It was a vividly sunny day, one of those tail-end-of-summer days with just the slightest bite to the air. Anataela, who was prone to getting a little bit chilly, had discovered that instead of wearing a jacket she could just turn a darker shade of green and this seemed to help with the chilliness. And green always looked nice with pink, her preferred color for everything, especially clothes.
The sounds of shrieking children filled the air as the little chameleon girl and her guardian entered the park grounds. Vienne frowned, she wasn't terribly fond of going out among the masses. Ana, on the other hand, was delighted and immediately dashed towards the tire-swing, petticoats bouncing as she ran.

Jasper had honestly never been to a park before. Neither had Yeesha. The alligator's girl guardian, however, had found this park in an issue of "Kids" and decided it was a good place to take his new charge. Kids were supposed to like going outside and playing with other children, right? Yeesha had originally protested that she would rather go to the arcade, but Jasper had been adamant that they were going. They could go to the arcade on another, rainier day.
Upon arriving at the park, Jasper had seated himself on a bench in the shade. Yeesha had taken a moment to survey the whole playground, before deciding that the tire swing was her choice of entertainment. It seemed that Ana had similar thoughts, and the alligator girl reached the swing the same time as the chameleon. Yeesha's tail swished, as she stared at her opponent. "You thit on that thide," she announced finally, deciding that it might be in her best interests to share.

Ana blinked at the other girl, taking her in. The green skin, the tail, the little fin-thingies on her head... Ana wasn't a confrontational girl and the smiliarities between her and the stranger were enough to make her more than willing to share. Lucky for her... as she probably wouldn't stand a chance in a fight with an alligator.
"Okay." Ana said, smiling and climbing onto her half of the tire swing. "My name is Anataela. You can call me Ana." She'd always been taught that it was polite to introduce oneself.

The strange green girl wasn't going to challenge her? Excellent. It made things much easier for the both of them. Yeesha probably would have been a little pushier if Ana hadn't been green. There was something to be said about people who were her favourite colour. They were probably related or something, both being green and both having tails. Thus, she would try to be nice. So long as Ana did what she was told.
Yeesha pulled herself up onto her side and kicked off with her feet. The swing began to move, swinging lazily around. "You have a long name. How come?" She was glad this girl had a nickname. There was no way she was going to remember a name that long. ""m Yeetha. And you can call me Yeetha. Are you an alligator?"

Ana pushed with her feet too, giving the swing a little bit of a spin. "I dunno why my names so long. My whole name is Anataela Kalyssa Harte. S'really long." She grinned a little. "I'm a chameleon, not an alligator. I can change colors." She said this very proudly, as she'd been working hard on her newly discovered talent. "Can you change color too?"

"'s really, really long!" Yeesha announced, before adding, "I dunno if I'd want my name to be tho long. Hard to thay and nobody would remember it." She knew she had a nickname, but her daddy had only used it when she was really angry. Jasper never used it, probably because he didn't know it. He hadn’t made her take his last name either, which made her life easier. She could always just be Yeesha to her friends.
The alligator girl's interest piqued when Ana said that she could change colour. "Nu-uh, I can't do that. I can do death rollth though! I'm a predator in the water." She puffed out her chest at this, and nearly lost her balance on the swing. "What's a chameleon like? Can you thwim?"

Pink eyes widened at the mention of the death-roll. That sounded really scary! "Umm... a chameleon is like... a lizard. I dunno if I can swim, I've never tried." Ana gave the ground another good kick-off the renew their momentum. "Whats a death-roll? Whats an alligator like?"

"Oh. You should try thwimming, it'th really fun!" It was also fun to do with a friend, and even better when adults joined in. That way the two children could play Lake Monster and then the adults could be their targets. She had had great fun playing it with Jekel and his mom when she was little. "Tho a chameleon is a lithard... like thnake or not really?" She wasn't sure what classified as a lizard, but snake seemed pretty close.
Yeesha grinned when their momentum increased and added her own kick, causing the tire swing to twirl faster. "An alligator ith like me! I'm an alligator! We are really big and we live in thwamps. We hunt thingth in the water." She nodded sagely. "And a death roll is when we grab onto our prey and twirl around and around in the water. It's really fun! Have you done it?"

Ana giggled as they started going faster. "No, I've never tried it! I think Vienne - thats who I live with - has a swimming pool in her house. But it's a big house and I haven't seen all of it yet. M'not like a snake, I dont think. I'm like... like a..." Ana trailed off, failing to think of something appropriate to compare herself to. "Well, I'm like me!" She grinned, latching her tail around one of the chains holding the tire swing to give her a better grip. "Maybe you can teach me how to swim sometime!"

Aw, she'd never tried it? That sucked. Yeesha supposed that it was only fair that she could do it. It was supposed to be one of her unique skills anyways. "It'th okay. I'll teach it to you thometime!" Wait wait, Ana had a pool in her house? How cool was that! "You have a pool in your house? Like actually inthide your house?" That was amazing! Why didn't Jasper have a pool in his house? She was incredibly jealous.
"You are like you! I never theen a chameleon before. Do they all change colourth?" She would really like to see that one in action. It sounded very cool! "I can teach you how to thwim! I'll make sure not to pull you under or anything 'cause that would be mean." It was only fair if they could breath under water.

Ana giggled. "I think so. I think I heard somebody say something about it, but I'll ask. It's a terribly big house." So big, in fact, that she found herself getting lost more often than not. Most of the time, she stuck to her room and the kitchen. Even the gardens were intimidating! "And I think all chameleons change colors. See?" Ana stared hard at the tire she was sitting on and then her body flashed briefly black. The color change didn't last long, she didn't know how to hold it yet. But she was getting pretty good at imitating colors and loved the opportunity to show off!

"It mutht be really, really big to have a pool inside it! I wanna thee it. One day, 'course." Her daddy would have been very upset if she just invited herself over to somebody's house. He would say it was rude, and while Yeesha had never really paid much attention to what he said she did hear it all. Some days she was just better at remembering it than others. "Do you get lotht in it?"
Yeesha made a startled noise when Ana suddenly changed colour, yellow eyes going wide. "You matched the thwing! That was really cool! Can you match anything at all?" Now she wished she was a chameleon! Changing colours was awesome!

Ana beamed. "I get lost in it a lot, actually. But you should come over!" Of course, Vienne probably wouldn't appreciate her new charge inviting friends over. Vienne could barely get the hang of one little girl with altered DNA. It was, however, Ana's home too. And Vienne's possible opinions didn't even cross her mind. Joss liked her, and so did Cook. She could just ask them instead. "We can find the pool and you can teach me how to swim! It will be so fun!" Then, back to the topic of color change, she became thoughtful. "I dont know if I can change any color. I'm just learning how... but so far I can match almost anything!" She grinned. "I bet I could match you!"

"I would get lotht if my houthe was that big. My houthe is pretty thsmall, tho I don't get lothst at all!" Not to mention if she ever did feel like she was lost she could always scream and Jasper would come and get her. That had worked quite well for the first couple of weeks, until she learned the 'lay of the land' so to speak. Her room was always easy to find. Jasper had allowed her to paint a lake on the door with a large green alligator. She was quite pleased with it.
Yeesha nodded her head eagerly at Ana's suggested action plan, already liking the sound of it. "It'll be like an adventure! Or thomething like that." She tilted her head when her new green friend said that she could match almost anything, and then grinned widely when she said she could match her. "Okay! Try!" She stuck out her arm for Ana, watching her eagerly.

Ana had never tried to match something as detailed or exact as Yeesha. She hadn't even really played much with patterns. But she wanted very much to impress her new friend. So she stared hard at Yeesha, then reached over and put her hands on the other girl's arm, concentrating hard. After almost an entire minute it happened. Not perfectly, but close enough. Her skin became the same green as the alligator girl and a yellow patch even appeared down her neck and over her belly.
