What do you guys use for soap? I am talking about bath, body, cleaning and laundry and general use?

Laundry: Dr. Bronner's peppermint castile soap, 20 mule team borax and (though I am starting to stop using this unless in extreme cases) Hi-lex bleach (I might just switch to using apple cider vinegar).

Body: Dr. Bronners can be used for this too. Also I have some 'Just Soap' Citrus blend that I bought from a small vendor. It is really good. Hair, I have some peppermint shampoo that I use. (I cant remember the name of it at this time.)

General cleaning: I mostly use essential oils for regular cleaning. Several drops of lavendar oil and tea tree oil in a gallon of water work well for floors and counters. Vinegar and water work for windows.

I am thinking that I might try and make my own soap though and I am searching for some resources. I might try that instructables website that I have mentioned before for candles.

Yep, I've made my own soap for years. The best book I've ever found is "The Soapmaker's Companion" by Susan Miller Cavitch. She gets into the chemistry of all the different fats and oils, and you can really learn a lot! She has included a couple of basic recipes for skin cream and lip balm, too. Once you get the chemistry down, you can really have some fun.

I would love to make my own soap, but I find myself lacking time gonk

(This from a gal sitting in her PJ's two hours after waking up; I'm also lazy stressed )

Some day...

Personal use: For now I use Veganu soap, but when combined with warm water lately it has started irritating my neck and chest sad It has one or two products that aren't great for your skin.. But its more natural than anything else in our house stressed

Laundry: I either use a cup of baking soda or two tablespoons of EcoH from EcoQuest. I hope to someday get a Laundry Pure machine from that company.. It charges your water with silver ions and hydro peroxides (still not sure what those are or if they're related to hydrogen peroxide..) so your clothes get clean without soap or hot water and the silver keeps killing germs on your clothes for about a month.

Cleaning: Vinegar and herbs ^^ Cinnamon makes mah floor smell great, and peppermint has good antibacterial purposes. Steep both in a big pot of water and pour in some vinegar and that's what I clean most floors and windows with. For really dirty floors or glass I sometimes add some EcoH.

And I love that instructables website whee Thanks again for directing me to it whee

For my body I use scrubs and soaps from Lush, which is a handmade bath & beauty store.

For clothes I like arm & hammer non-scented detergent. Not that great but it's effective and better than some of the other brands. (at least I think so)

I've never gotten to making my own soap. There's something about working with caustic chemicals that's a little unnerving. I'd be more interested in finding other ways to get clean than making soap, like body scrubs and the like.

I can't imagine you being unnerved by a little lye---you cook! Just combine it with the water outside and don't splash it, no big deal. As for scrubs, the big suppliers on Ebay have everything you could dream of, including recipes.

Ya know! Arm&Hammer needs to state on their box that you can use their baking soda for laundry. I didn't know if I remembered correctly if you can use it on your clothes or how much and I so wanted to use it on my towels today.

Should have read this earlier! Heh.

I use Hi-lex bleach for toilet bowl cleaner, BUT... Denture tablets are awesome for getting out toilet bowl stains too, so if you have some of those old denture tablets around, use them!

The rest of the bathroom, I kinda cheat and use scrubbing bubbles. smile heh. If anyone has any better / cheaper ideas, let me know.

Oh BTW, I have gotten into hand washing some of my clothes. I just use a plastic wash basin. And to dry it, I have a clothes drying rack. I find doing that work is much more satisfying.

I use lemon glycerine soap.
Glycerine soap is good for sensative skin and doesn't make your skin dry.
The lemon is good because it wakes me up in the mornin' and I'm not allergic to the scent.

I get a lot of my soap, and all of my skin care products from rocky mountain soap company (www.rockymountainsoap.com if you're interested). The company is located in Alberta, so being from Saskatchewan it only takes 3-5 days for the stuff to be delivered to me. And I don't feel guilty about carbon emissions from travel distance because buying a product from a neighboring province is much more environmentally friendly than buying a brand name product made god knows where.

Everything is hand made and 100% natural. I've had eczema since I was a kid and I've never realy found anything that works that great. But I disocovered their pumpkin patch soap, and my eczema doesn't bother me anymore, even when it gets to -50 in the winter here.

Does that smell good? My eczema bothers me in those temperatures, too, but I'd like to avoid nasty smelling soaps.

I've made my first batch of homemade soap. A milk and honey castile soap!
It's been curing, 3 weeks today.
Yippy!
I think you need to have patience, but it was fun making it.
