"Take care, little sister," Bevin sang, a smile audible in his voice. "Just be on your way."

It was the kind of day you'd call "crisp" that morning. Bevin was taking a stroll along the rocks just outside his newest favorite cave. Bevin had many favorite caves, but since he traveled so much he could never keep the same cave as his favorite for very long.

As Bevin's mind wandered into deeper and deeper thoughts, his quiet singing ceased. He inhaled deeply and exhaled through his nose, his yellow-green eyes squinting up at the early sun. His walking pace slowed until he ultimately stopped walking. A single fang stuck out of his mouth and gripped his lower lip. If you didn't know Bevin, you'd say he looked as though he were pouting. But that was not the case. Bevin's face had a tendency to put on strange expressions when he was thinking. A sad expression could be a happy one in some cases.

In this case, a pouting face was a more ponderous one. Only one thing was on his mind. And the more he thought, the more the thoughts pushed through him, until they finally came out of his morose-looking mouth.

"Where's Oboé?"

Just atop a rocky cliff, not very far from where Bevin stood, was Oboé. Naked of her costume jewelry, she was basking as "herself" in the morning sunlight.

Sweeping her tongue over her nose briefly, Oboé turned her eyes to the sun, not knowing that her nearby companion was doing the same.

"What a boring day." Oboé moaned quietly to herself, closing her bright eyes. She wished something eventful would happen. She was beginning to realize more and more each day just how much her life had lost its luster. Before, it was dancing, singing, dancing, singing, entertaining, moving to exciting places, the cheers, the audience, the praise, the FOOD...

It was all gone now.

Eyes opening just a crack, Oboé stared down at the dirt beneath her.

It was all gone...

For the first time, Oboé felt her eyes glaze over at the thought of being...exiled. She was an exile. She was an outcast. She was alone. Her friends had turned on her. And the ones who never spoke up against her did something worse; they had stayed quiet. But it was over. The past was the past. Oboé frowned at her thoughts and mentally scolded herself for bringing the morning mood down, however boring it had been.

A small pit of loneliness welled up inside her chest and she sighed. The image of a purple lion entered her mind. With a tiny sigh, Oboé flipped ont her back, large paws dangling in the air. She wondered where he was now...

A familiar scent entered Oboé's nose and she blinked.

"Bevin?" she called loudly.

Bevin curled a freckled lip to reveal his once-stuck fang, succeeding in making his face look extremely confused.

"Oboé?" Bevin returned her call uncertainly. There he was thinking about where she could've been, and she speaks suddenly out of no where. What the heck was wrong with that leopardess? Maybe...

...She was stalking him?

"Pfft..." Bevin felt a smirk tug at his mouth at the thought. THAT would be the day...Because actually, it was more like Bevin was stalking Oboé. In a sense, anyway. He was the one following her. By choice. Without being told to.

It was still a sort of...nice thought, though.

"Where are you?" Bevin asked in a smooth shout, head tilted upwards as he spun around slowly, searching for something large and pink.

Oboé rolled over a few times until she reached the edge of the cliff she was lying on top of.

Peering over the side, paws gripping the edge of rock, she smiled lazily at Bevin.

"Up here, Bevie~." she cooed from above. She saw his head whip around to her direction and she met his eyes. She bowed her head a bit in greeting and then stood up. She'd been so caught up in her thoughts and various recent events and meetings which had taken place, she'd not once thought about where Bevin was. The poor boy. He'd probably missed her. But he was a tough guy; she knew that. He'd proved himself time and time again that he was strong, despite his small stature.

And he'd left with Oboé when she was exiled.

With those happy thoughts in mind, Oboé made a quick, skillful descent from the cliff-face and sauntered up to her friend.

"Taking a walk?" she inquired, smiling. "Excellent!" she praised, an overjoyed gleam lighting her eyes. "You've been getting fat lately."

Bevin flicked his freckled tail sharply, narrowing an eye at his friend.

"Eh~?" he drawled, a frown barely visible on his face, though there was a glint of humor in his eyes. "I could say the same for you, old gal." he said smartly, raising his chin haughtily. "All this lazing around has done a pretty number on your used-to-be slim figure."

It was usual for Bevin and Oboé to go back and forth, back and forth with petty, silly banters. It was how they conversed with one another. It was how they first met.

"What've you been doing lately?" he asked lightly, as if inquiring on the weather. When it came to him and Oboé, conversation topics switched every few sentences.

"Ha-ha-ha." Oboé laughed sarcastically, shaking her head with each "ha".

Oboé's eyes clouded over in thought at his question. What had she been doing? Well, not much, but at at the same time, a lot. She tilted her head to stare up at the sky and watched a lone cloud drift across the open blue. It almost looked like...Like a male lion...

Shaking her head quickly, Oboé blinked and stared at Bevin.

"Well, you know," she said listlessly, pawing at the ground. "Same old..." she murmured. She flicked her tail against the ground and eyed him. "What about you?" she asked.

"Same old", she said? Bevin quirked an eyebrow, a smirk tugging at his lip to reveal a fang. But he wasn't amused. As we visited before, sometimes one expression could mean the opposite emotion.

There was never "same old" when it came to that leopardess. She never really did the same thing twice.

Was she hiding something, then...? But what was there to hide? Oboé always did what she wanted, when she wanted. There really was nothing to keep a secret about if Oboé lived her life that way. Besides, Bevin was a good friend of hers; maybe the only friend she had left.

The smirk remained on Bevin's face. "You know..." he began, his tone darker than his expression. "...Same old." he finished, each word stiff. Bevin knew Oboé well.

She'd crack soon enough.

Oboé went stiff at the sight of Bevin's smirk. That wasn't a very good sign.

Was it something she said...?

Oboé frowned; well, more like pouted. She bent her ears back and glanced off to the side, more than obviously avoiding Bevin's gaze.

Uh-oh. Bevin didn't HAVE a "same old". He was either hiding something, or...

...Plotting something.

"Bevie~..." Oboé cooed quietly, still looking away. She pawed at the ground, glancing once more up at the lion-shaped cloud. "Will you come hunting with me?" she asked in a sweet, pleading voice. Of course, it was all a ploy. Maybe he'd get off her case? He usually did if she asked him something nicely like that, for whatever reason.

Oh, NO she didn't.

No way. He was not falling for that right now. He'd get down to the bottom of all of it and find out the secret she was keeping from him. There was no way she'd get off with that little act of hers, saying she wanted to hunt. She'd probably just eaten, anyway. What was she saying? What a fool she was to think she could so easily make up some crazy, random request and he'd just forget about...About...

...Man...

That voice...

Bevin's stomach did a flip-flop and his ears twitched. His eyelids felt heavy and he almost closed his eyes. The way she asked in that voice was so...intoxicating. Why did he fall for it every time? She was a stupid, horrible...

Sweet...beautiful...lovely...Bevin's mind reeled and he suddenly ran out of adjectives.

"Mmm, okay..." Bevin murmured. "You're so hot..."

...

Bevin's eyes snapped wide open and his jaw dropped. The enchantment Oboé had cast over him broke in an instant and he gaped at the ground beneath him. Did he...

DID HE JUST SAY THAT OUTLOUD?!

Oboé's mouth opened just slightly and she felt her head tilt to the side without thinking about it.

"What was that, Bevie?" she asked hesitantly. "I...didn't hear you." It was half true, half not. She had heard that first part, and...well...a bit of the second. But not really the second part.

No...She hadn't heard that second part.

But...Was the word "hot" used..? Oboé shook her head, blinking. Well, she was sure it didn't matter. She stood and wiped something off her nose with her paw. He'd said he'd go hunting with her, she heard that. So, they'd better get going.

"Let's go, then." she said lightly. She began to walk in the general direction of food.

Wherever food was. But that was okay. She'd find it. Her and Bevin.

Because they'd always be together; always friends.

A loud sigh (louder than he intended) left Bevin's mouth and he gaped at Oboé, heart still pounding.

She hadn't heard?

She was walking away?

THANK THE GODS! he wanted to scream. Thank Oboé's short attention span! She was walking off, ready to hunt. Always eager to go and do whatever she wanted to do, whenever she wanted to do it, without a second thought to any one else.

But Bevin was happier for that trait right then than he ever had been. She didn't even care about what he had said.

But somehow, even though he was relieved she hadn't heard, he was somehow...sad.

But that was alright. No matter what happened, he'd always be with Oboé.

And Oboé would always be with him. No matter what she thought of him.

With those last thoughts, Bevin took off after Oboé, embarrassment keeping him slower in pace than usual.

He'd always be with Oboé.
