Something smelled really good. No-- amazingly, wonderfully, splendidly good. Her stomach gave a loud rumble, and Shee moaned and patted it. She couldn't cook at all, and as a result, she was hungry far too often. There was only one cook at LOTUS, an ancient Tibetan woman that seemed permanently bent at the hip. Wraith had insisted, for the sake of security, that they let as few non-recruits in as possible. Lhamu, however, was not here, so Shee wondered who exactly could be in the kitchens at this hour. Obviously, it was someone who knew what they were doing.
Tiptoeing around the heavy, marble-laden door that was open a crack, the sweet smell wafted past her as she peeked around the door to see who was inside, her mind almost entirely on food.

Lai was slowly getting used to the spaciousness of the LOTUS kitchens. These massive areas had to be at least ten times as large as the one his aunt had had back in Tomsk. Once the Russian had found this area he knew he would be spending a lot of time here and he was.
One stove had two pots on opposite sides boiling and simmering respectively, and another was frying vegetables as well as broiling steaks. Cupboards on all sides and from floor to ceiling were open; contents either out completely or looking as though they were going to be completely removed, but the person doing the pulling had decided against using that one thing.
Lai stood with his back against the island counter, his hair pulled back in a short ponytail and still in the same clothing he always was, plus some faded, almost vanished bloodstains on his right shoulder and collar. Hard soap was slowly working them from the fabric, but he really needed to get some more clothes. The Russian's head was turning from one stove to the other monitoring what was in the pots and pans on top. Nothing was on fire, so the man was satisfied.

Her eyes a sliver of blue behind the door, she could see a man leaning against the counter, surveying what was apparently his handiwork-- busily active pots humming on the stovetop. The kitchens looked in disarray, but Shee's mind was firmly fixed on the lovely image of something edible materializing in front of her.
She squinted as she tried to remember the man's name. He was the other new recruit, along with Einar. What was it... giving up after a few minutes and sighing, she pushed open the door and stepped into the kitchen, making a mental note to really try to remember everyone's names for next time.
"That smells really good. What are you making?"

Lai was about to step forward when the door creaked open and Shee stepped in. The Russian turned his head, the gauze beneath his right eye now visible, and was half relieved to see it was not Einar. He had no idea who it was actually. Still he threw a light, but nervous smile at the young woman before answering.
"Well, it depends on which stove you are talking about Miss..." He trailed off, with no name he couldn't finish his sentence. He waited for her answer as he walked to the stove with the boiling pots. Lai took the long wooden spoon from its place on a clean cloth and stirred the contents lest they stick to the bottom of the pot and burn.

"Oh!" He was making a lot of food. Shee looked at the man, eyes wide with adoration. As he began to stir the contents of a pot, she tried to decide what to ask about. Failing, she replied, "I don't know! All of them! You have so much stuff going on... are you planning something special?"
"Oh, and I'm Shee. It's nice to meet you!" Her words tapered off in intensity as she noticed the gauze underneath the man's eye. Hoping he was nothing like Einar for a moment before the question came tumbling out of her mouth, she asked, "What happened to you?", pointing at the injury.

He pulled the spoon out of one pot and stuck it in the other, stirring again. He smiled a bit wider at the young woman's inability to pick just one thing. After pulling the spoon out and laying it back down on the cloth he moved on to the other stove.
"Well...The one I was just at has pelmeni boiling in water in it, and the first one has vareniki, also boiling in water." He took a long metal fork with a wooden handle with his right hand and the handle of a frying pan with the other. "This here is peppers, mushrooms, and onions and that one is fried potatoes. I also have steaks in this oven." He brought his knee up and tapped the door of the oven he was standing in front of. "Broiling." Fork tool was put back in its spot. Once it was back Lai turned to Shee.
"Something special?" He questioned then shook his head. "No, nothing at all. Just cooking. I plan to wrap up all of this then put it in the fridge for anyone who wants any." Another smile. "Meals already made, I am sure someone will be happy to find them."
As Shee introduced herself he nodded. "A pleasure Miss Shee. My name is Lai, I am one of the new recruits here at LOTUS." Lai was oddly calm around her, only because if he got nervous he might knock something down, set himself on fire, or something equally bad. Never good for anyone. As she pointed, Lai raised his hand to his cheek, but didn't touch his face.
"Oh this? I had a little accident a couple of days ago. Do not worry, I am perfectly fine. I was well taken care of..." He trailed off, remembering how he got the injury and then the activities that led him to staring at the paneling of Einar's door for ten minutes before dashing off in a stupor with a dark red face.

Shee frowned, putting a finger to her bottom lip and trying to think. She didn't know what pelmeni was. Or vareniki. She did like peppers and onions though. "I'm afraid I don't know what... uh... those first two things you mentioned are. I'm sorry! It's just that I don't eat a lot of Russian food," Shee paused, fervently wishing that she had at least remembered the man's country right, "so you'll have to enlighten me!"
Pursing her lips at Lai's answer to her question, she tried to keep from looking too confused. "Well that's good! But, you know, as far as I was aware, I was the one who took care of injuries and that sort of thing here. I wonder who took care of you then?" Shee shrugged. "Oh well. If you ever need anything, I suppose I'm sort of the unofficial medic here, so just come see me!"
As Lai talked about his plans to stick all his wonderful food in the fridge, Shee's mouth formed a tiny circle, and her eyes widened again. "You mean... for anyone who wants any?" Her voice was faint with happiness. "Do you... do you think I could have something to eat?"
As if on cue, her stomach gave another loud rumble.

"Well, vareniki...This is lazy vareniki actually...and pelmeni fall into the dumpling family. The vareniki I am making is just dough made from farmers cheese, egg, and flour. This is my third batch, if I am correct. Pelmeni is filled with meat, and I guess you could say it is like an Italian ravioli. I will have to make sauce later for them or find some sour cream." Lai paused, thinking over what he could have missed. "The pelmeni is going into the freezer. But both are Russian." He smiled to congratulate her on guessing right.
The Russian went to the nearby sink and peered into the basin to make sure the colander was still there. It was. He took the pot of lazy vareniki off with pot holders before bringing it to the sink and slowly pouring the water into the colander. After all the water was gone he eased the pot over more and let the dough balls fall into the strainer before putting the pot to the side and lifting the vareniki up and placing their holding device down. He turned back to Shee and nodded, lifting his hand to the side of his face again.
"I was not aware of that Miss Shee. I know now though." He dropped his hand and opened the oven with the steaks inside to check on them before getting tongs and flipping. As she asked who took care of his face, Lai turned red in the cheeks. After closing the door he turned back again.
"Well...Einar Willason did actually. The other new recruit." A nervous smile to go with his reddening face. "I will keep that in mind, though if I get hurt it is never more than a scrape or a nick. Nothing major to trouble you with Miss Shee."
The Russian nodded as she asked about the food being available. "Certainly. Anyone who is willing to reheat it. It does not take much to, so I hope people will take it." He glanced at the vareniki cooling next to him. At the woman's next question he nodded.
"Of course! The vareniki is ready if you would like that. Or I could make you something else if you want." He chuckled at the rumble noise that sounded after she spoke. "What would you like to eat Miss Shee?"

Shee nodded enthusiastically as Lai explained. "Well, pelmeni is definitely out of the question then. I'm vegetarian. The vareniki doesn't have any meat, right?" She hoped not. The magical appearance of food and the subsequent taking away of said food would be a cruel trick for the world to play on her.
"Yeah! It doesn't seem like anyone knows, really. I'll have to send out some sort of message or something. Can't have recruits being out of commission! That would be very counter-productive." Shee nodded solemnly. Her serious mood was broken by Lai's sudden blush, and his next comment.
"Really?!" Shee began to laugh. "That's so... odd. I would think he'd be more likely to cause some sort of injury than fix it. But," Shee continued, in a rare moment of keen observation, "it seems like he acts differently with me than with you. Are you OK, Lai?" His face was alarmingly flushed.
The inching closer of her goal cleaned out any other thoughts from her mind as Lai spoke. She clapped and jumped up and down on the spot for a few seconds before composing herself and trying to look slightly less silly. "Oh! Umm... well, I could try your vareniki. If, of course, it is meat-free. But, you know, I really like spicy things. Or sweet things! Or salty things... or..." Shee faltered, trying to think of how best she could come up with a non-offensive answer, "just things that aren't bland!" Hopefully he'd sort of understand what she meant.

"The only non-vegetarian things in this kind of vareniki are the cheese and egg in the dough which make them. If you do not want that I will gladly make something vegetarian for you."
He nodded. "A message would be good. That way people will seek you out and not have to worry about anything major." At her laugh and next few words he mildly shrugged. "He was very good at fixing me up."
Very good indeed...
His thought trailed off with a shake of his head. "Um, yes I am fine."
Calm down Lai, do not get embarrassed in public over this... He rubbed his face with his arm, getting the color to go down. "It is just a bit hot in here, that is all." A short laugh for Shee's enthusiasm. "I hope the vareniki are not bland once I add onions and sour cream. I get what you mean though. Taste is important."

"No, no, that's perfectly fine! Vegetarian, not vegan." She'd been horrified when she'd learned of vegans and their general aversion to dairy. She shuddered at the thought of people who shunned dairy on purpose.
Shee laughed again at Lai's feeble attempts to prevent himself from getting redder. "Are you sure? You are awfully red," she said teasingly.
"I'm sure they'll be wonderful! From the smell, it seems you definitely know what you're doing. And I love onions and sour cream! I'm not sure about them together, but you're the cook!"

"I am afraid I have never heard of 'vegan' before, but all right. Let me get you a plate." Lai quickly stirred the other pot and the pans and turned the heat down on all so he wouldn't have to worry about the food within them burning.
At her teasing tone he nodded, but his face flushed again. "I am certain. Just hot." The heat causing his face to turn red was a lie and Lai felt bad for lying to the woman whom he had just met. He wasn't sure how she would react to the real reason why he was and how he had exactly gotten the cut on his face as well as the methods Einar had first used to clean it. Probably negatively, which wouldn't surprise him at all.
"I am glad you think so." He laughed as he reached for a medium sized plate. "Since you have never had them together, I will just put them off to the sides and not on top."
After getting the plate he got a large spoon and scooped some vareniki onto the plate. Afterward, he used the wooden handled fork and pulled cooked onions from the mix on the stove, placing them off to one side. He put the plate on the island counter in front of a stool.
"I will see if there is any sour cream. Please sit. I hope you enjoy it." The Russian smiled again at Shee before quickly putting the remainder of the vareniki in a plastic container and then into the fridge, where he started to root around for any sour cream.

"Well, all you need to know about vegans is that they're a little weird. Don't even drink milk!" Shee looked at Lai, sighing, not completely satisfied with his answer. "Well, alright. If you say so."
There was definitely something going on with Lai. Even she, with her mind on food, could tell that. Well, if he wouldn't tell her, she'd just have to find out herself, Shee mused. Something about that cut to the face...
As Lai place a plate laden with food on the counter, Shee bounded up to the stool and jumped onto it, before twisting slightly and observing Lai in his search for sour cream. After a few moments, in which he had no luck, she lightly jumped back off the stool and approached the fridge. Nudging him slightly, she reached across him and into the fridge, picking up a small, clay pot that lay nestled behind a larger one.
"While it would be funny to watch you try to find the sour cream, I'm kind of hungry. Lhamu used up most of the sour cream before she left, but there's a little tiny bit left. Wraith likes it, so she hides it for him."
Lhamu did have an inordinate amount of fondness for her brother. Shee was glad she wasn't here to yell at her for taking something away from her precious Wraith.

"Hmm...That is odd. I love milk and anything dairy, so I do not know how you could not like it." He pulled out a jar, looked at it, then put it back where it was. Was there any at all? It didn't appear so. As Shee nudged him over Lai moved and gave her full access to the fridge.
"Oh." Was all he could say when she brought out the small pot. "Well, as long as it is found." He moved over some more to a cupboard to get another container for the pelmeni. Looking in there were a few more left, so there should be enough for the vegetables and potatoes. The steaks might have to be wrapped up in aluminum foil instead though. As he grabbed two containers he turned to Shee.
"Wraith?" He had not met Shee's brother, and had not heard anything about him, so his face gained a puzzled look before striding back to the oven and turning the vareniki burner off as well as the one for the pelmeni.

"Have you met Wraith yet? Probably not, as you're still relatively happy when you say his name."
Her eyes lit up; Shee was delighted that Lai agreed with her. "I know! Milk is wonderful. And butterscotch ice cream... with those little crunchy bits! And..." A hazy memory of sweet, sticky kulfi dripping down a dark chin was punctuated with laughter. That smile mouthed unintellible words to her, and she was overcome by how much detail she was able to remember.
Staggering slightly, she felt the pot drop from her hand and hit the floor with a sharp noise, flinging shards of clay all around her. She reached out blindly, hoping to find something that would prevent her from falling.
