User ImageFreckles growled under her breath and watched the deer bound off while she rested, panting against a tree. Her pregnancy was barely visible, but she was already feeling it's effects; she was slower and hungrier than ever before. And she was angry, truly angry at Cart for getting her in this situation. No, that wasn't fair... it wasn't really his fault, was it? She was tired, angry, frightened. Angry at herself for leaving... but it was for the best. Cart needed to go out, see the world, explore. Not be stuck with her. Watching the young ones. Always at home.

Mostly, she was scared. Terrified, even; raised by Old Silverback, she had little knowledge of what it meant to be a mother, had never seen a dragon give birth... indeed, the parents of all the eggs she had ever seen were long dead and gone. Secretly, she feared death. She feared dying while giving birth to her eggs, she feared being swept away by the wind like so much dust, leaving her eggs abandoned. And she was afraid of letting anyone know just how much the prospect of being a mother scared her...

She was also well and truly lost. She looked around her blearily; even if she wanted to return to the cave with Cart, she was not able to. Very well; she had made her decision and she would stick to it.

Stormwind simmered under the day time sun. Her head was hung low as she panted, tired and angry. The heat was absolutely oppressing to her and the accompanying flood of light was absolutely deplorable. If Vexus hadn't been roaming the territory until the wee hours of the morning, she could be sleeping right now, as she normally did. However, the tides had turned and she was taking a double shift now.

Best to let the young one sleep, she thought. Stormwind didn't plan for him to stay with her for much longer, seeing as she was going to ditch him at first chance. Family was too scary of a thought for her. The mere notion of someone else relying on her scared the daylights out of her. After what had happened in the past, she had resigned herself to being pleasently alone and as such, she refused to be around others for any length of time.

However, upon catching the scent of another, she came to the conclusion that a meeting might be nice. Something was wrong with this dragon; nothing bad, she thought, but something wasn't quite right. Her slender legs slipped through the thick foliage to the dragons side. Stormwind's body brushed up against the females as she scooched closer. She was a beautiful blend of browns and white, with such very eye attracting markings.

" Why ever are you out here on your own? " Stormwind asked, not realizing that getting into anothers personal space might be offensive.

Freckles nearly jumped out of her skin when the other female approached. "Hunting," she gasped, "just hunting!" She tried to worm away from the other female, but was trapped between her and the tree. She paused, mind racing. What next? "Come to think of it," she said slowly, "what are you doing out her alone? Unless you're with others." Oh please, please let her be alone, she thought to herself. She turned to look at her new companion, but was too stressed to notice the horn. No, all of her energy was focused on capturing the other dragon's eyes. Willing her to go away, to leave her alone and not ask too many questions. Not ask her if she had a pack, if she had a family... not ask where her mate was if she was pregnant.

Stormwind calmly shook her head with a small smile on her face, breathing the fresh air deep into her lungs before answering. " I come and go as I please. The Earth is my pack, the night is my mate. I see no need to tie myself down to others. " Thinking of packs made her heart fall to pieces and bury itself deep within her. At one time, she had been part of a strong family that protected one another and shared in an over flowing fountain of love. However, that was all in the past and she could never get it back.

She gave the other a good once over before commenting, " You, however, are part of a pack. If you are hunting, then you should be hunting with them and not on your own. Surely you know of the dangers that lurk in these woods. " Phasing her claws above the ground, the white dragon seemed to float forward because of the light steps she used. Tossing her head over her shoulder, she motioned for the female to follow her. " This night, you'll share my kill. Its not fresh, but it can substitute what you've lost. "

Freckles listened with interest to the other female until she casually noted that Freckles was part of a pack. How had she known? Scent? Vaguely, Freckles wondered if she smelled most strongly of Cart, but was soon distracted by the mention of danger... and food. She shivered and hurried to catch up with the other female, willing to put up with even this strangest of companions if it meant she didn't have to spend a night alone in the woods.

"That's most generous of you," she said carefully. "And... thank you. My name is Freckles." She waited to see if the other dragon would supply her own name, partly because she was too intimidated to ask and partly out of curiosity over whether or not the female would answer the unspoken question.

Freckles? Was she serious or was it just some kind of gag to get her to laugh? The other female didn't seem to be chuckling, so she wouldn't ruin the building bond by being rude. Though, she couldn't keep the grin from her face. " Its no trouble at all, Freckles. " She nodded back to the other dragon and continued forward.

Stormwind lead her past a mass gathering of stones and upturned roots that would have been nearly impossible for a child to climb over. Yet, she didn't think it would be much of a worry for her companion. She never looked back to see if Freckles was following her or if she needed any help; just merely went on. It was then that a thought struck her and randomly she tossed out, " My name is Stormwind. Don't bother remembering it. "

When her pace slowed, though it wasn't that quick to begin with, she was infront of a small, dank cave. The entire area permitted the rank odor of an older kill. Even though she was used to it, her nose curled up at the smell. " Wait here, " Stormwind instructed before slinking into the small cave. She was gone but a moment before dragging out a large doe. Her horn came in handy when uprooting the carcas from the ground up onto a smooth boulder. Stormwind sat back on her haunches and nodded for Freckles to eat first.

Exhausted as she was, Freckles had a great deal of difficulty clambering over the rocks and roots, but did her best not to show it, and didn't ask the other female to slow down, not wanting to betray any weakness.

Stormwind... she filed the name in the back of her mind and scrambled up the last bit after Stormwind. The smell, oh the smell! Freckles tried not to show much it bothered her, but couldn't help but wonder how her companion could stand it. Surely she didn't stay here? Her sudden doubts about her companion were soon swept away by the sight of the doe. As soon as Stormwind nodded, Freckles crouched down and started eating.

Despite her hunger, she remembered her manners, and once she had taken the edge off of her hunger, she looked up at her new companion. "Thank you," she said simply.

Staying close out of sheer curiosity, Stormwind watched intently as Freckles devoured the deer she'd caught. Nodding once more, she smiled before replying. " Its no trouble at all. "

She looked up at the sky and smiled as she noted that the sun wasn't as high as it was before. It was slowly started to disappear over the horizon and for that, she was grateful. Almost as if to throw off her whole line of thought, her stomach rumbled. Ah, now I remember. How does one forget the last time that they had eaten? Well, if I've forgotten, then it must not be important.

Stormwind's curiosity was more persistent that her hunger. " If you don't mind me asking, why were you having such difficulties hunting earlier? Surely you know how to. "

Freckles looked away. She had never been a particularly good hunter, but up until now, had ignored the fact. She even took pride in her fishing method, arguing that sometimes it was better to have a little fun than to catch your meal right away. But that had been before, when she was part of a pack, when she could rely on others and could afford to miss most of her hunts. That was before, when she could afford to act like a child.

But how do you say that to a stranger, admit that you never really grew up? Learned how to hunt, how to survive? How do you admit that to somebody else, when you can barely admit it to yourself?

"My... father," she began, "No. Not my father, I have no father. But the dragon who raised me, he was a bit like a father... and he never... never taught me how to hunt. On my own, I mean." Too close to admitting the truth, admitting she had abandoned her pack! "I guess I'm still learning," she said lamely, hoping Stormwind would ignore her previous slip.

Stormwind tilted her head to watch a cricket chirping. Finding a mate for itself in a most beguiling way, something that she would never do. To sing ones song for the soul purpose of being complete. She rolled her eyes with a little smile and turned her attention back to her companion.

The female was most unusual. Stormwind had been born with the ability to where people belonged. Her mother had taught her that it was instinct, not something to be spreading around the country side like a truly special gift. Freckles screamed of pack life but yet, she wasn't with one. What would cause her to leave or worse yet, for them to abandon her? Terrified that she had been left alone, Stormwind steeled her stomach into silence so that the female could eat until her heart's content.

" Thats fine, then. " She smiled and shook her head a bit, ruffling dried leaves and briars out of her mane. Truly, she needed to bathe but compelling company was so hard to find these days. " If you'd like, I can teach you all I know about the hunt and hopefully you'll have more luck than you did today. "

"You would do that?" Freckles asked eagerly. Too eagerly, what had gotten unto her? Up until now, she had prided herself on her hunting skills, such as they were, and refused all direction. But now... yes, now she knew what it was be faced with hunger's sharp tooth. And what use was her pride, out here? Maybe some day she could go back and teach the rest how to hunt properly and - she pushed such thoughts of home away.

She lowered her head, trying to contain her feelings, but soon enough looked back up at Stormwind, unable to contain her excitement. "I would appreciate it very much if you would teach me how to hunt the way you do," she said soberly.

Would she really do it? Her group was becoming too large as it was. At this rate, she would have to leave very soon or have a mental breakdown infront of those who respected her. Looking at Freckles sternly, Stormwind sighed and smiled kindly. " I very much doubt that you could hunt like me. You don't have the right equipment. " The rainbow dragon joked as her paw lifted up to white the blood off her equally colorful appendage. " In any case, I will teach you to hunt like a normal dragon should. "

She trotted to the edge of the cave, turned round three times, then flopped onto the ground. " Finish up whatevers left and get some rest. Tomorrow, we shall begin you're training. " And that was that. Stormwind no more wanted to talk to this female tonight than she wanted to hunt down another stag. Appreciate? What she was going to do? How ridiculous! This should have been something her parents taught her, not some stray mongrel running wild in the woods. " Truly baffling, " she murmured, closing her eyes to the dark world.

Freckles tried not to stare, and mostly succeeded until Stormwind fell asleep. A third horn! She had never seen a dragon with more than two; was a third horn just a particularly rare trait, then? A bit like Old Silverback's goatee, perhaps, she had never seen another dragon with one. Or, perhaps, she had the rarer trait, and three horns were common, before the plague...

She curled up to got to sleep, but her dreams were full of dead dragons, and they all had three or more horns.

(( I am so sorry for my extreme lateness. D8 Please to be forgiving me? ))

Stormwind arose with the sun that morning. Her legs were stiff and had to be stretched out good before they were of any use to her. Yawning wide, she pried her eyes open to the coming dawn and saw Freckles. She smiled gently and padded around more quietly this morning, wary as if she were around a napping babe.

The carcass was beginning to decay and was covered in flies. Soon, it would begin to stink up the area even worse than what it already was. Normally, she wouldn't care but now that she had a house guest, Stormwind felt obligated to be hospitible. So, she grasped the stag's throat in her jaws and drug down the hill as far as she could.

She sat down for a moment to catch her breath. The bloody path would dry up and the cave itself was relatively clean, so her work should be done but her mind wouldn't let her rest. Something....something....Ah! " You dolt, " She grinned, thawping herself on the head with her paw. " Normal dragons eat alot more than you do. "

(( Hmm, three horned dragons before the plague. An interesting concept to think about, it is. :3 ))

((I'm late too, so no worries. xp
Hm... that is interesting. You could do all kinds of nifty plots with that!))

Freckles woke late, only to find that her mysterious companion had left. Groggily, she rose to her feet and stared at the place where the dead deer had been. Still only half awake and not thinking clearly, she started to panic and think she had been abandoned.

Old fears of the other dragon's third horn forgotten, she got to her feet and started to follow the deer's blood trail. After all, she had never spent very long on her own and, to be perfectly honest, she needed the companionship. She needed a pack.

She started to run, not wanting to lose the female, and soon saw her ahead. She must have been removing the carcass, she thought, starting to feel like a damn fool, and tried to stop. Unfortunately for her, she had been running down a hill and started to skid when she tried to stop. She panicked as she felt the ground shift under her feet, but it was only a little dirt and some surface rocks and she was soon stopped by the simple expedient of crashing into a bush.

"Good morning," she said sheepishly.
