My mother and at least ten of my friends have been attempting to convinse me to pick up Twilight and read it. Apparently it is "the best book in the world" according to many; yet I have heard many people describe it as "over rated" a story with "too simple of a plot to be a series instead of just one book" and many other remarks.

I am at the moment, sitting with the book in my lap with a book mark on page 276 out of 498. It still has not gotten intreguing, in my opinion.

Here are some questions for you:

-Have you read any of the books?
How many?
Why did you start?
What kept you reading or why did you cease to read?
-Did you enjoy it?
What made you decide that you liked it or disliked it?
-What do you think of Meyer;s writing style?
-What are you opinions on the basic plot?

[I do feel silly having our first debate about these books, but it is in mind at the moment and I don't feel like thinking about much else until I finish Twilight. If I put it back down, chances are, I will not pick it back up.]

So far, I am only just over half way through the first book. I picked it up after hearing so much praise for it and being bombarded by friends who would not shut up about how glorious the work is. The true reason for me to keep reading is to get others to shut up and stop telling me to read it, and because since I started it, I now want to find out what happens- on my own terms.

Now comes the part where many of you, I'm sure, would want to flame me. I have not enjoyed Twilight in the slightest. In my opinion, it is a snore, the entire series could have probably been squished into one novel and would have had more interest. I detest Meyer's writing style; she may use words that only one who would be thought to be good with the english language would use, but she writes like a fourteen year old writing semi-good fan fiction. Her sentences are short and choppy, she uses too many commas and too much of the same sentence structure. I still can't clearly picture Edward and Bella in my mind, which is important for a reader to see. She does not use all of the senses to describe scenes, and drags on for too long.

The plot isn't somehting I can truly talk about at the moment because of the fact that I haven't finished the book, but so far, it is quite plane. Too much like a fourteen year old writing good fan fiction. The story line seems to represent Forks, repetitive, boring and slow past the point of aggrivation.

Twilight has been called the "Best book of the decade"- who ever had said that obviously does not read much.

Lisa, would you care to elaborate on your opinions?
I hear that you like them, but why exactly? Just because vampires?
So does that mean that you like it purley for the fact that there are vampires in it, therefore you would like any story with vampires in it?
If not, you need to elaborate so I can understand [like I explained.]

And for the plot question, you misinterpreted what I was asking- I was questioning what you thought of it, not how many other people tried to write a similar story.

well i like the plot cause.... it appeals to me? i guess lol usually i go through books and once in a while one will pop up and i'll love it. for some reason i love this book.

now that the movie is coming out, i look at bella and edward as if they looked exactly like kristen stewart and uhhhh whats his name lol.

i seem to like books having to do with vampires. something in this book just grabbed me and kept my fingers turning pages. it was weird. i can see how people think its bad or horribly or whatever, but personally i loved it.

Merhhhh your not a debater, are you? hehe.
I'm trying to make this interesting!!!! &&I won't stop asking questions until it gets that way!

So you have no clue why you like the book or what you like about Meyer's style of writing and you're not going to defend your side strongly?

Darn...
Thats no fun!

So! #1 What exactly appeals to you, think REALLY hard [is there a message that you like or relate to? do you identify with a character? is it just a simple easy read that you really don't have to think much about?]
#2 Don't you think a good author describes their characters and makes you picture them without the movie? Remember, its not about the movie, its about the book. If it took seeing the movie trailers to picuture Bella and Edward, don't you think the author is recieving a lot of attention for a talent that she obviously does not have?

well uhhhhh im really not a debater hehe

i dunno but when something sweet/happy happens in the book im just like awwwwww ^^ *giddy* and when something sad happens im like *tear* =(

#2 first i believe that in the first book there is description in there. when i first read it i imagined bella and all of them(but you know once you see how the movie characters look, you start to imagine them a little more than what you had in mind)

#1 sometimes i find im like bella, i can be clumsy, so its funny when she gets into really random situations! after each chapter, i seem to go back and turn the book into a film in my mind to better understand it, so im not on overload.

a-hah, Well there is description, but I want more. She writes like a n00b, to be blunt [I can't believe I'm using that word... n00b...].
I wrote better than that when I was 10, Meyer is OBVIOUSLY earning praise that she should not have, people need to rad books worth their time and praise authors that are actually talented.

Ok, so you like the book because there are sweet moments, bitter moments, you can relate to Bella, and it has short chapters that you can think about without going on overload?
Theres no message, nothing that gets you thinking about the world, life, death, theres nothing in it that touches your soul or makes you think "wow, this person is a true artist with words, the words are beautiful", nothing like that?
You obviously don't read much Dx

Hmmm.... were going off subject for a moment-
Tell me what you think of this prologue, it pretty much describes the main character of the first book in detail, and the main characters of the other two books to set it up.

Quote:
Prologue
A young woman was sitting on the ground with her lengthy legs to the side. The grass was young and new, seemingly hiding in the shade from the burning sun. Her long, thick, chocolate brown hair was blowing in the delicately cooling breeze, just floating in the air. Her eyes were shut tight, and her full, black eyelashes stood out against her fair skin from the contrast in color. There was little difference in tone from her skin to her silk wedding dress fit for a princess. The gown had a lacy corset and four foot train straight out of a fairytale. However beautiful this sight may seem, it was quite a dismal one; the young woman was leaning against a tombstone. It was one of many in the ancient graveyard, but this particular cluster that she was near was quite new; they were still level to the ground and able to cast a reflection in their glossy finish. Her heart was beating slowly, she felt as if she was dead. In the black of her shut eyes she imagined the white of hospital walls, where another young girl lay in peril. Although she wept for this girl in a coma, she cried no tears. Just as her mind wandered to this, a black haired girl had shut her eyes to block out her white hospital walls. The girl was curled in a ball in the corner of her locked room. Her hair was frizzy and matted; static caused it to stick to the wall. The straight jacket she was forced into kept her from wiping the tears from her face that she cried for herself as she thought of the young hospitalized woman. She was wishing she was the girl in peril in the medical hospital. She would not be thinking or feeling, having to stare at the burning white walls of the mental hospital. The odd part was, none of these girls had ever met.

I'll tell you in the next post- but what do you think that is like compared to Meyer's writing?

[Please try to use like 3 complete sentences at least!]

umm well i like the descriptions first of all, the way that its about 90% description is amazing, and how detailed it can get. It definitely tops meyers in my opinion cause...uhhh i have no idea, it just captures my attention more. The only thing wrong with it is if the whole book/short story/etc is like that i would have a brain overload. i guess meyers book(s) are much simpler for my mind.

Before I get into this, I feel very fuzzy inside for the wonderful compliment you gave me- I wrote that about a year ago. It's not finished and I can't stay on one story long enough to finish one; if you bug me enough about that one and the other one I had you read in my english class, I might have them finished and on the way to being published before I'm out of high school.

See the entire thing has information given, crazy action scenes all with intense description [with breaks of corse!] and wow factor events and information all wound together. So I was hardly 14 [never mind, I was 14 when I wrote that over a year ago] when I wrote that, while Meyer was in her early to mid thirties when she wrote Twilight which is basically information overload, little discription, overly predictible.
When you look at pure skill and the practice time I have compared to her, she really isn't that great of a writer, and Twilight proves it.

I rest my case.

Heres a link to how much of the story I have written- It's all planned out of what I want it to be, I just have to not be lazy and write it all out.
