyway; his ear perked as he smiled slightly under his mask, sitting still, gazing at her. His shoulders flexed as he spoke out to her, his paws batting at the dry earth below.

“My family, they left this morning for the Pride lands. My mother, father and younger siblings.. My elder sister, though- she stayed behind, like I did.”

He thought he’d share the news.

"It made you think of.. me?" she asked hesitantly, her head tilting curiously. She wasn't quite sure how a large animal bone reminded him of her, but she knew he was quite fond of bones and hard to understand despite it. She simply shrugged and reached out with a paw to pull the bone closer to her, draping her leg over it and leaning her head down upon the large joint. "I like it," she chirped happily, likely meaning every word.

Her eyes half lidded as she rested her head against the joint, listening to him talk in blissful silence. It was the name of the Pridelands that brought her back to full attention. Her bright eyes snapped up to look at him, her head raising slightly from its resting place. "..to the Pridelands?" She chewed at the inside of her cheek, timidly watching him for a moment before tilting her head at him. "Are you, are we, going to go to the Pridelands or are we staying here? Or.. going somewhere else?" She was confused, and her it made her brows knit in a deep 'V' shape.

“We will never go back to that place.”

He gave her a rather dirty look as he moved himself to s**t in place. His large paws laced one over the other as if he were pondering deep down inside; though in all truths he just wanted to itch at a bite on his paw. He titled his head to the side and smirked.

“I will never go back there.”

He couldn’t have said more, that was enough and really, in the end was all that needed to be said. She would hate him, he guessed---but from the looks of things so far… she didn’t seem to fancy him anyway.

He shrugged and sat for a while, thinking of something else to say.

She had to admit that his answer let her down a bit, for she would have truly liked to see her father and her siblings, but she couldn't do much about that. So, she simply nodded and rested her chin back on the edge of the bone, cradling it against her chest as a child might would a dolly. She supposed it might not be safe for him there, after all. He had kidnapped her and villains don't just walk back to the scene of the crime.

"I was just curious," she said finally, letting her bright red eyes fall to the dirt floor before her. Her tail swished lightly behind her, kicking up little puffs of dust, though she wasn't paying it much mind. "So we're going to stay here, then? Even though your family is gone?" She chewed at the inside of her cheek again, as was a habit whenever she felt like she was asking him something too personal. "Won't you miss them?" After all, she missed her own family, and she knew what it was like not to be able to see them.

"Curious."

Kadaj mused and looked away from her, her words were making his fur bristle.

"I won't miss them. No."

He answered with a nod, his eyes narrowing from behind his skull-mask. He was so sure of himself as of late. It was like nothing bothered him.

"Besides. You are my life now."

"Oh," she said softly, frowning at him a bit with the way he answered her so simply, so matter-of-fact. She supposed that was the end of that discussion. She had put her head down, laying it across the cool edge of the bone, when his words drifted over to her.

She was his life? She brought her head back up and stared at him with those deep red eyes. She simply stared, cocking her head a bit, as if she couldn't quite figure him out. "Would you take your mask off for me? Just for a second? I've never seen your face." It was out of the blue, seemingly, and straying far from what he had been saying, but it probably seemed to be a perfectly logical conversational step in her mind.

He just gazed at her for what seemed like hours, what the hell did she want him to do that for? Why was she asking such a thing- it was very confusing to him, and more so to his pride. Was this an attack or something? He frowned and sat down, his baby blue eyes narrowing as he spoke,

"Why?"

He wanted an answer, though he knew her never seeing his face was a good one, he couldn't help but feel somewhat naked without it.

"I don't see why you need to see me without it."

He stated and turned his gaze away, tilting his head.
