[[This RP takes place during the period that all three individuals are FOALS.]]
PostPosted: Sun Aug 10, 2008 5:15 am

They were young, reckless and often gave their father a headache when they were awake and when the weather was cold. Or at least, this was what Moppet had often told the young black colt as he darted in and out of the trees. He couldn't really understand what she was on about, too young to recognise that he slept on warm days...and too young to realise that his father was rather fond of his sleep too. Alas, such was the way of a 'child' - they were never really thoughtful of their parents likes and dislikes. It seemed that every child was born and destined to give their parents' headaches for a least two years.

Not that Penance did it intentionally...but he was good at it.

Nevertheless, he had always been one to be aware of his father's instructions and he had begrudgingly (at points) obeyed them. He had never strayed away from the forest, nor had he gotten into any fights. He hadn't ever shown any disrespect to those around him either. Instead he had been as polite as he could be for a foal and had made his parents proud. Granted he stumbled over his words on occasions but no one was perfect and he apologised the second he realised he'd messed up.

Alas, he had a feeling that today was not one of those days. The mountain air was cool and refreshing, the breezes made him bubble with excitement. For one who loathed the heat, the cold weather brought about the opportunity for the colt to play. He had a renewed sense of energy and positively shivered with the anticipation of discovering the 'treasure' his Grandfather (Cyn) had told him about. Ah, but where was the fun in finding treasure alone...he was always accustomed to having at least one very special playmate around.

His brother.

"Come on!" he cooed, bouncing on the spot as he glanced over his shoulder to try and find where his brother had disappeared off to. "If we do not get there soon someone'll take it!" As if to support this point, Penance could detect the faint scuttle of paws as they rushed off in the direction he had been heading. His brow furrowed at this and a tiny piece of his 'good mood' went with them. Ah, if anyone got to the treasure before he did he would be terribly mad!

His grandfather had declared that it was a msot incredible treasure, one that would prove unforgettable. Admittedly the foal could only recall tiny parts of the story. He could only just remember the directions he had received too, but he was as stubborn as his father and he would find the treasure (first he might add) even if he did get lost for a few hours. It would be a very silly adversary that got in his way and took it first - yessir, because he would sit on them if they did that...and rumoured had he was mighty heavy.

Ah, but with a shake of his tiny rump he continued to watch for any sign of his brother. Glowing eyes darted left and right, waiting expectantly for his pale furred brother to appear. He wagged his tail at this thought, contemplating whether or not it would be appropriate to tackle his brother for making him wait this long.

Newadi’Woyi crept through the dark and cool forest, black hooves only barely disturbing the forest floor, wings tight against her sides so they wouldn’t impair her movement in any manner, bright green eyes wide and searching, red ears swiveling back and forth, straining to catch even the smallest sound. She was walking slowly and carefully, meticulously avoiding any obstacles, without the usual bounce of her exuberance, which her parents would probably have thanked the sprits for back at home, and her sisters would have teased endlessly until she gave up and zipped off after ‘Dihi’s tail or coaxed Adi into the slippery mud. Normally she was an almost endless ball of energy, constantly running from one end of their herdlands to the other, begging her Doda to take her on flying lessons so she could grow up to be a traveler just like him, tugging herself through whatever brambles might be in her way without any thought for what her Etsi would say when she returned home looking like a right disheveled mess, and generally causing ‘Suli great pains as she refused to even consider sitting still. But she was lonely, having no one to play with in this unfamiliar and slightly spooky forest, and she didn’t really have any idea of how to get home. So much for her adventurous plans for the day.

It had started out normally enough: ‘Woyi, Adi, and ‘Dihi had crept away from ‘Suli early in the morning while their older sister was grazing on some very enticing clover, and then had proceeded to run amok for a while, playing chase-the-butterfly and tease-the-youngest-sister (which Adi never liked) and hide-and-go-seek in the bright, dappled forest of their home, not too far from the willow that was the center of their herd and their lives, the willow adorned with both Doda and ‘Suli’s feathers. Their giggles would have been audible to ‘Suli where she grazed by the river, which was probably why their older sister didn’t come after them and attempt to herd them back by her side. Better if she just let them expend their energy doing more productive things than run-circles-around-‘Suli. But Adi and ‘Dihi, being younger, had tired of the games sooner than ‘Woyi, and so when she said she was off to go explore the woods, they had retreated to ‘Suli’s side and the plush grasses that proliferated under the family willow.

Not that she blamed them. It was actually rather chilly in the depths of this thick forest, she was tired from running who knows where, and she would have been perfectly happy to follow her basketmates back to the river and lie down, had adventure not called her. ‘Woyi’s curiosity was nearly insatiable, and she had a hard time resisting its call when something interesting and new caught her eye. What it had been this time was a small deer trail through the forest that she had never noticed before. Where it went she had no idea, but she had hardly been able to contain her excitement when it came to finding out. So she had set off down it, little wings fluttering in excitement at her new find, ears perked and steps full of a new bounce as she contemplated all the new things! she could see and the exploration! that would ensue. Along her way she had turned over any log she had discovered, sending termites and ants running for cover from her inquisitive nose, had stopped for long minutes to watch the antics of squirrels or listen to a particularly beautiful bird song. And eventually the game trail had petered out of existence, leaving her wandering wherever her bright eyes led her, paying no notice to the rapidly thickening trees and the strangeness of the place she now wandered until she stopped, hooves tired, and realized she did not know where she was or how to get home. Etsi and Doda had warned her that the world was not all beautiful and full of sunshine like in their home, but she had yet to experience that, though finding herself in a forest that looked like it might be a very good setting for a scary tale, thick as the trees were, was enough for her to think they might just be right. It wasn’t that her thirst for adventure was being quenched, by any means, it was just that the setting of such an adventure was a little much for a young filly with a far too active imagination who had never met anyone too far from her home. Now it seemed like the shadows of the forest could hide lurking eyes, that every sound she heard was a wolf stalking her. She tried to tell herself that she was just being silly, tried to not flinch at every rustle from further within the trees, but she couldn’t help it, stepping as carefully as if she was trying not to wake a sleeping Kalona.

Not that Kalonas were all bad; they just played the villain in most stories. As long as one wasn’t trying to eat her, ‘Woyi was not all that fearful about meeting one. Maybe they were big and bad and scary looking, but they couldn’t all be like that. And it would be an adventure! She imagined meeting a Kalona that actually was a great friend to all the big, fluffy bunny rabbits that she loved to watch hop through the meadows at home and giggled to herself, imagining a fanged creature with scary bat wings cuddled up to lots of tiny bunnies. Hopefully she would meet one like that, and what a story that would be to tell Adi and ‘Dihi!

Considerably cheered by that image, ‘Woyi wandered with a bit more spring in her step again, green eyes once more vibrant and vivacious, the little filly’s spirits not really dampened by anything. She was a tenacious little one, and as something as simple as being lost wasn’t really anything to worry about. She hadn’t walked that far after all, and her family couldn’t be the only Soquili around here. And she was Tawali’s daughter after all, the daughter of the great wandering Soquili who could always find his way home. If her Doda could do it, so could she. So determined she set out with new vigor, luxuriating in the fact that she was in someplace new. New places were always exciting and fun! At that thought she rustled her wings, prancing a little in place and wagged her fluffy red tail in excitement at the thought of all the good times that new adventures could truly bring.

((By the way - I'm assuming this takes place after Azuell/Woyi meet. So they kind of know each other. ;3 ))

Azuell flicked his tail, ears pricking as he heard his brothers voice break through the air. The little colt lifted his head, taking a mouthful of moss and cool grasses with them, happily chewing on what he considered a post-breakfast snack. The young colt found he took after his brother and father in that he could appreciate a cool day in the woods and he loved to sleep; but the little cream and black legged boy also had a strong love for food!

Oh, to eat was bliss and the little colt couldn't help but pause now and then to graze. What was adventure and excitement without a little snack along the way? He was a growing boy, after all, and therefor needed his energy! Especially if they were going to locate Grandpa Cyn's ultimate treasure! That surely sounded great but it also made his stomach rumble; there was a good chance once they set off on adventure they wouldn't stop to eat and such a thoght wasn't fun for Azuell. So while his brother had taken off posthaste, Azuell had dodged to the side to pick at a few soft greens and clovers.

Penance's patience was well worth a few moments grazing. Slurping up the last of the greens, the blue eyed boy shook out his mane. His ebony brother was sounding more and more impatient and Azuell didn't want to work him up too much. Giving one last forlorn look to the sweet grasses, the little finally turned tail and bounded over to where Penance waited. Leaping out of the brush, head lowered, he made a bee-line straight towards Penance's side. "You called~!?" He laughed, making sure he aimed right for Penance. Though his brother looked to be taller than him, Azuell was petite like his mother but also built like a brick. He was short and could almost be considered stout, but he was also incredibly solid. His affections and rough housing often left the bruises to prove it!

He'd knock Penance over and pin him if he was lucky. Or his golden eyed brother would easily deflect and not tolerate such games. They were on a mission, after all, but as far as Azuell were concerned there was no need to rush or be hasty. The treasure was still going to be there regardless; Cyn hadn't told others about it, had he, so how could anyone else possibly find it? And even if someone did it wouldn't make the trip any less adventurous.

Completley oblivious to the presence of his other friend (he hadn't thought 'Woyi might make it to his woods) the colt couldn't ask for anything more. He had his brother, his best-friend and playmate, and they were soon to be off on a grand adventure! They'd return with treasure and make their family proud, oh yes. And only upon such a return could they feast once again on the yummy grasses and clover.

The tiny filly would have had to walk a considerable distance to reach the forest the twins dwelled in. The Islagiatt territory was immense, containing many families and lands within it that belonged to each. To have reached the forest she would have had to pass through the leader's land and go so far as to approach the deserts! It would have been logical to assume that children (especially adventurous sorts) had no concept of distance but her appearance would be just a little surprising. Not that either twin would mind - if Penance knew his brother well enough (and he did), both would be delighted to see a visitor. After all, it was a well known fact that the lands were usually void of visitors due to the image the twin's father had cultivated over his many years in control.

Alas, regardless of how far she had travelled she would still be forced to walk just a little further before Penance could detect her. Her steps were simply too soft for his ears to pick up and since her wings were feathered even the ruffles weren't as loud as his. Unfortunately, even if she had been considerably louder he probably wouldn't have heard it anyway. No sooner has he called out for his brother than said sibling came darting out from the trees and floored him - for want of a better description. His tackle came at such a surprise that Penance released a shriek of surprise and both foals went tumbling. Ultimately, Azuell was successful in pinning his brother who was albeit dazed from the surprise attack.

Apparently Penance had to work on that 'primal instinct' thing his father and grandpa always spoke of.

"Are you eating again?" Penance enquired increduously as he stared up at his twin. Oddly enough they might have been born at the same time but they couldn't have been more different. Azuell had a completely different colour coat to Penny. Not only that, but Azuell even seemed to be bigger than the winged child. Granted, when they reached adulthood Penance would inherit his father's height and Azuell would not but for the time being... Well, Penance could only take note of how incredibly heavy his brother was at this precise moment in time.

...He needed to cut down on the clovers.

"We just had breakfast!" He pointed out again before giggling and shaking his head. With a quick wriggle and a flutter of his wings he escaped from beneath his brother and clambered to his hooves. Another little shake and he removed the foliage from his coat while eyeing his brother. Apparently the reason he'd taken so long was because he had taken a detour for a snack - why was it that Penance wasn't surprised? He should have known Azuell wouldn't resist all the greenery.

What on earth was he going to do when winter hit and there was none - eat bark?

"And yes I did call, why you always gotta stop for something to eat. For all you know we could've lost our treasure by now!" He chastised.

Though the crimson filly was indeed little she had inherited her father’s great legs for traveling, his wanderlust, the ability to let her hooves simply place themselves where they willed as she gazed about at all the different sights, the miles slowly melting away. Not that she had the stamina of her father yet; that would come later, as she grew older, after many a day spent wandering over grasses and plains, underneath trees and clambering across mountain slopes, her hooves even feeling the hot grains of desert sand underneath them. Not to mention allowing her red-and-purple wings to crisscross the great expanse of sky, familiarizing themselves with the clear air when it was both blue and darkened by clouds. Eventually she would be a wandering soul to rival her father, unable to resist the lure of adventure and with the will and determination to push constantly onward until her goal of exploration had been satisfied.

So yes, she had traveled far for a foal, but the sun had slowly waxed and waned as she walked, and her pace was slow and leisurely, nothing to really get tired over. There were just too many new things to see and experience for her to take a moment of rest. Sure, she had stopped to graze when she had been hungry, had partaken of the delicate and lush forest grasses, had paused to examine a brightly colored butterfly or the antics of a squirrel that thought itself unexamined, had felt no need to rush onward until she caught sight of something new. But interesting things seemed to be quite bountiful in this forest, and so Newadi‘Woyi could hardly find a way to stop roaming. It never crossed the little filly’s mind that she probably wouldn’t be able to return home before it grew dark and her parents started to worry. Her father would think it only the proliferation of his wandering genes, but she was not yet old enough to have placed a feather in the family willow to help her home.

For several long minutes more ‘Woyi walked, feeling the breeze ruffle her feathers and short mane and tail, happily placing her hooves in new territory. She was deep within the forests, the mossy loam was thick and plush beneath her hooves, and the forest was quiet and peaceful.

Or was it?

Someone was calling.

The red filly paused, cocking her head and flicking her ears about, as she heard a surprised shriek from up ahead. At least, it sounded surprised and not fearful to her, but she had not yet traveled much of the world, had not yet been exposed to dangerous things. On every adventure when she had not been just with her sisters she had met new Soquili, each of them interesting and nice. Sure, there were scary things out there, sure there were dark things, evil Soquili, regions of a forest where one would not want to walk alone at any time of day, but ‘Woyi knew nothing of that. All she knew was that it sounded like someone was having fun up ahead, and she wanted to join them.

The brick coloured filly bounded forward without further preamble, not really crashing through the undergrowth, but certainly not doing much to hide her presence in the forest. As she ran, looking more like a rather uncoordinated fawn as her wings managed to get in the way than a foal, she could hear a voice in the direction she was heading, a voice that sounded both amused and foal-ish. ‘Woyi wiggled her tail in excitement at that realization—the realization that she might just be lucky enough to make a new friend today—and romped her way even a little faster in their direction. It was so exciting!

A flash of cream and a flash of black caught the filly’s attention as she approached the place where the two brothers stood. Newadi’Woyi knew no black Soquili—and it was highly unlikely that she was bound to meet someone she knew in this strange forest she had wandered into completely by accident—but the creamy color did look awfully familiar…

And were those horns she saw through a momentary gap in the trees?

Who would have thought that Azuell would be here? How had she ended up in his home?

“Azuell!” ‘Woyi called excitedly as she burst out of the thicker trees, sliding to a stop several feet away from the two foals. “I wouldn’t ‘ave thought I’d see you here!” A smile was quite apparent on the filly’s face as she uttered those words, glad as she most certainly was to see a friend of hers. Dancing on her hooves, the filly darted forward to push at Azuell’s neck with her nose—it wasn’t quite affectionate enough to be called a nuzzle at this age, really more of a friendly bump—and eye the horns that she was still rather jealous of, then quickly stepped back to where she could eye the black colt with interest plain in her bright green eyes.

And that was when she really noticed Penance’s cool wings.

‘Woyi was just a bold filly, and often just introduced herself without thinking—or tended to invade personal space—and that was something that anyone who would be her friend would have to know. She wasn’t necessarily the most cuddly foal out there, but if something interested her, she wanted to touch it. She was just…enthusiastic.

So as soon as Penance’s wings caught her eye, the filly darted forward to poke at them with her nose, just like she had done with Azuell’s horns when she had first met the creamy colt. They were all smooth and leather-like, and where were all the feathers? How did he fly?

“Your wings are all cool and smooth!” she exclaimed, eyes shining, as she stepped back, tail wagging slightly in her excitement. “But you don’t ‘ave feathers. So ‘ow do you fly?” The idea of a Kalona’s wings and this foal just didn’t really connect in ‘Woyi’s mind, and she’d never felt a bat’s wings to know what they were like.

“Is this a friend of yours Azuell?” ‘Woyi asked, turning back to her friend. “ ‘Cuz he has these cool and different things, just like you!” It would never have occurred to the filly that maybe because they were both “cool and different”—what some Soquili might refer to as “mutant”—that perhaps they were related…especially since they were such opposite colors!
