Broken Wings Need Mending

Alex kicked pathetically at a dirt clot that dared to block his path across the walkway. Lately, he hadn't been feeling quite himself. Well, he was still the bratty anti-social butterfly he always was but even more so. It was starting to even irritate him. Ever since his brother left.

With that distasteful thought, the little boy chucked the stupid clot across the walkway and into a squabble of bushes, shaking out what few occupants it contained. A small bird ran--well, stumbled--through the grass and fell little head first into the ground, its wigs flapping furiously.

His own misery was quickly forgotten as he trotted over to the strange bird and squatted down. What the heck was wrong with it? He couldn't have kicked that piece of dirt that hard. He hoped that by coming close the bird would simply fly off, but all it did was make him beat his little wings harder.

"Hang on--Hey! Calm down, now!" Sasha scolded the little bird as he scooped it up in his hands. It was a little robin, he could feel it's heart pounding against his hands. "Hmmm...." Alexander mumbled openly as he looked around for anyone to help it. He didn't really know where the doctor's office was. He rose from the ground and started towards the closest building he could find, keeping his grey-brown eyes peeled for anyone else.

It'd been a while since she'd been able to take a walk on her own, and she was relishing it. The days spent in the hospital had left a terrible crick her her back, and she still couldn't move very well, as the burns there were just finishing their cycle of scabbing. Nevertheless, Alex (of the female variety) was enjoying the warm sun on her skin, clad in her normal get-up of a tank top and jeans. It was heavenly in comparison to the hospital ward and that god-awful gown.

Her peaceful reverie was broken as she caught something out of the corner of her eye, glancing over to catch sight of an unfamiliar student running around, clasping his hands. She frowned a bit, wondering if he was hurt or carrying something he shouldn't be; the expression was wiped away into a simple smile, trying not to jump to conclusions. It was a new and difficult thing for her.

Alex paused where she was, a short distance from the entrance to the Science building, cocking her head to the side. "Hey," she called out, dark eyebrows lifting, "you okay?"

"Ah--!" Alex started his trot over to the young woman, keeping his hands firmly closed so the bird couldn't fall out. "Uhmm..." He paused in front of her, looking down at his hands as he slowly eased them apart, the young critter piping its head out and peeping pathetically.

"It... wouldn't fly away, it just kept flapping its wings. I didn't know where the doctor was around here so, I was just... looking for someone to help. I dunno what to do..." It flapped it wings vehemently, blowing Sasha's dark hair back from his face. Ugh, he hoped the thing didn't have any diseases.

The woman's brows lofted a little as the boy explained his plight, leaning down to observe the frantic animal. Her eyes slid over both wings keenly, seeing no damage - ah, there. Near the base of the wing was a wicked looking thorn, which seemed to be pinching a muscle. How unlucky! Nodding, Alex motioned for the youth to follow, holding the door open for him. "Come on, we'll help him out. Keep holding him the way you are, with your thumbs just like that - he wont peck you that way."

Alex calmly walked down the hallway glancing to the boy every so often to make sure he'd be okay. "No doctor is necessary," she continued. "I'm certain we don't have a vet on the grounds anyway." Subconsciously, she rested a hand on the youth's shoulder, looking up and down the hallway as if searching for something or someone. Arriving at an unmarked door, she pushed it open. "Here," she entered, propping the door open while grabbing at a towel on the coat rack behind it.

Moving to the desk, she swept the paperwork to the side in a careless motion, putting the towel in its place. "Put him here, and just lift the side of the towel if he moves towards the edge, okay?"

"Ah--" Peck? Alexander looked down at the bird and didn't feel so safe with it in his hands. Getting mauled by a bird was not high on his list today; primarily moping was. He held the little robin a bit more firmly so it couldn't get him. Nodding to the woman, he followed her into the science building. He was starting to really dislike this place, and his sluggish stride clearly showed his discomfort.

The little boy wanted to interject, but he kept his mouth shut as Alex continued. He didn't seem to mind the maternal hand that fell to his shoulder, which surprised Sasha as he usually got catty about being touched when he was in a mood. Probably because she was a girl and had no need to throw any weight or dominance around.

He shuffled behind her, entering her little office and trying his best not to snoop around the room. "Ah, okay..." Minding all the papers that now crowded the floor, he placed the critter on the towel and held up the sides to keep him fenced in as it were. It flapped frantically until its energy was spent, his chest puffing in and out in its exertion. Poor thing.

"... ...." He couldn't keep it to himself anymore. "Are--you sure you can--I mean wouldn't a doctor just be easier? What can we do?" He barely got through his classes for human anatomy, let alone going out on his own to learn anything about a bird.

Alex glanced over to the boy, uncertain if he was serious or not. Her expression betrayed her thoughts, a mixture of amusement and bewilderment on her face. With a quiet snort, Alex went to the side of her office, kneeling and opening a cupboard to search for something. "We can rely on ourselves," she replied stoically, half buried in the wooden confines. "It's not something we can't handle with a little common sense and some patience--ah hah!"

She emerged triumphantly with a first aid kit in her hands, pushing herself up and moving towards the desk where the boy and patient awaited. "If you're bitten by a snake in the wilderness, are you gonna -- tsk, there we go," she flipped open the latch, turning her vibrant eyes to the youth. "Are you going to wander around for a doctor and die or suck out the poison? It might be unpleasant at times, but you have to take things in your own hands. Here, look."

The woman leaned over the exhausted robin, pointing a fair distance away towards the injured wing. "See how he holds that one funny? There's a nasty thorn I saw when he was fluttering. It may be scary because he's a wild animal, but I promise this is less traumatizing for all parties involved." If human children thought needles were bad, how would a small, wild beast feel restrained in a room that was heavy of medicine and dust with several people around it, using needles and drugs, so much for so little when it wasn't all that big to begin with...?

A small shudder took her shoulders; sometimes she had a hard time seperating wild beasts from herself. Awaiting an answer, she busied herself with searching through the first aid kit, eyes shifting between the boy's soft features and the task at hand.

Sasha was pretty sure he would be the one wandering around the desert aimlessly until he died from the poison or dehydration or attacked by wild desert animals or something. This lady probably thought he was a pathetic pot of flesh. She reminded him of his brother. She was very strong and confident.

Taking his eyes off the bird, the little Russian looked up at the young lady. "What's your name?"

Fishing out a pair of tweasers and a cotton ball, the woman looked down to the earnest face of the youth, smiling kindly. All this panic and grown up talk and they hadn't even introduced themselves! "I'm Alex," she replied warmly, "I work with Greg - erm, Professor Larine in the physical training department." She might never get used to calling that man by such a title; the only title she'd ever known him by was one he didn't carry anymore, and it was hard enough to remember to call him 'Greg' to begin with...

Resting on her elbows so she could peer over the bird, not yet moving anything towards it, she turned her bright green eyes onto the boy. "How about you? I don't think I've seen you in this area before." He was a cute little thing, but she really did need to stop treating the boys like...well, 'cute little things' and more like budding men. It was ridiculously hard to do when they looked like this one, though.

Sasha couldn't help but burst out with a laugh like a breighing donkey. "My name's Alex too. But you can call me Sasha..." He smiled openly, keeping hold of the towel so the bird couldn't flail away.

"Well I'm... pretty new. And I stay around the uhmm.... the magic department..." And a light turned on above him. "I remember you! from--that night..." He bit his tongue. That had been rude. That night was probably something no one wanted to talk about again. Averting his eyes to the floor, he wiggled his feet back and forth in his shoes. "S-So what do you want me to do?"

The laugh surprised her, earning a crooked grin and lifted eyebrows. She hadn't been expecting something so loud from the quiet boy, but she was living proof that looks weren't everything. "A girl named Alex and a boy named Sasha, what is the world coming to?" she joked happily, patting him lightly on the back since they couldn't very well shake hands. "Nice to meetcha!"

Her gaze turned back onto the bird, observing which angle to best approach it from when the boy mentioned something about night time. It took her a moment to shift her attention from saving birds to remembering just what night he was referring to, but it wasn't difficult. Alex gave a lackidaisical shrug and smile as if to say 'no harm done.' It would be more difficult to ruffle the woman than mentioning her own antics. She did the deed; she knew well what he meant.

Returning to the task at hand, she pointed to his thumb with the tweasers. "Hold his wing open, right here at the joint, with your thumb, but make sure you keep your hand under the towel." She used her other hand to point at where the wing bent for flight. "We don't want to touch him anymore than we have to. You don't have to hold tight, this will be over really fast, I promise. You can even close your eyes and count to five if you want." Alex smiled brightly, not in the least bit making fun of the boy; she'd had to tell full grown adults the same thing for less savory reasons, and the comfort of those one was working with was paramount.

"Nice to meet you too..." He replied meekly, turning his face away with a sudden timidness. His eyes came to narrow on the bird as a utensil was thrust at him. "Hold it?" What if it started to flap or bite? Ew! He couldn't hold on to it! But when she finished, he looked up at her with a stubborn pout.

"No! I can do it! It's... just a bird..." He wouldn't shy away. Sasha wouldn't let a girl outmacho him, not this time! He put his hand under the towel and waited for Alex's signal. He slowly crept toward the wing and firmly, but gently pulled it back hesitantly, trying not to whine as it beat its other wing frantically, crying gently. He hoped this would be over quickly .

Alex smiled gently, nodding. "You know, animals supposedly can sense our emotions and react to them. Don't be afraid, and our little guy wont be, either." Aligning the metal tweasers, she watched the beating with a keen and calculating gaze. "There you go, hold it just like that--"

She wouldn't give Sasha much time to react. The metal item in her hand arched forward, grasping the thorn and pulling it out cleanly at the same angle it had gone in. The offending prickler was dropped on the towel, the tweasers then grasping the cotton ball she had pulled out before and dabbing near the feathers. Alex stood and moved back from the bird, content when there was barely a spot of red on it. The effort had taken less than five seconds total.

"All done!" she informed the student gleefully, putting the items aside. "But don't let go! We gotta let him back out into the sky, and make sure there isn't any real damage. You game?" The Italian patted the boy's back encouragingly. "Good job, Sasha."

"Really?" That was kinda weird, though it didn't help. It seemed to make him more nervous. If it was true, the bird was probably freaking out... oops.

The little boy watched her with wincing eyes as she came closer. It looked like she was going to spear the poor bird, but she pulled out the thorn as he promised. He was glad he wasn't the one on that job, he probably poke it in the throat or something. Ugh.

Sasha's hands clutched the frantic bird a bit more firmly as it tried with all its might to squirm away. "Ahh okay!" Pulling the the bundle against his chest, he smiled anxiously at Alex. "Thanks... Let's go outside..." He didn't want to sit and squeeze the poor bird to death, not after all this woman's help.

Really, the kid was just too sweet. With a pleased smile, Alex moved the medical supplies onto the counter by her desk and motioned towards the door. "He seems pretty adamant about getting away, so I think he'll be just fine. It's good you found him when you did. You spared him a good deal of pain."

She held the door opening, ushering the teen out and falling into step next to him as they walked down the hallway they had traversed just moments ago. It amused her how situations could change so swiftly.

Sasha slowly turned to follow Alex through the the door, making sure not to jostle or bump the bird into anything. The bird chirped pleasantly beside him, its usual frantic attitude sated for now.

Well, so far this day had been quite unconventional, but he was grateful. It had been a bad week and this little misadventure had been fun and he needed that distraction. And he met a friend out of it. Well a teacher friend. Or at least a good person, which ever. Alexander would keep to a few things she had told him. He wanted to become a stronger person, especially now when he was on his own. He couldn't just rely on his big brother to make it better anymore.

"Sh-should I just let him go right here...?" They were outside the building on the stone steps that lead back in.
