Here's the deal! My good friends own a dinner theatre. It's very small and it is sometimes hard for them to put on big name shows, which makes it hard to bring in money which makes it hard to have cash to by the rights for the next show. I just got an e-mail from them that was sent to the regular actors about ideas for the upcoming season. I have my own ideas I am going to sugget to them, but I thought it would be a good idea to ask for ideas around here and get some more suggestions for them!
They are looking for shows that are "big name" but at a low cost. At least until later in the season when they have saved up some money for a big big show.
This is the things they mentioned in the e-mail, but he said nothing is for sure and that they would like more ideas to play around with.
In the coming weeks they plan to do a revue show, but then after that the are loooking from something that is a comedy show (play or musical) that is not really known, but has a catchy title. For instance, two years ago they did "Love, Sex, and the IRS" and it sold like crazy.
After that, they are thinking of doing "Pippin" for the early spring, but they might not be able to get a chrous while school is still going on (many of their casts for big show are high school and college kids) If not that then they might do "The Best Little Whore House in Texas." Again... catchy title, pulls in people.
For the summer they want a big MUSICAL with a big cast and KIDS. The summer is the only time they can get the kids. They are thinking "King and I" or "Sound of Music."
And at Christmas, they are working on getting a squeal to the show that they have done the last two years, "Christmas In New York" which was written by there friend Kevin called "Christmas in Vegas."
Alternatives they mention are Fiddler on the Roof, Guys 'N Dolls, Grease (but with OLD people as a joke), Chicago, Clue the Musical, Zombie Prom, A Chorus Line, Victor/Victoria, Full Monty...
Yeah so... if anyone has any suggestions, I am not gonna e-mail Rob back for a few days. Let your ideas fly! Thanks!
Things I plan on suggesting myself: Anything Goes Bye, Bye Birdie Gypsy Hello Dolly Into the Woods Jospeh and the Techinicolor Dreamcoat You're a Good Man Charlie Brown

You could try Little Shop of Horrors. We're going to do it in the spring and, though I don't have a good background in royalties, I've been told that it is cheap compared to other Musicals, the only really big onstage expense being the puppet rentals.

A chorus Line is a great idea as well as Pippin. They both require very little scenery.
