On a scale from one to ten, how well do you think Peter Jackson did portraying Tolkien's essence? (One being the worst, ten being the best)

Well.... I guess I'd give him about a 7. I'm just starting to reread the books, and I'm finally seeing how much they actually left out. But I suppose they had to or the movies would be like 32 hours long sweatdrop .
And I wish they included a liiiittle more elvish. But I suppose you can't have everything. (Actually, most of the background songs were sung in Sindarin (If I remember correctly))
What about you?

I'd give him an 8. He got away from the books a lot but the movies were still very entertaining.
The lack of Tom Bombadil saddened me though.

Well, for now I'm rereading the books because its been so long.
Omg, I can't believe it! I have absolutely NO idea what the scouring of the shire is! (For some reason, my brain decided to die on me the last few chapters of RoTK.
Yeah, the movies WERE pretty good.... (But I still get less bored with the books)

I pretty much agree with what's been said. PJ did a fairly decent job on the movies, though there was so much left out. :/ I too was upset that the scouring of the Shire never happened. I was also upset about the lack of Merry and Pipin's time with the Ents. We barely saw any of it! Overall though, it was a really awesome job on interpreting and adapting the story.

One thing that really bugged me in the movies (well, one of many) was Saruman's speech to his supporters. He spoke of the Age of the Orc and all that. But in the books what Saruman wanted was an Age of Man, ruled by the istari. All in all the movies glorified humans way too much. And although I deeply enjoyed seeing a mistrustful, bitter, jealous and possessive Elrond (Hugo Weaving rocks!) the whole Arwen situation was a bit ridiculous an add-on - instead of all that extra romance screentime they could have included some stuff from the books.

7.5 7.6
They were great movies, and most people* would enjoy watching them. They did an OK job of adapting the books to film, but they left out a lot of the best stuff, like for example Tom Bombadil, or the Scouring of the Shire. Also they added in a lot of strange things, and they made Gimli act like Legolas and they made Legolas act like an airhead.
*Most people. There was this one girl. So this guy comes into class and says that he and some people watched The Lord of the Rings that weekend. And she pulls this face and says "Why do you watch that stuff?"
