Within the swamp there was a odd pile of rocks that could have been the fallen remains of a castle. Wild herbs and plants grew along the stones and within a small semi closed tunnel was a second you's vase. From the top of one of the vases with a pink dragon painted on the outside a small head popped out.

Bright red eyes looked around the fallen castle. She gasped softly a tad shocked. What had happened to the castle she was suppose to be a guardian for? She slipped from the vase naked her pale purple body sparked in the low light. Red scales on her head and arms as well as her tails shone threw and would glint as she moved. She tilted her head looking around trying to find signs of life...or what had happened.

She moved over towards a brighter vase with a gryphon painted on it and looked up at a torn silver dragon crest. She pulled the woven symbol down and pulled it over her body her tail swaying and her red wings flapping showing silver clasps of servitude along their ridges.

She then moved to crawl up towards the mouth of the gryphon vase and look in, had the other guardian died like the rest of the castle...

For days there had been feathers spouting from the top of the wide-lipped vase but now it was still and silent. A small, dark shape could be seen inside of it, and suddenly a pair of glowing yellow eyes appeared. Black feathered wings shot out of the top, followed by a black tail, and then suddenly the entire vase tipped over, landing softly in the thick grasses of the swamp. The tail snaked backwards out of the vase, followed by wriggling, taloned feet, a shaking dusky bottom, the black feathered wings, and a shock of black hair with two 'horns' where it was longer and thicker.

The boy sat in the grass and looked around, golden eyes taking in the sight of everything around him. He clicked his black beak in annoyance and frustration when he saw the crumbling ruins of the castle, and short black claws shot from his fingertips and he clutched angrily at the ground.

Failure - that was what he was. A failure. He reached behind himself and grabbed the tabard that had fallen out of his vase with him, pulling it over his head and looking at his fellow guardian, his expression growing defeated.

Now what?

The small dragon looked over from the broken griffon vase she was looking into. Slowly she walked over towards him. Her eyes sad and her hard eye ridges preventing her from showing too much sorrow.

Her wings were lowered and folded against her back. She reached a taloned hand to take ahold of his shoulder and lowered her head to nuzzle under his chin. She could not understand why they had not been called out in the time of need why they had not been awakened.

She gently nipped at the collar of his tabard trying to seek some knowledge or comfort.

The griffin lowered his chin to her shoulder, his eyes still wide, staring at the crumbled castle next to them. He was as confused as she was - he didn't know what had happened, or why they, the two castle guardians, had not been called to defend it against whatever it was that had happened. His wings flapped in anger and frustration, and he clicked his beak once more before he sighed helplessly and patted the dragon's back, trying to comfort his companion.

But his tail continued to flick back and forth in agitation, showing that he was not as calm as he felt.

The dragon's bright eyes watched the tail moving and listened to the beak snaps. She knew he was just as worried as she was. As she started to bring her eyes up from the tail she looked at the other part of the tunnel.

She could see the smashed vases of their fallen others. Had every dragon or gryphon been awakened but them? She nipped at his neck again then moved her body from his. She nodded her head to him and using her small wings to help her she jumped and climbed out one of the holes in the top of the tunnel to look around.

As her eyes scanned the now swamp her heart sank. Though she had never seen the castle seeing it in ruins broke her heart. Her tail hung straight how sway only slightly. Why had they no been awaken until now...what were they to do if they had nothing to guard?

The little griffin looked away from the fallen vases. He hated the reminder of his failure, of his weakness, his vulnerability. He needed to get them out of his sight ...

He followed his dragon companion out of the tunnel, trying to run away from the symbols of his weakness, but the first thing he saw once he was in the open air was the ruins of the crumbled castle. He let out a squawk of rage and beat his wings angrily. How could such a thing have happened? Why had they not been awakened in time?

The beating of his wings became rhythmic, and he lifted into the air and flew over to the ruins to examine them more closely. Surely there had to be some clue ... surely there had to be something to show what had happened, and why ...

The small dragon seeing the gryphon up in the air sighed and moved to look on the ground. She dropped to her hands and feet. She walked around the cold water it was up to her shoulders as she moved and looked around. She could hear the anger within her partner. But she could not voice hers.

The griffin examined the castle ruins closely, circling them, poking his beak here and there and everywhere, trying to figure out what had happened to it ... but there were no indications, no clues, no hints, nothing to tell what might have happened ...

He gave up, wings drooping sadly on his back, and sat next to it. He crawled down to meet his dragon companion, stopping just short of the water and watching her through doleful eyes.

The dragon ducked under the water having felt and smelt something odd. She came up her face full of sorrow. She looked at the gryphon and pushed up a more animal like dragon skull up. It looked like it had died of old age or starvation. She looked at him from the skull holding on a bit of the horns.

She gave a soft whimper then let out a screech.

The little griffin's eyes grew wide at the sight of the skull, and he froze for a moment, frightened momentarily by the confirmation of what they had feared all along. The others had indeed died ... they were the only two left ...

He spread his wings and flew quickly to the dragon's side, knocking the skull from her hands and wrapping his arms around her head, nuzzling her with his cheek, making soft clicking noises to her, trying to calm her down. He nipped at her long, flowing hair, then patted her head gently.

Inside, he was as upset as she was - but there was nothing they could do to change the past, and he was going to look forward and see what they could do now, for their present, and their future.

As soon as the male's arm were around her the dragon spread her claws over his chest. She could not believe they were alone. The two of them. Her mind started to race trying to figure out what to do. Should they rebuild....breed more...try to find blood masters or new masters?

Her body relaxed at the soft clicks and the slight grooming from his killing beak. She burbled softly and nipped at his chest threw the clothe then yup at his jaw, her hair falling over her face. She cooed gently and started to guide him back towards the shelter of their tunnel. Though she was torn she knew they would need food...but they should not go out together.

The soft sounds that came from the dragon's throat soothed the griffin, convincing him that she had calmed down as well, though he knew that it didn't mean she was all right with the situation, not any more than he was ... which wasn't much. He followed her back towards the tunnel, glancing over his shoulder every few seconds to watch out for anything that might pose any sort of danger to them - or that might serve as a source of food. New he might be, but he recognized the feel of an empty belly.

The small dragon nipped gently at his cheek and giving his shoulder a squeeze she took up into the wings spreading her wings and flapping strongly. She allowed her eyes to gaze around for any movement within the quiet swamp.

She smiled and dove down towards the water catching and killing a small snake with her fangs.

Walking slowly she carried the dead snake over to her companion.

He was a little surprised when she flew off without him, and he watched her anxiously to make sure nothing was going to happen to her as she hunted. When she returned to him only a few short minutes later, he clicked his beak softly with relief - she was safe.

And she had brought food.

He smiled brightly and clapped his hands together, then rushed to greet his companion, coming up in front of her and bowing his head to her to show his respect for her and for her catch.
