Shiri had made her normal daily circuit about town, and her bag felt no less empty than it had when she had set out from her house that morning. She wondered where all of her downtrodden and lost had run off to. Usually, they were at their corners, in their alleyways, long since used to the tall, slightly awkward girl and her chocolate cookies and her listening ear. Now, she could barely find Three Fingered Jack or Crazy Carl, and even though they accepted her normal offer, they refused to say what was making them so restless and rendered their companions absent. She sighed, now wandering the streets much earlier than she had intended. She knew that, in light of her unsuccessful venture for the day, she should return home as soon as possible, if only to save the chocolate chips in the cookies from melting. Yet still she trudged, mildly curious (Shiri could never worry; Eros made sure of that) as to where all her friends disappeared.

'Perhaps it is the heat.' Eros's honey murmur suggested, concerned, as she was of the fate of the poor men and women who called the streets their home.

"Maybe it's the Game. I hear there have been strange things going on in town. Not that I've seen any of it." There was a slight twinge of reproach in Shiri's voice. "You kept me in my room for most of it."

Eros was silent for a moment, then replied, 'I am certain we'll find them eventually.'

Shiri gave an expansive shrug and, seemingly dazed smile still on her lips, continued wandering.

Keahi loved wandering around town. Anything to get out of that overcrowded house he lived in. Currently, he was wandering town, his turtle shell in hand. This whole Game was still new to him and he hadn't met any other players yet. Honu had said he would meet some soon, but that hadn't happened yet.

The boy's nose caught the scent of delicious cookies. "Mmm..." Time to follow his nose! And hope that whoever had those cookies had learned to share!

Shiri sighed shortly and made a small loop, going back the way she came. "The cookies are melting, Eros," she murmured, with all the love and loss of an artist being informed that her work had been thrown out with the trash. "Maybe I should go back home."

'If that is what you desire.' Eros replied. There was the sudden sense of his attention being distracted, like when somebody has suddenly opened the burrito-blanket one had been wrapped up in, letting a draft of coldness seep into one's toasty warmth. That enveloping warmth soon returned in full strength, however, and Shiri caught the sense of distress in his thoughts. 'Shiri, it would most definitely be best to go home now.'

Shiri paused and asked, "But why?"

There was a sense of hesitation. 'Another godling. Close by.'

"Really?" Shiri looked intrigued.

'Yes. And that is why I advise that we leave, as soon as possible.'

Shiri blinked and looked around. "I say we wait." And she plopped down on the ground, opening her bag for container of her still-fresh cookies.

Keahi continued to wander about, following the smell of cookies for a while. He finally spotted the source and smiled. She looked nice and like she'd give him a cookie... or five.

"She's a Player."

"That's not very nice, Honu..." Keahi paused to scold his god.

"No.... in the Game. A godling." Honu'aumakua's voice sounded a bit peeved that the boy hadn't understood right away.

"Oh. Ooooh." The boy got it now. "So... should I avoid her?" He'd stopped now, a short distance away from the girl.

"I don't see why you should... go ahead and talk. You never know, maybe you can make an alliance. Beats getting beat up, right?"

And so Keahi continued forward. "Hi." He smiled at Shiri. "Those cookies smell wonderful."

Shiri grinned and stood, container of cookies still in hand. "You think so? I made them this morning. Would you like some?" She offered it out, sure that the delicious scent was wafting towards him now. She gave him a pleasant smile. "You can take as many as you like."

Eros gave a soft, breathy sigh. 'Shiri....' Then another sigh and the sense of him pulling back, resigned to simply watching the meeting. He could only do so much, and if his godling decided not to listen, it would be the height of folly to beat himself up overly too much about it. 'He has no malignancy about him; all the same, be careful.'

Shiri nodded, making a mental note to be extra nice to him when they got home.

Keahi grinned and took a cookie. "Thanks," He took a bite and his smile grew. A moment's pause as he swallowed the cookie in his mouth. "Taste even better than they smell!" Hey, the Game wasn't so bad, if he was getting free cookies from the other godlings.

The boy sat, gesturing for the girl to join him. "I'm Keahi."

Shiri folded her long legs to sit lightly beside him. She left the cookies balanced on her knee so that he could take as much as he wanted. "Shiri." She answered, holding out a hand. "And thanks for the compliment. It's a little hobby of mine. I've made friends with some of the local transients and it seems that they like cookies. Every so often I go out and about and share 'em. But no one's been here, so I guess it's our feast." She took a cookie of her own and munched into it. She smiled, feeling the chocolate melting already on her tongue. "So, you live around here?" She asked, after she had finished with the bite of cookie, curious as to her new friend.

"Who doesn't love cookies?" Keahi smiled, finishing his first and taking another. "Not really, I live closer to Harbor... but I like to get out of the house a lot. Got too many siblings at home." The boy gave a sigh. "Too crowded there."

"What about you? You must live close if you come here often..."

"Mmmm....Sorta. I just walk around....I live in Middling. Somewhere...that way." She pointed behind her and to the left. "But usually I go wherever my feet take me." She took another bite of her first cookie, savoring it in her mouth. "So how many brothers and sisters do you have?" She was interested in large families, even if her own was far from it. She wondered if all sisters were as ill-intentioned as her own.

"Ah, I see..." Keahi bit into the cookie and waited until he'd finished the bite before answer. "Ten. Five brothahs and five sistahs." He sighed. "I think my mom may be expectin' another..." A frown at that. It would make 12 kids... unless it was another set of twins.

"Sometimes I wondah about mah parents..."

Shiri's eyes went wide. "Really?" She asked, almost breathless with amazement. "Such a large family." She stared at him almost wistfully. "That must be so wonderful, having so many children."

The was a slightly uncomfortable sound from Eros, which Shiri used to redirect her focus back to Keahi rather than beyond him.

"You see, I'm somewhat of an oddity. My mother and father...they can't have children....Except me. It's rather sad, in all honesty. I'm their only natural child. But I have two sister--adopted, you see. What's it like, having so many siblings?"

"Wonderful?" Keahi wondered just what this girl was on. Ah, an only child... in a way. He'd almost switch places with her. "It's... loud, confusin', and can give ya a headache. I'm in tha middle, got oldah siblings and youngah silbings." The boy shrugged.

"Wha's it like to be in a small family?" He'd never really known small. All he knew was large.

"Well, for one, every one knows every one else's business. But I guess I'm kinda spared that. I got my own room while my sisters share one, and Mary Jane's always complaining about Celie taking her clothes or snoring--just stuff like that. We're pretty close, I guess." She smiled rather blandly. Shiri didn't mention how her sisters' attitudes toward her were quite similar and very, very negative. She didn't remember a conversation that didn't end in her red hair getting pulled. "Technically, I'm the youngest, but Celie came into the family after I was born, so I'm sorta the middle sister. My turn for a question!" She blinked and contemplated what else she wanted to know about such an extensive family--besides the catch-all 'EVERYTHING! "What kind of things do you do as a family?"

Keahi listened, silently chewing on his cookie and nodding his head a bit. "Do? Besides fight over who took tha last roll and how someone ate your slice of cake?" The hefty boy shrugged. "Nah much. Wha could a big family do? Mah siblings go from fifteen ta two. Kinda hard ta do anything with everyone."

"Mah ma and da try to do things with us, sometimes. But it seems to always end in a fight." Bickering was one thing that everyone in his family was good at. And they exercised it often. "Mah oldah siblings haf ta help with tha youngah ones. So do I, when I'm home."

"Such responsibility," Shiri observed, near reverence in her words. "They trust you to take care of your brothers and sisters? How old are you?" She herself had never nurtured anything in her life, but she had a reasonable feeling that she would be quite good. Still, it wasn't like her parents had given her a chance to do so. Her mannerisms told that her question wasn't offensive in the slightest, as if questioning his abilities to watch over his siblings, but rather (and only a little) envious of his trust.
