 With their numbers currently as small as they were some of the hunters had been reassigned tasks generally left to the larger warrior males. Patrolling the borders was one of them and that was currently what she found herself doing. It wasn't that she minded, really. Enough hunters had returned that bringing food back was an easy task and if watching the pride lands themselves got her away from Nutter-Nyatia then she was, by far, all for it.
She paused for a moment, ears flickering at the sound of nothingness; no more than grass rustled by the breeze. The season would be shifting soon and things would be changing again... Changing, yet staying the same. At least she knew what to expect from home.

Food was a hard thing to find for a cub with no family. But somehow, the dust-colored cub named Tamaa'kaa-juu managed it. In fact, he was gnawing on a bone from an old rabbit he'd found dead. It wasn't the best meal in the world...but for a hungry cub, it didn't matter. His ears flicked back as something moved in the grasses...He dropped his bone and was on his feet.
Noise meant a creature. A creature meant something that could possibly eat him. And what good would he be eaten! Juu was determined to grow up big so his mother's spirit would be proud. He sank to his belly, glad his fur was the color of the dirt and dust. Maybe it was something he could eat.
That thought caused him to slink forward a little, trying not to make a sound. Food was good...

Her nose wrinkled slightly as the breeze carried a scent along with it. Death, yes, but that wasn't the only thing... There was something else; something she couldn't quite put a paw on. Damn if her senses hadn't dulled in the time she'd spent away. She was going to have to remedy that.
She turned towards the scent, keeping her own body low as she moved, muscles rippling beneath her ruddy coat... Soon finding herself nose to nose with something considerably smaller than her. "... Boo."

Juu squeaked as he hit something....and just about freaked when he saw that he'd run into something that was certainly not food. He scoot back as quickly as he could, fur puffed out and tail straight out behind him.
"W-who are you?! D-don't you know t-this is the border of a pridal land?!" His mother had made sure he understood that this was the border of her pride...before war tore it apart. And he was determined to protect what he could...

Her brow lofted slightly as she glanced down at the little brown ball of fur. "I am Mwindaji, one of the hunters who calls this pride's lands her home." She took a step towards him, leaning down to gently prod him with her nose. Cubs weren't something that she had ever been overly fond of, but she at least knew how to deal with them. "Who are you?"

He blinked, fur settling a bit. "Really? So...so Mama's pride isn't all torn up anymore?" The thought didn't occur to him that the pride here now might be a new one. After all, why would any other pride settle in the lands? He puffed up proudly. "I'm Tamaa-kaa'juu! But Mama usually just called me Juu."

"These lands belong to the Mzawa'kondo and have since long before I was born." She nodded once, stepping back so that she could look at the proud little beast. "Tamaa-kaa'juu, is it?" Her brow lofted. "Where is your mother?" If the lioness was still living then it was her duty to bring the wee one back to her, even if he protested.

His proud puff was immediately gone. "Mama...Mama went to sleep a couple moon phases ago and...she never woke up." His golden eyes looked to the ground now. "I made sure none of the stupid bald birds could get her though! And...and I've been keeping strong, so I can make her proud!"

She frowned at that, leaning down to gently touch her nose to the cub's once more. "I am certain that your mother is very proud of you, Tamaa-kaa'juu; very proud of the young lion that you are becoming." She nodded slowly before straightening herself out.
"I know someone who would very much like to meet you if you will return to the heart of the pride's lands with me." With how young he was she doubted that he had ever been there before... Or, if he had, that he knew the way back.

Juu smiled, glad that a member of his mother's pride acknowledged him. "Thank you..." At the mention of meeting more of the pride, his smile lit up his eyes. "Really? I would love to, miss Mwindaji!" He'd never been further than the borders, afraid of intruders if he 'left his post'.

"Zengea Mwindaji." She nodded once before turning to head back to the amphitheater. "Zengea means 'Hunter' and it is how most of the females my age and older should be addressed." She turned her head, glancing back. "But... Since you are such a little warrior yourself, you can just call me Mwindaji, alright?"

Zengea...He would need to remember that term. He shuffled it into his 'DON'T FORGET' part of the brain and followed Mwindaji. "Alright, Mwindaji. But I won't forget the title! Cause when I get bigger, I gotta use it, right?" Was his mother a 'Zengea' before the war she spoke of?

"Only when there is a need to be formal." She nodded slowly, making sure that her movement was slow enough that he wouldn't have to struggle to keep up with her. "You will learn. Someone will teach you everything that you need to know before you are big enough to join the border patrols."

Juu followed eagerly, tail swishing back and forth as he moved, mimicking his excitement. "I'll be a good learner then! I wanna be as useful to Mama's pride as I can!" He grinned in anticipation. This was way better than hunting rats and rabbits!

 She had been on her way out to relieve Mwindaji when she heard the sound of two voices nearing her. Her brow lofted as she waited for them to get closer, listening in on the conversation a bit. At least one of the voices was familiar even if the other was not... The unfamiliar one sounded rather young.
Both brows lofted a bit higher as Mwindaji came into view with a cub trotting alongside her. "... And what do we have here? He's a bit small to make a meal of, Mwindaji. We may just have to keep him around. Bringing him to Dohani?"""A good thing then that I was not planning on making a meal of the little warrior." She smirked, resisting the urge to roll her eyes at the elder hunter. "That is where I was headed until you stopped me... But perhaps you can make it easier to find him. Do you know where he is?"
