1. What is the Nintendo WiFi Connection?

The Nintendo WiFi Connection is the free online service offered by Nintendo that allows users to connect and play together using WiFi enabled games, in this case, Animal Crossing Wild World.

2. How do I access the Nintendo WiFi Connection?

There are two ways of doing this.

A. You need a some form of Wireless Internet at home.

You'll need one of two devices: A Wireless Router or a WiFi USB Adapter.

A wireless router is a device that connects to your modem (the source of your home Internet connection) and transmits a signal allowing the Nintendo DS (and other devices such as computers and laptops) to connect wirelessly to the internet.

If you do not have a wireless router, your only other option is to invest in a WiFi USB Adapter. A WiFi USB Adapter is a small device that connects into one of your computer's USB ports. The adapter will emit a signal similar to that of a wireless router that your Nintendo DS can receive.

Nintendo had an official WiFi USB adapter, but it is discontinued (I think). Plus, it didn't work with my computer. scream

I used a 3rd party WiFi USB adapter until I got a wireless router. It's called WiFi Max for Nintendo DS.

B. You need to access a WiFi Hotspot.

Quote:
A hotspot is a venue that offers Wi-Fi access. The public can use a laptop, WiFi phone, or other suitable portable device to access the Internet.

Hotspots are often found at restaurants, train stations, airports, libraries, hotels, hospitals, coffee shops, bookstores, fuel stations, department stores, supermarkets and other public places. Many universities and schools have wireless networks in their campus.

Not all hotspots are free of charge.

In the United States, Nintendo made some sort of agreement with McDonald's, allowing for Nintendo DS users to use the Nintendo WiFi Connection at McDonald's across the country. (Unfortunately, you had to be in the building in order to receive the signal, so you'd probably have to buy something to get away with it.) This agreement may no longer be in effect.

Anyway, if you are at a place that has some form of free wireless internet, you should be able to use it to connect to the Nintendo WiFi Connection with your Nintendo DS.

3. I have wireless internet, but I can't connect to the Nintendo WiFi Connection!

Possibilities:

A. Your wireless router is using a form of protection not supported by the Nintendo DS.

Wireless routers contain options for protection. This protection limits who can access it, in order to prevent people from mooching off of your Internet connection.

Your router might not be utilizing such protection, but if it is, there are two types of security codes: WPA and WEP. WPA is more secure, but you cannot connect your Nintendo DS to the Internet if you use WPA security. If your router uses WEP security, you'll need to enter the WEP code to access the Internet.

A WEP code is a series of numbers and letters used for security when setting up your router. Devices that use your router to connect to the internet must enter this WEP code to do so. Your Nintendo DS is the same.

If you do not know your WEP code, you need to ask whoever set up your router for the code or have them remove the WEP protection.

B. Your router is not compatible with the Nintendo DS.

This is, unfortunately, a possibility.

C. You are too far away from the router.

The Nintendo DS isn't very good at picking up the signal from a distance.

D. I'm receiving an Error Code! What do I do?

If you're receiving an Error Code, enter it here (left side of the page), and it should be able to tell you what your problem is.

4. Okay, but how do I get online with Animal Crossing Wild World?!

Once you're sure you can connect to the Internet using your Nintendo DS, turn on Animal Crossing, and head to the Gate in the northern part of town.

Inside the Gate, there are two dogs. Talk to the one on the right: Copper. Ask about your Friend Code. You will momentarily connect to the Internet. If you successfully connect, Copper will tell you your Friend Code. You can check your Friend Code in the menu.

Once you have your Friend Code, you can exchange it with other players. You need to exchange your character name, your Animal Crossing town name, and your Friend Code with friends. (You'll have to manually enter their information. You can connect if you enter their name or town name wrong, but the Friend Code must be absolutely correct.)

Once you have someone on your Friend List, you can talk to Copper and ask him to open your gates to accept visitors, close the gates (if you've opened them), and choose to visit a friend.

In order to have visitors, your friends must also be online and your gates must be open. In order to visit a friend's town, they must be online with their gates open.

You and your friend(s) must be on each other's Friend Lists in order to visit one another online.
