September 3rd at 10PM (Eastern/Pacific) on the Food Network. Dinner Impossible is doing "No Pork/No Pressure" The chef, Michael Symon, is doing a passover meal for a temple's congregation.
Michael Symon is Catholic, and has something like "I heart Pork" tattooed across his chest.
He has never made a kosher meal before. He doesn't know the rules, the laws, nor the customs of Kashruit or Pesach.
So... for all those here who want to learn along with Chef Symon about Glat Kosher cooking and Pesach meals. Tune in.
Later we shall discuss what we saw and if there will be any repeats to anyone who forgot to set their Tivos to record it.

It sounds like non-kosher waiting to happen, actually. One of the first rules of kashrut is that a Jew must do the cooking (that is, they must be the one to turn on the heat, they must be the one to put the pot on the heat, and they must stir the pot at least once and/or add at least one ingredient to the pot themselves.
I wish him good luck, but honestly, I don't hold out a lot of hope that the rules will be kept. I'm sure this will not be a halachically kosher meal. It'll be "kosher-style," which is not kosher at all. 99% kosher = 100% not-kosher.

To the best of my knowledge, a rabbi will be attending him, to instruct him on everything from menu planning, to kitchen layout, to keeping it kosher. So I have high confidence that he won't piss off an entire culture in one half hour episode.

Like no one has ever done that before.
I'm sure the rabbi will instruct him well and he'll do pretty well.
I admit, the end result may not be fully kosher, bu it's okay for us liberals!

Behatzlacha-S I admit, the end result may not be fully kosher, bu it's okay for us liberals! Pardon my french but... you don't ******** around when it comes to The Seder. Especially for the festive meal for the entire congregation of a temple. Even the most reformed synagogue will follow glat kosher rules for their kitchen.

Even if it is a Catholic, it's cool that he wants to make this a part of his show (or that Jewish producers do, whatever). Truth is, I've read on kashrut to the point that I could write novels and I'd still mess up. Plus, like Divash said, rule one includes Jews which I happen to be short on. wink I'm sure with your magical powers you'll find it on Youtube or something.

and now the post mortem...
I liked the episode, I thought he did well for a guy who never made a kugel before.
However what really interested me was the gefilte fish thing he made.
Gefilte fish is usually are usually steamed or boiled or served in an aspic. You know, the jelly stuff that doubles for paper mache glue.
What he did was season the raw ground fish, made patties, coated them in matzo meal with what looked like parsley or oregano or some other leafy green herb, and fried them up like crab cakes.
I'm stealing that idea, I thought that was an awesome way to do gefilte fish.

Sounds like what I do, actually, when I'm making my own instead of buying the stuff in a jar. I also make a mean salmon croquette.

I like it, though I didn't much appriciate that woman constantly correcting him. "This is how my mother does it, this is how I do it."
... well lady this isn't the cooking your mother or you would do so SHA aka... zip da lips.
I felt so bad for him when he couldn't use the coconut flakes, I did that one time completely. I got something that I thought was kosher, but it wasn't. sad I was very heart broken. I almost wanted to go find him some and give him a big supportive hug, because he was in pork withdrawl.

YvetteEmilieDupont I felt so bad for him when he couldn't use the coconut flakes, I did that one time completely. It's important to realize that flaked coconut is usually coated in cornstarch to prevent it from clumping together. Thus, it's kosher, but not passover kosher. In his defense, it was very small print.

That was a good episode, and I like this chef better than the British (who BTW lied on his resume). Oh and the tattoo said 'Got Pork".

EVERY TIME I'm in the kitchen I get something to that effect. "Don't stir that dough too much Catherine, it will get tough." "Are you sure parchment paper won't burst into flames in the oven Catherine?" "We never use milk in our pasta water." It makes you want to strangle people! That's why I like doing kosher food, everyone just nods their heads and doesn't bother me.
