Joruri took a slow breath he really could not believe all that had happened in the last few days. He needed to be punished. He should never be so bold with his mistress. He was still worried about what to say to Idhril's parents.

He walked hand in hand with Idhril not saying much as they walked back towards the cave. It was there that they would start to think of how and where to build their home. They should start on it soon.

Idhril walked slowly beside Joruri, trying not to slow him down too much as she continued to wring water out of her long hair with her free hand. She was wearing a fresh and clean dress now, having thrown out her other one, which was no longer of any use.

As they approached the cave where they had been staying, she smiled despite herself. She loved being here with Joruri ... she really did. She knew he thought that what they were doing was wrong, that she deserved better than him, but she loved him - it was that simple.

Unbeknownst to either of them, their cave was no longer empty ... sitting against the wall, next to a folded blanket, was a little girl. She was sitting comfortably, legs folded politely, hands clasped in her lap, her large gold and indigo eyes fixed on the entrance of the cave. She had long black hair - as long as Idhril's, falling past her ankles, with bangs like Joruri's - and pale skin, like Joruri. Her clothes were ... well, in a word, interesting. Indigo vest, pale pale blue blouse and loose pants, with gold trim. Her ears were longer than a human's, more like an elf's - but rather than being pointed, they were rounded off, as if they had not grown quite long enough to be pointed.

She was, quite obviously, a mixture of the elf and the angel. Anyone who knew them would know that on sight.

Joruri moved into the cave entrance. "Idhril wait in the sun...Joruri will get a brush and help her with her hair..." he said watching the way his mistress fussed over her long hair. He stopped though at the entrance. He had the feeling they were not alone.

His indigo eyes scanned the darkness of the cave trying to adjust to the lack of sun in the walls. His body shifted slightly in front of Idhril's as he looked. When his eyes caught hold of something too small to be a 'threat' his hand dropped Idhril and his gem froze.

There was a surprise, in both sense of the word sitting on or near Idhril's blanket. "Mistress...."

Idhril smiled and nodded, and as Joruri headed off towards the cave, she used both of her hands to wring her hair out. It always held so much water ...

But then Joruri called out to her, and his tone was one she had not heard before. Her curiosity piqued, and she wondered what had happened as she turned and moved to join him once more.

"Are you all right?" she asked him softly, stepping up beside him.

As Joruri's silhouette appeared against the brightness of the sky beyond the cave, the little girl's eyes began to glow softly. The corners of her mouth curled upwards in a smile, and she rose slowly to her feet, carefully, as if she were testing out her legs, almost like a fawn standing on its own for the first time.

Joruri now could see the flow of the long black hair that fascinated him on another agai fascinated him as if feel down when the surprise stood. He had one day planned to go to a goddess and ask for a surprise for Idhril...but that was only going to happen when Idhril wanted a child...not a few days after she had become a teen.

He didn't know what to do...The surprise almost seemed as if it was waiting for them. But why would there be a surprise? He took a slow breath..."Does mistress....have a younger sister here?"

Idhril frowned softly and reached out to take Joruri's hand in her own once more.

"Idhril, not mistress," she reminded him gently. "And no ... I don't have any younger sisters who are from here ..."

She followed his gaze to see what he was looking at and trailed off, eyes wide, speechless, when she saw the little girl who looked so much like her ... and yet ...

The little girl giggled softly and stepped slowly towards Joruri and Idhril, the gold of her mixed eyes glowing brightly.

"Papa?" she said in a hopeful tone. "Mama?"

Idhril just stared.

Joruri watched almost in horror as the small surprise moved towards them. And knew his heart would have stopped, had he had one, when it in such a beautiful soft voice called them her parents.

He was nervous at the thought of being near something so small and memories of killing young things filled his mind. As much as he wanted to go and help her along in her way to them he feared if he touched the young surprise he would kill it.

He shook his head slowly, "No..Joruri is not your papa....but Idhril and Joruri will help find your mother and father....little one." he said softly in a weak voice. "What is your name little one?" Surely her parents had named her and that could be helpful when trying to find the surprise's family.

Though he could not help but wonder at that rich onyx hair so like the hair of the one he loved. And the clothes seemed to be fancy enough to be from his mistress' family.

Idhril blinked in surprise when the little girl called her and Joruri her parents, but when she thought about it ... it did make a twisted sort of sense. Had she not immediately thought that the girl looked like both of them? Did Joruri not mistake her for Idhril's own younger sister?

She reached out and put one hand on Joruri's shoulder, stepping closer so that she was standing right against him.

"My love," she whispered softly, "is this not the place where we made our love? And is a child not usually the result of such a union?"

Could this child not be theirs? After all, children - in this world - came from vases ...

But didn't that mean that there should be a vase here?

The girl looked completely lost at Joruri's suggestion that he and Idhril were not her parents. Her ears actually drooped a bit, the light fading from her eyes, and her lower lip trembled as if she were about to cry.

"But ... but ... but I don't have a name!" she sniffled, wiping her nose with the back of her hand. "Mama and Papa have to give me a name!"

And she looked up at Joruri and Idhril once more, her eyes shining now with tears instead of joy.

Then she hesitated, then asked, in a very small, scared voice, "Don't you ... want me?"

Joruri jumped at the touch of Idhril's hand on his naked shoulder. Her nearness to him did not bring him comfort only made him feel more closed in. "We did make love here Idhril....but Joruri can not breed....even in Second standard Joruri can not breed."

He hated seeing someone cry he had seen too much of it in the past. He turned his eyes from the surprise unable to look at it. It is not that he did not want to give Idhril a child. He would have loved to have been able to do that. But she was so young...and he knew he never could. This could not be real...but Idhril saw the surprise too.

He was so bad for Idhril that he could even ruin something so pure as a surprise in the likeness of his beloved. "Yes your mother and father will give you a name..."

Idhril's brow furrowed sadly as Joruri turned away from the child. Shouldn't they at least try to help her, even if she wasn't their own?

The girl sniffled and rubbed her nose again.

"But ... you're my Mama and Papa," she mumbled, wiping a single tear from her cheek, "so you're going to name me, right?"

Her voice was so sad, so forlorn, and so wistful, that Idhril's heart broke for her. She took Joruri in her arms and held him close.

"Come," she whispered, "we should at least try talking with her ... find out exactly what happened ... and why she is here ..."

If the girl really was their child, she would love nothing more than to have her as a daughter. But on the off-chance she really did belong to someone else ... well, she knew they couldn't keep her then.

Joruri wanted to run but he could never disobey any word from Idrhil's lips. He nods and allowed Idhril to lead them toward the young surprise. He sat down next to her and looked at her, "How do you know that Joruri and Idhril are your father and mother?" He asked gently watching the beautiful surprise.

He hated to see the likeness of Idhril so sadden but he did not want her thinking falsely.

Idhril sat with Joruri and smoothed out her dress, tucking her wet hair behind her long pointed ears. She sat close to him so that she could still hold his hand, because despite her own words, she was still nervous about the whole idea.

The girl sniffled again and brushed her bangs out of her eyes.

"Because," she mumbled sadly, wiping her eyes with the back of her wrist, "the goddess said so when I came out of my vase."

She hiccupped once and blushed hotly, no longer daring to look at either Joruri or Idhril. She was certain she must have done something wrong ... they didn't want her ... they didn't want to believe she was theirs ... maybe it was best if she just left and went somewhere else anyways.

Joruri's eyes widened again, "The goddess....a...a goddess was here?" He looked at Idhril. Goddesses never made mistakes like that, and if this little surprise was told that she was to be the daughter of them, then...the goddesses had blessed them with a child....so very soon.

"Where is your vase little one?" His voice was the gentle sing-song like one that would would think a puppet would have. IT was far calmer and warmer than he felt.

He knew he would hate himself if this was thier daughter and she felt as unwanted as he always did.

The little girl sniffled once more and pointed further back into the cave, where, just beyond the light's reach, there was a small reflection off something tall and thin.

"Over there," she hiccuped, rubbing her eyes. She was a little startled at the sudden change in her papa's voice ... did she do something?

Idhril's golden eyes glowed softly in the darkness. If the goddess said that they were her parents, then her parents they must be. She squeezed Joruri's hand and smiled warmly at him, then turned back to the little girl.

"Come sit with us," she invited her, her voice soft and tender. "You don't have to be afraid ... or sad ... we were just surprised to see you, is all ..."

The girl sniffled again and looked up at Idhril and Joruri, hope flickering in her indigo and golden eyes.

"Then ... you don't not want me?" she asked, her tone hopeful.
