About Draven

______________________

Without really thinking things through, Taelence had ended up with a sort of body guard. Or maybe a better term would have been 'Knight In Shining Armor'. At least, that's what she'd called Draven, jokingly of course.

Surprisingly, he hadn't seemed to be joking at all.

More than anything Taelence was intrigued by Draven. She didn't understand what he wanted from her, a single mother with two boys. Her best friend was the boys' other mother and oh by the way, she just happened to be dating Taelence's Foster Brother, Ariston. To say that weird things happened in her family would have been an understatement. Which was probably why she was so interested in Draven in the first place. He was a mystery that had presented itself in front of her and now she wanted to figure it out.

So here she sat, under the big oak by the lake, waiting for him to come and 'escort' her to the strawberry patches. Chryses and Kallos had talked of nothing but fresh strawberry sauce to put over the homemade ice cream Arashi, Teles, and the rest of that side of the family had made. Crimson had caught a whiff of what they were plotting and had decided to send over the some of the sauce in exchange for some of the ice cream. The sauce, however, needed to be made first.

Taelence sighed and looked to the road, wondering if Draven was on his way.

"If he's late, I'll have to start out without him," she mused to herself, not much liking the idea. After all the only way she'd figure out Draven was to spend time with him.

"Sorry, I'm late aren' I?" Draven's shouting started as soon as he spotted Tae's figure. He'd obviously rushed to get here on time, his hair a little messier than usual but still in good form. He paused to breathe as soon as he reached her, saying with a slight whine, "Someone thought it would be funny to 'adjust' the time on the clock, so I woke up late... sorry." Why the guys at home chose to pick on him, he didn't know. Even Claudia, who he protected daily from Lestat, decided that putting peanut butter in his hair gel would be hilarious. Only she hadn't known about the forty or so other containers hidden beneath his bed, should they sabotage one... He shook his head, letting a small smile shine across his face, "Ready to go?"

Taelence smiled slightly as Draven dashed as fast as he could to where she stood. He looked like he'd just tumbled out of bed, literally. But it gave him a tousled, sexy look that Taelence couldn't deny wasn't appealing to her. She looked him up and down, weighing his appearance now and the way he normally looked.

Yes, she mused to herself. I like him better when he looks a mess. He's not perfect, so his appearance should reflect that imperfection.

She waved off his apology.

"It's no problem, really" she said, a smile in her eyes and voice. "I was more worried that something had happened to you. And I was right, apparently. Maybe locking your door at night would be a good idea?"

She reached down at her feet and picked up the tiny wicker basket. She hooked it to the belt she wore, so that it wouldn't hinder her as she walked, and looked back at him.

"I'm definitely ready. As per orders of my sons, we are to bring as many strawberries back to the house as physically possible," she held a paw to her muzzle and giggled. "A near impossible feat. I'm actually more worried about how I'm going to protect the strawberries when I get home. I love my boys, but they have the stickiest fingers I've ever seen. They'll get their paws into just about anything. And that anything usually ends up in their stomachs."

She grinned. If Draven was going to be hanging around he deserved to know the truth about her. Fair warned is forewarned after all.

The fact that Tae had children didn't seem to phase Draven in the least. In fact, he seemed chipper as he quickly stated, "We'll have to get as many as we can then. I'm sure we could find a decent place to hide the plucked berries from their little reaches." He pulled out a little bag of his own, one that was strong as a basket, but easy to keep under locks and away from paws. He took a few steps forward before he added with a smile, "I'll bet they ate all the wrong things when they didn't know any better, huh?" He chuckled softly; he hated to admit it, but he loved little kids, no matter how spoiled they were or how secluded in their own little worlds.

Taelence smiled, glad that Draven seemed to accept and even like the fact that she had children. This boded well; if nothing else, she could have Chryses and Kallos around Draven without things getting uncomfortable. Not that it would have ultimately mattered. When it came down to crunch time, Chyrses and Kallos came first and always would. That's what it meant to be a mother. Still, it was nice to know that Draven understood.

She wondered how well he'd take her next test.

She laughed at his remark and nodded.

"Well they are kits after all," she smiled as she remembered all the trouble they could get into. "And boys, no offense. A double slam of trouble, if you ask me. And nothing they ate hurt them. Though letting Chyrses near the Draino Gel might not have been the best of ideas. I'm pretty sure that's why Kallos's coloring is a little bleached out."

Taelence eyed Draven, wondering if he'd realize that she was kidding and that she'd never actually let anything happen to either of the boys. She started walking down the path that would lead them to the strawberry fields.

"Still they're not bad kids. Even though they weren't raised in the same house together. Kallos actually lives with his other Mother, Teles, and Chyrses lives with me," she studied Draven's face, looking for a reaction. "I'm Bisexual."

"It's been hard on them, but considering the circumstances of how they came to us and everything afterwards, they turned out okay. Remind me to tell you that story someday," she smiled, remembering a time in her not so distant past. "There are times I know when they want to strangle each other, but that's siblings for you."

Draven calmly listened to everything she had to say, smiling once or twice as she talked about her two boys. He could tell she wasn't serious about the Draino Gel, emitting a soft chuckle. He only really listened after she mentioned her sexuality, "So you're Bi? That makes two of us then!" He grinned childishly, only to add with a pout, "I'm afraid that I've had no children though. They must be amazing..." There was a slight far away glint in his eyes, but he quickly shook it off as he studied their surroundings, "We should hurry with these berries, else they might start to gnaw on the carpet.."

Taelence smiled to herself. Draven had passed the second test. Homophones were not good in her book. Better, though, that they were both in the same boat. Just one more thing they had in common with each other.

She was liking this arrangement more and more.

"Love is love," she said simply. But she let out a very loud guffaw when he talked about how wonderful her boys must be.

"If you feel like trading sometime, just let me know," she said, her mouth twisted into a smirk. "Kid's aren't bad, really. So long as you find the right person to have them with."

Here, her face wrinkled in pain. Not the look that she'd had when she'd told Draven about Teles. No, this came from remembering...him.

"It wouldn't surprise me if they did. You should see the furniture legs from their teething stage." She shook her head, a sad smile on her face.

She laughed a bit and looked around.

They'd finally entered the strawberry fields and she began to peek through the low bushes trying to find the perfect ones. Plucking one, she stuck it into the basket and looked for another.

"We've talked enough about me for the moment. Tell me about yourself," she said, truly interested.

He noted her pained look, but chose not to speak in case it was too painful. He'd no bad experiences yet, but he was sure that they wouldn't be too hard to come by.
He'd listened to her patiently until she asked about him, a small smile tweaking the corner of his mouth as he said, "There isn't really much to tell, other than I try not to argue with anyone if it's avoidable. I'm probably the most sane out of my household, and I do my best to prevent broken bones that seem to always happen anyway..." He shook his head, the thought of Claudia being alone with that guy too much to handle, knowing his personality.
He quickly shook his head and walked towards the nearest bush, finding a few ripe berries and quickly scooping them off the bushel, putting them in his little basket as he scoped the next few bushes.

Draven didn't ask about...Cho...and Taelence didn't elaborate. As much as she bugged people to open up to her, sometimes she ate her own words and refused to talk about certain things. She'd tell Draven, sometime.

Taelence frowned. Her household was crazy, but not dangerous. The most that could happen was your ears might get sore from Chryses riding on your back and using your ears as reigns, or whiplash from Rose's sharp tongue. But it sounded like foxes got hurt, often, in Draven's house.

She was at his side, forgetting picking strawberries for the moment. She rested her paw on his shoulder, her eyes full of worry and fear.

"Nothing happens to you though, right?" she asked, her voice a little higher. She mentally shook her head. Taelence cared about other's and if they were ok...but she had this feeling that her words had suddenly gone beyond friendship at that moment. She blinked a couple of times and the odd feeling left. But she still had Draven by the shoulder. And she still cared.

"I don't like the sound of your house. Where's your Caretaker? Doesn't she do something to stop it?"

Draven blinked, staring at her a moment beore he flushed involuntarily. "Yeah, she's there.. but she can't control them... And I've only had to dodge a land mine once or twice before the clown got tired of me, so I'm not in any danger.." He smiled and chuckled softly, "Forget something...?" He gestured to the fields of bushes they'd been told to go through, picking up a berry and swiftly placing it in her basket.

Taelence's next words came out as a squeak.

"Land mines?" she blinked, harder. "Ah..."

She suddenly remembered where she was. She bent down and picked another strawberry, placing it in her basket. She looked at him again, one eyebrow raised.

"Can I just say, that my house has officially been opened to you?" too late she realized that her offer could be taken another way, and her cheeks reddened. "Ah, you know. If you need a quite place for a while. The Goddess knows we've got more rooms than we know what to do with."

She busied herself in the opposite direction of Draven. Inside her head, she silently bonked herself.

Smooth Taelence, real smooth. Since when have we suddenly become a wet behind the ears newly grown adult, hmm? She forced herself into her task.

Maybe letting him meet Chryses and Kallos wouldn't be such a bad thing. Especially Chryses. If Draven can handle Chrys...well then I'll really know he can handle anyone.

It still upset her beyond belief that someone would try and blow Draven up. For fun apparently. It made her blood boil. Draven was, without a doubt, one of the nicest males she'd ever met. (She didn't count Ariston as they were foster siblings and besides he was crushing on Teles anyways). She didn't understand people whom hurt other's for kicks.

She peered over her shoulder, watching him as he worked.

I think I like him way too much for my own good, she mused.

Draven smiled softly, "I think I'd be missed if I left.. especially since I'd be leaving Cheza with those guys..." he sighed softly, "But if the time comes I need it, I'll take your offer whole-heartedly." He wasn't paying attention to his work, and the next thing he knew, he slipped int a little rut hidden by the bushes and tumbled a few feet down an incline. By the time he stood up, there were leaves and twigs sticking to random places on his body, with a berry squished on his cheek. He quickly got up and started laughing, pulling a few twigs from his hair, "I think it's more dangerous out here than at home!"
After he'd managed to remove the most annoying of the leaves, he went back to picking berries, knowing he didn't want to keep the younger ones waiting for them too long, else they really might eat the carpet.

Taelence watched as Draven slipped down a tiny incline. She rushed over, careful of the edge and peered over. The sight she saw was too funny. She fell over herself, but from laughter instead of taking a tumble.

"Oh! Oh dear....!" was all she could get out before she dissolved into hysterics again. When she had herself in check, she started down the slope carefully. She reached Draven just as he started to pick strawberries again. She pulled a couple more twigs and leaves from his clothing and, with smile, she flicked the berry from his cheek.

"A little clumsy sometimes, are we?" she asked teasingly, and popped the strawberry into her mouth. Her eyes widened in surprise. "Those are really good. We'll have to find a really good hiding spot. Chryses and Kallos will treat those like candy."

Taelence pulled a small water bottle and a cloth out of her basket. Wetting the cloth with the water, she reached out and cleaned off the berry juice staining Draven's cheek. Her touch was extremely gentle and her eyes kind.

"You wouldn't believe how many times I've had to clean up a Chryses and or Kallos mess. I've just got used to bringing a cloth and water with me everywhere," she explained as wrung out the cloth and stored both items away.

She moved away from him and began to pick again. Her basket was almost full.

"Feel like coming home with me?" she asked. "After this of course. You can help me make the strawberry sauce. And meet the boys."

Draven couldn't help but make a soft pout as he was laughed at. At least she wasn't one of those types who tried to remain emotionless, like those that surrounded him on a daily basis, and thinking of that made him smile to himself.
He spoke up as he was talked to, "Only when I'm distracted. Normally I'm well balanced..." He looked over the berries with a grin and added, "These sly berries, hiding themselves down a hill to avoid capture..."
His attention was back on her as she mentioned her home, a smile crossing his face, "Sure. I'll get to see what kinds of messes they get into for myself..." He picked the a rather large berry and his eyes bulged, "How the-?" He murmured, noting that it was rather abnormally huge. Shrugging it off, he quickly placed it in his basket, knowing it would be great for a cake, not that he could make a cake. Well, he could, but that was his secret.

Taelence smiled. That pout was too cute.

"Apparently they like you though," she remarked teasingly. "After all, you're not as hurt as you could have been. This patch must have caught your fall."

She spread her paw around to indicate the area around them. Draven had landed in a very good strawberry bush patch. She went among the bushes, picking up and discarding the bad ones, keeping the good ones. And there were honestly more good ones than bad. It wasn't long until her basket was full to the brim.

"Done!" she cried out. "I couldn't fit another strawberry in my basket even it I squeezed all the juice out of the ones already in there."

She looked around for Draven. She watched him as he finished putting the last of his strawberries in his bag.

She still couldn't figure him out. He was polite and kind, but something was still off. She still didn't understand why he'd made his earlier offer.

Though you could ask yourself the same thing about taking him up on it, a little voice in her mind reminded her.

Because he's interesting. And different. I've never met anyone like him.

"Are you sure you want to come home with me?" she asked, giving him the chance to bail out. "I wasn't kidding when I said my house can get crazy."
