She moved over the ground with ease, her body slipping over rocks and sand much like everything was completely smooth. She was a snake, after all, so it really wasn't that big a deal, but still she liked to think about how cool she must have looked to anyone watching her go by.
Instead of thinking how much like an easy meal she might have seemed.
Hissing lowly, she drew to the water, having maneuvered herself to a small watering hole not far from Jeraha's den. She didn't want to be away from him for long- he didn't seem to like being parted from her company when his mate wasn't around. It was amusing to see the big lug so dependent on conversation now. He had gone from a total jackass to a big marshmallow in a surprising amount of time. Not that he would admit to it, always acting the jerk. She knew, though, that he had changed. He was a family man. How could he not be different?
Tongue flickering at the water, Vuvi smiled to herself. She was enjoying her new home with him and the cubs. Though she would have liked a bit more excitement.

Lazarus rolled through the tall grasses like a jackal on a mission. He peaked his head above the yellow strands, his ears flat against his head as he peered around carefully. In a moment he was gone again, ducking against the ground and crawling on his belly through the brush. He moved quickly but carefully, trying no to disturb the long stalks as he barreled through.
Hitting a patch of open, dry earth, he looked around before charging into the open, leaping and rolling in a somersault to quickly escape the dangerous vulnerability of no cover. Disappearing into the grasses once again. He drew near the watering hole, his simple mission of getting a drink coming to a close, but noticed that he was not alone.
Crouching low, he decided the enemy operative had to be immobilized. It was the only way to succeed in his mission. Grinning, he sprang from the cover of the grass, covering the distance between them in a few powerful strides before leaping on the snake that, it seemed, had been on a similar outing.
"Don't bite me!" he yelled as he landed on her, as if that would be enough to keep himself safe.

Vuvi let out a sharp hiss of irritation, very nearly digging her fangs into the foot of her attacker as he landed on top of her. She had managed to refrain just long enough to catch his yelp, which kept her from injecting him with a highly toxic dosage of poison. Still hissing, she slithered her way out from under the jackal, moving more towards the water’s edge and coiling herself quickly into a ball.
Head resting on her coiled body, the female watched this new enemy keenly. “I could have killed you!” she snapped, aware of how strong her poison was, “I have half a mind to call Jeraha over here! He’s a big lion, you know, and could rip you into little pieces! How dare you jump on me like that! What were you thinking?”
She wasn’t used to getting attacked, feeling herself much too pretty for that kind of thing. Still letting out short hisses, she didn’t relax, far too angry to calm down. A part of her still wanted to bite the animal and be done with him.

"I'm sorry, sweetie!" He said with a coo, crouching in a sort of bow as he looked at her under heavy, guilty eyelids, "I didn't mean to startle you. Actually. That's entirely not true."
He sat up, raising his clear blue eyes and grinning at her, his head tilted to one side and his smile appearing even more lopsided than it usually was because of it. His green tail was beating against the earth, excitement at having not been poisoned keeping his heart racing and his energy up.
"I totally meant to startle you, and it worked really well. Best pounce today, if I had to label it. I'm glad you didn't kill me, though. That would definitely have cost this pounce the title. Hey, listen, relax. You're not as beautiful all coiled up like that. Before, when you were all relaxed, you looked like a string of green and silver stones, shimmering under the sun."
Flattery was always a viable tactic, and was the one Lazarus unfailing went to when a situation was awkward, or tense, or if he was bored. "No need to call any big lions in on this, huh? I'm a good guy. I wasn't trying to eat you. Just... saying hi."
He let his grin fade into a smile, one of honest warmth. His eyes were still glowing mischievously, however, but that was very natural to the green jackal, and there was really nothing he could do about it.
"You looked bored, anyway. Are you going to tell me you'd rather not have my company?"

Vuvi glared at the male, never one to enjoy threatening animals trying to kill her. Or startle her. Or whatever it was this mini mutt had planned on doing. She still wanted to bite him. The more he spoke the more she wanted to bite him, actually. He seemed like such a smug son-of-a-gun and she really didn’t like it.
“Don’t be too glad!” she shot back quickly, “I still might kill you! I haven’t really decided yet. What a jerk you are! You think that just because you have legs and I don’t that you can leap right on top of me like that? That’s it, isn’t it? I can’t believe you!” She didn’t mind that he was complimenting her, of course. It just wouldn’t do him any good; she already knew how beautiful she was.
She didn’t need to be told.
“I don’t think I trust you,” she hissed, “I should get Jeraha over here right now!” He wouldn’t come. The male really hated it when she shoved him into trouble just to defend herself. It happened more than it ought to, really. “And I wasn’t bored! I was content before you came. Now you’ve gotten me all flustered! I can feel my skin peeling. What’s your name?” she demanded.

"Yes," Lazarus said, his tone short and his teasing in its effort not to be, "yes, that is exactly what I thought. Four legs here, no legs there. Definitely gotta pounce it. I didn't think I was that transparent."
He laughed as she rattled on, looking surprised when she put in an order for his name. Tilting his head, he offered her a pitiful look of concern.
"Why? Are you going to track down my family and friends and kill them, too? Good luck with that. The name's Lazarus, but you can call me Laz, if you'd like. Or not. I don't want to make you do something you don't want to."
He didn't offer an apology for making her flustered, just yet, wondering if she really would call a lion on him. That would make for a interesting use of escape tactics, to be sure. He almost wanted her to try, just to see if he could survive it.

Vuvi frowned, once again emitting a low hiss as she watched the animal. What an infuriating creature! He was the one to jump on her, and now he was acting like it was the right thing to do. Such a smug look to him.
Oh, she needed to bite him.
“I don’t need to know you’re stupid nicknames,” Vuvi said lowly, “I was just getting it down so Jeraha has a name to match the description I give him.” She seemed pretty set on squealing on this animal to her lion companion. One more bad guy to beat wouldn’t be that bad, would it?
He could take this little menace with three paws bound together.
After a moment, she decided he might as well know who she is. So he could apologize profusely to Jeraha when they did meet. “I’m Vuvi,” she said shortly, glad her name didn’t take a lot of effort to say, “why did you jump on me? Just to practice? There are rocks you know! Jump on those.”

"There aren't many jackals this glorious looking out there, Hiss. Even with out a name, your Sahara would be able to find me."
"Vuvi? That's better than Hiss, I'll give you that. I wasn't going to keep calling you that, anyway. Maybe Precious Stone or Jewel or something. I don't think I like Vuvi as much as Jewel. Mind if I give you a nickname? I know mine is stupid, but yours can be pretty. To match your scales."
He shook his head, "I told you. I jumped on you just to jump on you. I don't need to practice, and rocks hurt my paws. Plus, I wanted to talk to you, and that seemed like an interesting start. It's a kick, trying to work from a bad impression to a good one."
He tilted his head, baring his teeth in a grin, "looks like I'm failing pretty hard, huh?"

“You think that just because I’m a snake my name should be something like Hiss? And his name is Jeraha! OH! I’m going to tell him you got his name wrong too! He’s really going to rip you apart now!” She found herself looking for reasons to get more upset with him, not interested in playing nice at all. It was too late now for them to be buddies.
Much too late.
“I don’t want a nickname,” she replied, “there’s nothing wrong with Vuvi. You don’t think my name is nice enough to be used? Well, Laz, it is. And stop complimenting me! I already know how lovely my scales are, thank you.”
She was not made any more comfortable in front of him by his answer. “That seems really stupid to me,” she replied, “how do you make any friends doing things like that? First impressions are everything! You shouldn’t blow them doing stupid things like jumping on strangers! I’d say you’re failing!”

"No, I don't think that at all. You're a pretty presumptuous little worm, aren't you? I get the feeling JARihi really won't care that I got his name wrong, twice now, and I don't think you hate me as much as you're making out you do."
He grinned.
"I think you like being called Jewel, and I think you don't get told how pretty you are enough. How's that?"
Laying down, he rolled over onto his back submissively, looking up at her. He sighed, flopping onto his side, "Okay, I'll be nicer. I'm sorry I surprised you like that, and I'm sorry I made you so angry, okay?"

“You don’t know JERAHA like I do,” replied Vuvi curtly, “he’s the largest lion I’ve ever seen and he’s never in a good mood! So you should think twice before saying you don’t think he won’t care. If I tell him you’re being rude to me, he WILL care.” She, however, didn’t really believe that herself. In actuality, he wouldn’t care at all. He would probably tell her to grow up and deal with the problem herself.
Which she wasn’t going to do.
“You certainly like to think you know everything, don’t you? What makes you think that I don’t hate you? Even if I don’t, I’m certainly angry!” She simply refused to be nice to the male. She had convinced herself that Jeraha needed to know about this and do something about it himself.

"So you two get along, huh? I mean, about not being in a good mood."
He frowned, not wanting to be that blunt and insulting. But then again, he liked the way it came out, so he didn't retract it. He grinned at her, enjoying the way she accused him of the very same faults she was carrying. She had, after all, assumed many things about him. It seemed she didn't like it turned around on her.
"I don't think that, no. I like to learn new things, though, and make sense of the things I'm shown. You haven't left yet, so I have to assume you don't hate me entirely. And you haven't bitten me. Though, I probably shouldn't have reminded you about that."
He grinned, upside down.

Vuvi gasped- how dare he speak to her like that! Again! She hissed shortly, as though she were actually grunting, and turned her head up from the animal. The horrible creature, as she had decided that he was without a doubt, she just wanted to get away from before he was able to make her feel any more irritated.
“I’m leaving,” she muttered lowly, “I don’t have to stick around here with such a mean creature! Sleep with one eye open, buddy, because once Jeraha find you that will be it! I’m going to make sure he finds you and makes you pay for being so rude to me!”
The fact that she was being rude didn’t seem to matter much.
She started to slither away from him at that, moving to get into the tall grass so she could vanish and he wouldn’t be able to follow her. No way she was going to lead him back to the den. Jeraha would be upset if she let something come back to the children that he hadn’t approved first.

Lazarus watched as Vuvi reacted to him with so much disdain. He could not help but grin from ear to ear, shaking his head. He had never met a creature so predisposed to hating him in his life. It was entertaining, to say the least, and he laughed at her speech.
"I'm not mean," he said, more to himself than to her, "so I'm not going to make you stay here. I look forward to meeting Sahara, whenever he wants to come hang out. If he comes at all. Which I doubt. But hey, thanks for the company, pretty jewel!"
He watched her go, not following. He smiled and looked at the watering hole, nodding at himself and grinning to one side. That had been interesting. He had managed to jump on and then verbally piss of a snake without taking a lethal dose of toxins.
All in all, he'd mark the encounter as a success. He could not wait until he met her again.
