She was only feeling slightly better, curled up in a semi fetal position atop of a sunbaked rock. It was getting close to dusk, and sadly there was still no sign of Bato. She'd been seperated from him for two days now, and wondered why she was bothering to hold out hope if she knew he didn't care. They never really did did they?
Geez... she never realized she sounded so pessimistic...
The female simply sighed softly and uncurled, stretching a bit to lay more on her stomach than her paws as she stared out at the sea of high grasses and rocks scattered about the Southlands.

Juhudi moved at a brisk trot, his ears swivling in all directions, his nose twitching as he sniffed the air. It was getting late and the predators would be coming out now, this was the favorite time to hunt after all.
He had been foolish to let himself be caught out in the open so late, but then he seemed to have been foolish a lot lately. He silently reprimanded himself and swore to his late mother to better follow the lessons she had taught him.
The grass rustled with his movements as he trotted, searching for a place to take shelter for the night.
He suddenly froze in his tracks as his nose picked up the scent of another nearby. His ears perked and twitched to full attention listening to every sound. His pace slowed and he moved cautiously.

Sauda saw the grass begin to sway and part, approaching her. Whatever it was couldn't be very large, but if it was a baby bore she might end up facing off with another angry mum. Her shoulder stung a bit with memories of the injury she'd gotten on that hunt with Bato, but she ignored it with a simple flinch.
Soon, her guest appeared before her, seeming cautious in his stride. It looked like a baby pride cat!
Sauda was curious, despite her depression. She'd never seen a little pride cat before, only the two big ones. One had been very friendly and the other was a brute of a bully, giving her the three scratches on her left haunch. This one looked harmless though looks could also be decieving.
She purred, giving off her location.
"You shouldn't be alone this close to dark..."

Juhudi's ears twitched, instantly turning toward the source of the sound and his body instinctively shifted into a defensive position, his fur standing on end to make himself appear bigger than he was.
He looked up at the cheetah as she spoke and his posture relaxed, but he remained alert, unwilling to let his guard down. He sat and looked at her with a mixture of curiosity and caution. She wasn't nearly as big as his mother had been, but she was still bigger than him and that meant potential danger.
"I know, that's why I was looking for shelter. Don't suppose you know of anyplace do you?"

Sauda regarded the little one with orange fruit colored eyes, tail tip thumping the rock behind her. He seemed collected for his age, but definitely still young enough to be vulnerable. Despite herself she found herself feeling the urge to give a helping paw again. What harm could come of helping him and keeping guard for the night? She could be gone by morning before she caused him any trouble.
"I can't say that I do but, they say there's safety in numbers, right?"
She glanced about the area from her vantage point, not spotting any immediate danger.
"There's bound to be an old burrow somewhere if you look hard enough, I saw a grumpy Ratel wandering around here."

Juhudi's ear flicked as if tickled by a light breeze as he watched the cheetah silently for a moment. She seemed to be kind, which may have seemed odd since she had no obligation to help him. Perhaps she'd had a kind mother as he had?
"You're a cheetah aren't you?"
His tone was curious. His mother had taught him about other animals and how to recognize them, but he had never encountered a cheetah before.
His eyes flicked to her tail for a moment, the movement appealing to his kittenish sense of play. But it was only a momentary distraction and his eyes quickly focused on hers again, his own tail flicking in a growing nervousness at the darkening sky.

Sauda looked to the little male and nodded a confirmation, eyes kind still.
"Mmhmm... and you're a pride cat, right? A liiii~ioon."
She playfully drawled out the last word as she stretched, rump raising into the air as she bowed forward.
With a yawn and then a shake of her head Sauda leapt nimbly off of her perch and bounded a gentle circle around Juhundi, then in the direction she'd seen that cranky Ratel. She was feeling slightly more aimable, no longer feeling so utterly useless. For now she'd forgotten her worries, why dwell?
Sauda glanced back over her shoulder and paused. "My name's Sauda, what's yours?"

Juhudi watched her curiously, eyes fixed on her on movements. She was graceful and beautiful, much more slender than the compartively bulky lions. His mother had told him that cheetahs fast runners, this one certainly looked it.
He nodded and stood, his tail flicking behind him.
"Yep. My name's Juhudi, nice to meet you Sauda."
He struggled a bit with the pronouciation, but got it mostly right. He smiled with a sort of akward charm that only a cub could have and trotted after her.
"You think a..." he tried to remember what she had called it "r..atel burrow will be big enough?"
He tried in vain to surpress a yawn. It was getting very late, and it had been a long day.

Sauda smiled and took a bit of sway in her step, circling back around to the lion's side so that he and she could walk more side by side.
"It'll be be big enough for you, and if it's not we'll just keep looking! Just like that!" She reassured, "What about food, are you hungry Juhudi?"
She played the pronunciation off of her tongue with an easy quip, liking the sound of the name as she often did with new faces she met.

Juhudi looked up at Sauda and smiled. She was very kind and he found himself feeling a bit reassured to be with her. He missed his mother a lot, especially at night, and it was a comfort to be around another rather than alone as he usually was lately.
The pressing need to find shelter for the night had pushed thoughts of food from his mind, but now that she mentioned it, he was a bit hungry. He had managed to survive by scavenging on carcasses and catching the occational small lizard or rodent, but it had been a couple days since he had last eaten. He felt his stomach rumble at the thought of food.
"I'm a little hungry."
His eyes darted about, searching for the burrow Sauda had mentioned as well as for the movement of any unwarry critters.

Sauda had never encountered one so much younger than she before. She wasn't really acting motherly, and not quite sisterly, well, very friendly summed it up just fine. His company was prooving to be subdued but quite plesant. You know, in a way it almost WAS like having a kid brother around, though she'd only just met him.
There was once again a bit of a bounce in her step for a few instances, the scent of the Ratel fading in. Good, she could probably make a meal out of the burrow inhabitant for her friend's sake. Sauda grinned. "You got a favorite, Juhudi?"

(( ah, there she is. xD pretty cheetah? ))
Juhudi looked puzzled for a moment. Favorite? He'd never thought of what his favorite food might be. He had always just eaten whatever was on hand. He thought for a moment, then shook his head.
"I'm not picky, I can eat whatever."
He grinned and picked up his pace a bit for a few steps to keep up.

((What's wrong Thal?))
Sauda had a light laugh, not-picky was good, she wasn't picky herself either, too much of a people pleaser to have developed her own personal taste for any particular meat. Not-picky also meant that she could have much better luck retrieving a meal, possibly that irritable honey badger even.
They were nearing a tree. Once reaching it he'd find Sauda stopping abruptly in her tracks. The adolescent turned her eyes to the lion cub with a twinkle of mischief.
"Wait here Juhudi, I'll be back with food soon and I'll take you to that den I told you about. Okay?"
She smiled, barely waiting for confirmation before turning and trotting off out of sight.

The cub's ears flicked, looking at the cheetah curiously, not sure what was so funny. After a moment he shrugged and decided it wasn't important, contenting himself to follow her.
He kept up as best he could, walking besided her, picking up his pace to a trot to keep up every few paces before dropping back to a walk again.
When he reached the tree he stopped as she had. He tried to follow her gaze and sniffed at the air, ears flicking. He wondered what she had seen, and his cub senses tried in vain to see as well.
"kay."
He watched her move off before flopping down under the tree to wait.

A bit of time went by with mostly silence, save for the nightly symphony that the insects and birds provided. Not long from the point that Sauda left Juhudi by the tree, however, did a great bit of ruckus stir up. There were angry rodent-like noises and a few growls before a dying squeal filled the air, followed by more silence.
Sauda returned half carrying, half dragging a dirty black looking ratel in her jaws proudly. Only after reaching the cub did she rest her jaws and neck, settling the kill down for him to help himself from while she stretched off the work of the hunt with a little grunt.
"Dig in!"

Juhudi sat quietly under the tree while he waited. His tail flicking back and forth as he idlly pawed at a small stone on the ground in front of him. He also looked up at the stars, silently wondering if his mother was watching him from somewhere up there.
His ears twitched, instantly swiveling toward the sound of the hunt. It wasn't a foreign sound, after all his mother had been a hunter as well, but it was startling nonetheless as it broke through the quiet night.
His head turned toward the source of the sound and he watched quietly, not daring to make a sound until Sauda came into view. At the sight of the meat she carried, his stomach instantly began to growl and he jumped to his feet, nearly bounding toward her.
He barely managed to get out a 'thank you' before he was on the carcass, his head lowered as he sank his small teeth in the creature and took a large bite. He grinned happily as he chewed, swallowed, then took another large bite. It was good to eat fresh meat again, and he devoured it ravenously.
Tahja Estes
How long had it been since he had a real meal? Sauda had to wonder.
The cheetah watched him eat for a few moments before lying down semi-curled for comfort. She was beginning to feel like she could settle down soon herself, and with that calming mindset the past day's recent events were coming back to haunt her. Don't dwell....
"You like it?" She questioned, watching him curiously with orange eyes from where she lay on her side.

Juhudi looked up and nodded enthusiasticlly, his mouth too full to speak and his appetite pushing him too much to empty it.
The cub was certainly not a clean eater, at least not tonight. His white fur was rapidly turning red, muzzle, paws, and chest thoroughly stained. But there would be time to clean up later, and filling his belly was his priority.
He ate until he was full, until he couldn't eat anymore. When he was done there wasn't much left. He had been very hungry, much hungier than he had thought.
Finally he looked up and grinned, his belly full he was content. He licked his lips and started to clean off his paws as best he could. he really had made quite a mess.
Tahja Estes
"All done?" She grinned, not minding the first silent answer at all. Her tail twitched behind her, the end of it anyway. She rose lazily to her paws and padded over, nudging him and trying to push him onto his back so that she could help with the cleaning, a grin in place. It was more an excuse to tickle him than it was to bathe, in the end.

He looked up, letting his paw fall to the ground again, small pink tounge darting past his lips as he tried to lick what he could from his muzzle.
"Uh-huh, that was tastey."
He smiled at her as he started to lift his paw again, but was instead startled to find himself rolling onto his back with a light thud. He squired, batting at her lightly with his paws.
"Hey! I can do that myself. Ack! Stop it, that tickles!"
He giggled, trying to roll onto his side to escape, his paws twitching as he tried to wriggle free.

Sauda laughed as well, pulling back if only to dodge his playful swats, then mussing up the fur atop his head with one of her own paws. He was a cute little boy, reminding her of her brother, whom she hadn't seen for some months and months now.
She smiled, sunny-brown eyes warm with a friendly bit of life, and let the cub get back to his own paws. The two then set off at a playful pace towards the shelter she'd promised, breaking the silence of the night with childish banter and laughter trailing after them as they went. Who knew when the next time they met would be, but at least the two of them knew now that sometimes it was okay to rely on the kindness of strangers, and to let fate intervene in their lives.
