Hello all, and welcome to So you want to Break into Comics? A Review, Tip Guild. I hope you've enjoyed yourself thus far, and I hope you get great critiques on anything you submit. There are many of us who would almost kill to become the next big thing in the world of comics, and all would settle for just having a small impact. Everyone wants to be the next Grant Morrison, Alan Moore or Warren Ellis; the next Jim Lee, George Perez, Frank Cho or Bruce Timm. But everyone would be happy with being the next Anderson Gabrych, Gail Simone or Fabian Nicieza; with being the next Josh Middleton, Michael Churchill, or Geoff Barrow. (All this is, of course, unless you're d. morris, in which case you'd rather be Jamie Hernandez, and other people who I've never heard of. My indie cred only applies in the musical field. <3 d. morris.) And those of us here would love to help you along your path to replacing Geoff Johns and Chris Claremont. Hell, so long as we don't help you become the next Rob Liefeld, we're happy just to help.

So anyway, it's time you got to know those of us helping you along this path. We'll start, I suppose, with me.

I'm Aidan Glissane, just Aidan for short. No, it's not my real name. It's a pseudonym I developed by tracing my real last name closer to its roots and then adding a first name that I've always found rather pretty. I'm currently enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as an English major with a specialization in Creative Writing. I have every intention of writing for a magazine of some sort while working on fictional works, though I'll probably end up over my head teaching high school somewhere. I take spelling and grammar seriously (I learned to read and write a year before most of my peers, and by the time I was in the third grade, I was correcting my teacher's grammar.) My grammar is far from perfect, so I'm not mean about it. But I strongly recommend running anything you plan to submit through a basic spelling and grammar check before sending it my way. I also deal a lot with story construction--pacing, dialogue, the way action and dialogue are mixed, etc.

It may help you to know some of the things I enjoy personally. While aping another's writing or art style is never a good idea, this might help you figure out what things I might pick out as very good or very bad.

My favourite author is Leo Tolstoy. My favourite book is Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. I read Nietzsche and Freud for fun. I grew up as part of the Buffy generation--Joss Whedon has probably made more impact on my life than anyone else, save for Shirley Manson. Musically, Trent Reznor (NIN), Shirley Manson (Garbage), and Courtney Love (Hole) are what you'll find most often in my rotating list of bands, often accompanied by various indie, Russian and German groups. My current favourite ongoing comic is Birds of Prey, and Chuck Dixon is, in my opinion, the best guy for character development I've ever read.

So there, now you know stuff about me, both pertinent and incredibly unimportant to your goals. Hopefully you'll be able to predict some of my comments, which will help you considerably along the way.

One last note, and then I'll let the next Crew member go ahead. Don't just try to impress any of us. We won't give you a better critique if we happen to like you. Were I to post something in this thread, I'd want Zieg and co. to judge me just like they would everyone else. Give us your best work and we'll judge it fairly.

Oh, and seriously: Don't become the next Liefeld.

I've been the sucker in charge of Boot to the head Studios since late 1999. I've been doing independent comics for years. When it comes to getting you name out, I've seen or performed most of the tricks. I know what publishers look for in a submission. I know what makes a good porfolio. And i know how to kiss up like a champ.

I have a degree in English with a concentration in creative writing. I'm a mostly self taught artist. My favorite writer is Grag Rucka.

The spandex books are fun, but have been done to death. I want something original.

hey ya'll. i think i may be the only critiquer that doesn't want to work in comics. i'd like to do fashion design. i'm, not here to be reviewed though. i'll mostly focus on the things i know best, anatomy and to a lesser degree, whether or not the costume is being done right. not does it suck or not (because i do realize my opinion isn't everyone's), but are you completely ignoring physics when you dress your characters. drama is one thing, ignoring gravity is another.

anyhow, you can call me neko, or faythe if you'd rather, i'll answer ot just about anything, it's the result of having four sisters and a mother who can't keep us straight. i'm currently hoping to miraculously find the funds to make my way to the Art Institute of Dallas for their fashion design program, but until i find a way to make that happen, i'll help others get closer to where they'd like to be. my specialty here will be anatomy, as stated previously. my father was a chiropractor for a long time, so growing up i played with model skeletons and read anatomy books when i was bored and stuck at the office for a day. if it were a language, i'd be fluent. i also know clothes, with my fashion interests, so i'll say a little there if it's needed.

comics-wise, my favourite penciller is Ale Garza, inker would be Jesse Delperdang.. i like a lot of writers and i don't think i have a favourite. my current pull list is batgirl. just batgirl. and i'll also read whatever zieg gets for himself. i prefer dc to marvel, but i'll give anything a shot once. if the first 3 or 4 issues i read aren't to my liking, i'll proably never try the series again.

otherwise, my tastes include Phantom of the Opera, the Princess Bride, and Les Miserables as favourite books. i also like classic children's literature and faery tales. musically, i like most foreign music and showtunes. i love muscals. heart i don't really watch tv, but my favourite movies are comedies.. the dumber and girlier, the better, generally speaking. my all time favourites include the Princess Bride, and Romy and Michele's High School Reunion.

on another note. i'm not in the habit of capitalizing much of anything. if that really annoys anyone, like to the point of nervous twitching, i can try to do better, it's just how i work. X.x

Nope, Neko. I have no desire, really, to work in comics. It would be nice, but the short stories I write are infinitely better than the few plays I've done. My writing style just doesn't translate well into mediums requiring a script.

Gooooooooood morning Vietnaaaaaaaaam. I always wanted to say that.

So I'm 21 and trying madly to get into art college so that I can become a subversive writer and artist who's primary weapon of choice for corrupting youth and adult alike will be the Comic Book. Believe it or not, I don't want to be the next Ellis, Moore, or Gaiman, I want to be me. surprised Maybe more later.

I know what you meant, but some creators do end up with the label of the new whoever. I have too many influences for anyone to comfortably crucify me to just one. I mean if I had to describe my writing in terms of my precessors it would be the social conscience of Warren Ellis, the seething misanthropy of Jhonen Vasquez, the esoteria of Brian K Vaughan, and the revolutionary agenda of Alan Moore. That is to say that they're the creators I identify with the most in those various categories.

Hello, people. The name's Marc_Spector. Well...at least it is here on gaia. The real name's Adam and I don't mind if you choose to refer to me by my real name. That being said, let's get down to what I do here in this guild.

I'm one of the many reviewer's here in the guild! (oh god, who'da thunk it)! But all joking aside, though I'll be able to do very general reviews, my specialty is actually animation. And though cartooning and animation are very closely interwoven, you'll often find that when I review your work, I'll make references and comparisons to different cartoons and pilots more often than I will to comics and the like.

That being said, when I review your work, I'll review Everything, from story line to inking quality and all the stuff in between, and help you come up with a few tips as to how to make your story better.

Aside from that, I'll also put up tips and tricks as to how to break into the field. Often times, there are nifty little things that animators use to get jobs that would also benefit cartoonists, and vice versa. And having been around people in numerous fields of art in the last few years, I'll help open your eyes to other occupational possibilities and tools you can use. You'll see me post those at a later time.

Also, three very specific things about me.
1. PM/email me. I'm cool with it...but if you know that I don't know you that well, please put something in your topic header like "I'm from so-and-so" Then I'll be like, "Good, this isn't the online Jehova Coalition. Now I don't have to delete this potentially intellegent email/pm"

2. I'm very busy not only working on various cartooning and animation projects, but also doing various oddjobs, and thus don't always have access to a computer with internet browsers sweatdrop so if you want to hear from me specifically, please, please, please be patient! I do have a life (disgruntled and frustrating, as it may be) outside of gaia and can't always tend to your needs immediately. so just stay cool. I'll get to you. I promise. wink

3. I've...very specified tastes. Not to say I'm not ecclectic...I am. What I mean is that my definitions of good and bad (particularly with film and television) are very strongly defined. So if I say something that offends you concerning these things artistically...well, you're just gonna have to take it, cause let's face it: some of those things that inspire you/ that you like, they probably suck. like Stargate: SG1. And no, I'm not going to take that back. Chances are (though I'll sound like I'm bragging) I've (along with the other reviewers here) had more training in these fields than you. It's just the truth.

But I'm hoping you're smart, so I'm sure you realise that. After all, why else would you be here to get your work reviewed? Don't take it as me being mean. Some people just b***h after getting their work reviewed and hearing what they don't want to hear. But as Ziegfried said in the intro to the guild, sometimes the reviews are harsh. This is just meant moreso as a little reminder, particularly when I review your work.

Other than that, I guess I'm cool. I get along fairly well with most people. And, like many of the reviewer's here, I'm struggling with money for college. However, unlike most of the reviewer's thus far, I've actually completed roughly a year and a half in the fields I've been pursuing. I just need a more permament source of money right now. SO if you you live in New York City and know of a place that's hiring, please let me know! domokun

Finally, though, once again, I will review everything, a little tip of advice off the bat: Though he's busy, I HIGHLY recommend Trick Question for editting. He's a great writer...and that's probably putting it lightly. well that's it from me. tata!

Greetings! My name is Kreestuh (not really, but anyway). I am an aspiring comic artist, obviously, and I joined this guild in order to improve my style and learn more about comic making as an industry. Maybe even hand out the occasional critique...

I've not read many comics/mangas... which, of course, could be a problem, but I fear I'm a rather picky reader. >< I do read a few webcomics such as No Rest for the Wicked and CTRL ALT DEL. In terms of published work, the only manga I've ever seen that I enjoyed alot (not just moderately) was Full Metal Alchemist. I'd love to hear about other comics and mangas people find good though. ^^

I also never intended to be a comic artist, but I feel that I've been led that way. (I actually wanted to be either a writer/traditional artist/designer).

Thanks for everything, and I hope I enjoy this guild! ^_^
