So- Tierkreis has been out for a while now. Your thoughts?
I love it! A great installment in the series.
A few problems here and there, but overall it's good.
  It's alright.
I didn't like it all that much, actually.
I hated it! An absolute waste of an entry.
  I haven't played it yet! :(

A new bond, the story begins.

BASIC, GENERAL GAME INFORMATION

-Last updated October 21st-

According to Due Fiumi, reporting from a Nintendo Power article:

- The game is set in a parallel universe to the Suikoden world thus explored. As such, there are no returning characters (including Viki and Jeane) and no returning locations. The universe in the game is composed of an infinate number of parelel worlds. People and monsters can cross between these parallel worlds via portals called Gateways. These worlds appear to be converging.

- The Order of the One True Way (formerly known as the One Way Society) are a "fatalistic society guided by the belief that destiny is predetermined and unchangeable." The hero and his party run into this group quite early on while investigating the convergence of the worlds. The hero and his party find themselves at the forefront of a resistance movement against this group.

- The game's key words are the number 12 and star-zodiac.

- No true runes will be featured within the game.

- You must now buy new weapons, rather than upgrading them.

- The 108 Stars of Destiny will come from many different places in the Tierkreis world, each bringing their own cultural designs and visual motifs. Various types of ethnic and creature groups will also appear, similar to previous titles. Doctors, Innkeepers, scholars, and blacksmiths are mentioned as some of the types of Stars of Destiny you can recruit.

- A mysterious book known as the Shining Legacy bestows new-found strength and abilities called the Mark of the Stars on certain people. The Hero and his company are confirmed to run into this mysterious book early in the game.

- The resurrection of the 104 Stars of Destiny previously reported will not be included in the final game; producer Masayuki Saruta says it was considered at the beginning of planning for Tierkreis, but was later dropped.

- All game progression is mission-based, whether story-driven or not. The player is rewarded for completing these missions.

- Monsters do not drop money after they are defeated.

- A lot of inspiration for the game's world-view and characters was derived from a region off the Mediterranean Coast.

- There will be no duels, and no true strategy battles. There will be multi-party skirmishes taking place during major battle campaigns instead.

- Short, Medium, and Long range weapons will be in the game. The player can also change the formation of the front and back row.

- In addition to the four battle characters, a support character can be added to the party, similar to Suikoden III and V.

- The first major mission in the game will be fighting Laggarts, a type of particularly rowdy beasts.

- The vast majority of the game's key scenes will be voiced.

CHARACTER INFORMATION

-Updated as Information Becomes Available-

User ImageAsuado (アスアド)
General of the Janam Magic Empire's 2nd Sorcerer Corps, Asuado is a serious young man with a strong sense of justice who respects loyalty and truth.

User ImageBelfrayd (ベルフレイド)
The President of a rapidly growing group, known as the One Way Society, Belfrayd is an imposing and charismatic man. While the aim of his society is unknown, it is said to be locked in a political struggle with the unconfirmed nation led by Danash VIII.

User Image Claudehild
The female swordsman leader of the "Swordsmen of the Night" that, in recent years, she has made famous. They fight against society that has become dependent on the Janam Magic Empire.

User ImageDanash VIII (ダナシュ8世)
The ruler of a as-yet-unnamed nation. He is locked in a political struggle, and perhaps war, with the society led by Belfrayd. It appears his palace is destroyed at some point in the game. Whether he survives is unknown.

User Image Diadora
She serves as librarian for the library in "Shirube Tower," which is the One Way Society's base and a symbolic structure of Sainasu.

User ImageDirk (ディルク) Voice: Konishi Katsuyuki
Leader of the Citro Village Vigilante Corps., he’s charged with the duty of watching after the young ones. He’s popular among the youth, and the others call him “older brother,” and look up to him. He teaches Hero, Jale, and the others how to fight. He is very chivalrous.

User ImageFangirl
A girl who fights using a fan. She is shown in a battle screenshot performing a unite attack with Yula with both characters striking an opponent in opposite directions simultaneously.

User ImageFanboy
A boy (?) who is dressed similarly to the fan girl mentioned above, likely marking them as a team. He may not actually use a fan, the name is only to reference his connection to his female counterpart.

User ImageHelmet Wearer
A male character in a helmet who appears in the opening movie. He wears an armour similar to that of soldiers found in several screenshots, likely meaning he is a foot soldier. He kind of looks like he's stepped out of a Dynasty Warriors manga to me.

User ImageJale (ジェイル) Voice: Ryotaro Okiayu
Another member of the Citro Village Vigilante Corps. Taciturn and arrogant, he is very defiant to outsiders. However, his friends are very important to him and he often follows our Hero.

User ImageHero (げんそう, Genso in some screenshots. ツグ, Tsugu in others) Voice: Takashi Hiroshi
This instalment's hero is a boy. In a remote area, in a small village called Sidro Village, there was a vigilante corps. They exterminated thieves and monsters that attacked the village, improving their talents. He is the optimistic and act-before-you-think type.

User ImageLiu(リウ) Voice: Tetsuya Kakihara
Liu arrived in Citro several years ago, his previous home a mystery. His is close friends with the Hero and his other friends, and serves in the Town Guard even though he's a poor fighter.

User ImageMarica (マリカ) Voice: Sakamoto Maya
She is the daughter of Sidro Village's village chief. She has also been a friend of the main character since childhood. She joined the town guards against her parents' objection. She didn't join the town guards out of some fickle impulse or to keep herself entertained; instead, she takes her duty very seriously.

User ImageMarica Number 2
An enigma of a girl who came through the Gate, which allows travel between the Million Worlds. She looks exactly like Marica and even calls herself as such. She appears to have come to this world looking for something…

User ImageMiine
Miine is stated to be a member of the light infantry associated with an agency within a certain country. This highly ambiguous statement delves little into her background. However, she is also stated to be a genius, holding great confidence in herself and her abilities as well as being somewhat egotistical.

User ImageMisrach (ミズラック)
A tanned man with a small beard who has appeared in battle screenshots. In one of the images, Misrach is shown stating that he comes from Salsaville.

User Image Moana
A member of the Rumble Tumble Tribe, Moana first meets the Hero in the Fortress Ruins in the middle of Flesaria Forest. She runs the Quests in the game, and is also runs a shop.

User Image Mystery Lady
A mysterious woman who appears for a few seconds in the opening movie. She has the appearance of a mage and is likely her role in the game. She reminds me a little of Suikoden III's Sarah and I wouldn't be surprised if this young woman held a similar role in the story.

User Image One King
A mysterious and powerful being who defeats the 108 Stars of Destiny at the beginning of the game. He is likely the cause of the game's plot twist of having to resurrect the Stars of Destiny as well as the "parallel world" twist.

User ImagePoolside Man
Real name unknown. A man resting at the side of a pool in the opening movie. He may not be human, perhaps he is of a demi-human race. Either way, there is no way to tell right now due to the small imagery and dubious video quality.

User ImagePopasu (ポーパス)
Popasu is simply the Japanese name for a porpoise, making this character more than likely a generic member of the new porpoise-based race who reside in the ocean city of Septaflos. It's clothing and equipment seems to be made of coral which sounds uncomfortable but there you go.

User ImageRobert (ロベルト)
A young warrior whose role in the game is unknown, he is a member of the Swordsmen of the Night. He seems pretty clean cut, so he's either on your side or he's the new Troy. It was assumed he was the leader of a group of soldiers but it is likely he works under Claudehild.

User Image Robert’s Cohort
A companion of Robert who appears in the opening movie in the same scene as him. He belongs to the Swordsmen of the Night along with Robert and Claudehild. He has darker hair than the other two members and does not wear a banadana. Unlike the cohort, there is likely no mistaking him for a past character.

User Image Sandman
Real name currently unknown. A lone figure with a staff or some other pole standing alone in the desert. Their gender is unknown as it is nigh impossible to make anything out from the screenshot. It may even be Danash VIII for all I know, although this is unlikely as Danash appears to be a more muscular build.

User Image Shadowy man
A man clad in dark armour with his face hidden, who stands with his back turned by a spring in the opening movie. Reading Lady and Spring Girl are in the same scene but it is unknown if the three are connected.

User Image Sota
Old dude in a robe whose face is covered up. A bit of a leap in logic here but could Sota be Nagarean? Although not the same colour, his robes carry some slight resemblence to that of Eresh's in Suikoden V.

User ImageSpring Girl
Real name unknown. A girl with long brown hair and white robes who sites by a spring in the opening movie. She also wears a headband. Reading Lady and Shadowy Man are in the same scene but it is unknown if the three are connected. She may be the unnamed character Due Fiumi has labeled "Fan Girl".

User ImageTsauberun
Tsauberun came from a country somewhere to investigate the One Way Society as well as the strength of their opposition. The reason for his reconnaissance is unknown but his name also appears to be an alias, adding even more mystery to this person.

User ImageUnite Male 1
A male character shown in battle screenshots participating in a unite attack with Asuado and another unknown male. He wears clothing similar to Asuado and may possibly also be from Salsaville.

User ImageUnite Male 2
A male character shown in battle screenshots participating in a unite attack with Asuado and another unknown male. He wears clothing similar to Asuado and may possibly also be from Salsaville. His hair is lighter than his companion's.

User ImageUnknown Mage
An unnamed character who has appeared only in battle screenshots. Even her being a mage is unconfirmed and is based on her high MP compared to her HP.

User ImageVazurof
A hero of the Rigid Folk Tribe, who supports the One Way Society. He is a military man whose disposition steers him towards logical thought. It appears that his views will lead him to conflicting with the Hero and his party at least once, although he may dislike having to fight them.

User ImageYula (ユラ)
Stated to be a polite, young woman from "the north", Yula is considered a self-styled travelling master of the martial arts. Her speciality in battle is wielding two swords, one in each hand.

新しい「絆」の物語が始まる。
A new bond, the story begins.

SETTING

The game is set in the Kingdom of Salsaville. However, the hero's home village appears to be called Sidro Village. Other locations include; the town of Saad, Freseria Forest, the Marcina Plains, Septaflos (the home of the porpoise-based race) and El Kalaal, the palace of a nation (not Salsaville) ruled by Danash VIII.

A shadow society is said to be located to the north, who, led by Belfrayd, are attacking and are engaging in political intrigue with Danash VIII's kingdom.

GAMEPLAY

The gameplay takes advantage of the Nintendo DS's touch screen. The top screen shows character status information. HP, MP, status effects and the like. Meanwhile, you can use the DS stylus to enter commands in battle on the touch screen.

Other observations include: The battle system is four person battle system, like Suikoden IV. As such, it is a traditional RPG, not a strategy RPG like Suikoden Tactics. Unite/Combo attacks are confirmed to be in.

Looking at the status screen to the left (click it for a larger image) it appears traditional Suikoden MP is OUT, to be replaced with standard MP numbers comparable to HP. Like in Final Fantasy VII, for example (and 90% of every RPG ever).

新しい「絆」の物語が始まる。
A new bond, the story begins.

PLOT

The game OPENS with the defeat of the 108 Stars of Destiny at the hands of the game's villain with only four survivors (not including the hero). The quest involves reassembling the 108 Stars of Destiny.

In the movie scene screenshots it shows the 108 Stars of Destiny in their "final battle" and being decimated by the enemy except for 4 remaining warriors that are still standing. The main character leading the stars in the video looks a lot like the main character, but maybe older and in proper armor. It could well be that the entire game is a flashback leading up to that event, rather than you being an unrelated character after the fact getting drawn into the web of affairs.

A group called the Swordsmen of the Night (or possibly Swordsmen of Hell) are stated to be involved in the game somehow. They are likely the "society" engaging in a struggle against the nation of Danash VIII.

SALSATOWN.

Alright...

I'm so hoping Konami decides to bring this to the U.S. Even if they don't, I'll still import it, even thought I won't know what the ******** is going on.

But all the hype aside, this could be a bad sign for us. Suikoden moving to the handhelds... could spell the end of the franchise as we know it. Keep your fingers crossed for some hope for the real Suikoden VI.

In any case, looks like a ******** Tales game. neutral

I'm not saying it will definitely end it, but I don't think it's a good sign that a new Suikoden game is moving to the DS, since there's no confirmed Suikoden VI. Granted, this could just be me being fatalistic, but the Suikoden franchise isn't exactly booming with business. Since Suikoden games have only been on consoles (minus Card Stories, which sucked), this whole DS thing seems kind of ominous to me.

I'm pretty pessimistic though, but I still have hope. This could just be a filler game for Konami so they can appease the fans while they concoct the REAL Suikoden VI, but if there's no news for Suikoden VI (or anything else) by the time ST (and so I have dubbed it) is released, I would start worrying.

In any case, don't let my personal fears and mumblings get to you.

While it worries me that the game is moving to the DS, I don't think the DS really marks the end of a franchise. On one hand is the gaming system most people have an access to. PS3 is... well... doing whatever the PS3 is doing, and the XBOX isn't exactly popular in Japan from what I hear.

So maybe the DS, is the safest best at the moment for a gaming platform.

That aside, I don't have any next gen console at the moment, so I'm glad it's on a DS. I was worried I wouldn't be able to play the next Suikoden game (I'm heartbroken enough that I can't play Vesperia until I get my 360 at the end of the year, I don't want to not be able to play Suikoden on top of that. I might as well drown myself in alcohol to wash away my sorrow).

On the game itself... I like the sound of it. It seems like there going in a different direction then the other games and it has caught my interest. Kind of miss the girly looking Hero that V gave us, but Jail looks interesting. I could just like his name though.
