Maeryn stood, resting in the sun, allowing the heat to soak through her weary body. As complacent as she might seem from afar, her mind was busily at work, keeping track of those things which she felt needed her attention. Her children and her grandchildren, for one. She had met only one of her grandchildren as a foal, and while that saddened her slightly she was eager to get to know them as adults. She knew that they would be everything she hoped for them, for they had the benefit of parents who looked after their futures. She was content with her life, with the presence of Rot so long at her side, and content to watch their family grow, now that she was no longer a part of the growth. It was a good deal easier to fill the role of a grandmother at times, since the discipling of foals could be left to the parents, while she was able to give them advice and see to their hurts. Would they need her, when all was said and done? When they were all grown up, and on their own?

She was almost peturbed with the realization that life had become quite boring in her little world. And for Theia, boredom meant she'd hit rock bottom. Her family was boring. She'd wandered away from them to set out on her own for a while, enjoying her time as an independent, dangerous Kalona mare. Maybe, she reasoned with herself, she was just too clever for her own good. Maybe that was why all the usual aspects of hunting hadn't provided her with any thrills lately. She circled lazily overhead, her wings stretched wide to catch the gentle thermals of air that kept her adrift as she ghosted along.

What about that stallion, Kosomot? He'd certainly been interesting. Theia smirked to herself even as she swooped in for a landing. And, whether he'd known it or not, he'd left her something to think about. Her family and their values, their traditions. Oh, she was proud to be apart of them, and while she respected them.... she'd never met any of her other family members. Not even her grandparents, who'd supposedly started the herd itself! Delicate, sanguine hooves picked through the grass before the female caught sight of the older mare basking in the sun. Kalona, by the looks of it.

Theia's eyes narrowed with surprise as she spotted the broken heart emblem on the other's chest, her tail lashing with thought. Was this... someone from their family? "You look tired." She commented, keeping the usual bite out of her tone. Maybe today wouldn't be as boring as she thought.

Glancing up, Maeryn took note of the mare before her. She was a younger mare, one that the matriarch had not seen before, but those colors, the texture of her coat remind her strongly of her daughter and her mate. "I am indeed tired. Who might you be? You look quite familiar." Perhaps this beautiful young creature was one of Malice's children, a grandchild then? If so, she would be very pleased to get to know her, and learn more of her now extended family by way of that acquaintance. "I am Maeryn, of the Black Skull Herd." She was proud of who she was, and the ties she had. If this mare was not of her family (though she strongly suspected that was the case) it would still be useful to get to know her. And, really, she was feeling rather lonely in her old age, though she could certainly not complain of unhappiness.

Did she say Maeryn? Theia paused for a heartbeat to muse, recognizing the herd she named as well. That was her herd. This was the alpha, then? The one whom her mother had told her so much about? Huh. Though she was small in build, Theia knew that size really didn't matter much at all. She, herself, wasn't so big--what mattered is if you were smart. "Familiar, huh? I look a lot like my mom. I'm Theia, daughter of Malice and Toku." She arched her sleek neck idly, proud of both her heritage, and her appearance. Truth be told, she wasn't impressed yet, but she had enough respect to take a few steps closer. Patience, she had to remind herself. Her grandmother was almost a stranger to her, but if she'd managed to set up this whole herd almost by herself... that was definitely something that Theia could both admire and learn from. "Guess that makes you my grandmother." She grinned a little, lowering her head just enough to look a little less arrogant.

"Does it now?" Maeryn purred, her voice taking on a slightly dangerous tone. Oh, she had no plans of harming the filly. Not at all. But from the way Theia was standing, posing there, it was very clear to her that the young mare did not have any idea of what she was capable of. Her joints might be more stiff than they had once been, but she was still a strong, well accomplished fighter. She paced around the younger Kalona, circling her, testing her mettle. "Is that right? A daughter of Malice, and Toku?" Holding herself with the pride and dignity that came with both her years, and her status as the head of the herd, Maeryn observed her granddaughter with the air of a queen attempting to determine if the latest batch of younglings was up to snuff. "Are you worthy of bearing my name, young Theia? The name of the Black Skull Herd?" She caught and held the mare's gaze, her own full of the wisdom and cunning that came with age. Would the young filly rise to the challenge?

She'd be a fool to miss the change that had suddenly transformed the older Kalona, no longer noting age and seemingly gentle demenor, but the liquid grace she used to prowl forward. This could be a dangerous game if she wasn't careful--her own fault for underestimating the other. Her crimson eyes moved slowly to track Maeryn's movements, hooves shifting her backwards to keep her out of range of a potential strike. She wasn't frightened, but her arrogance had been dropped for caution, with only the gentle swing of her tail proving that the thought of a clash might be exciting. Her wings stretched themselves for a moment when the question was posed, and Theia lifted her head to squarely meet the other's eye. True, she was young and lacked experience, but she would make up for it with her spirit and determination. "I hope I'm smart enough to know that I should have turned tail and fled long ago if I wasn't." She replied, unable to help the wickedly playful grin from stealing across her muzzle.

"Good answer," Maeryn returned, and tilted her head slightly, observing Theia. "Tell me, Theia, why did your parents not bring you to me as a foal?" Were they holding grudges? Were they simply involved in their own family, or was there some other reason for that neglect? She stopped circling, and watched the young mare with a curious, measuring gaze. The beautiful young mare would be accepted either way. She had no intentions of rejecting a grandchild. However, that did not mean that this filly did not have a lesson she needed to learn.

"Now that, I can't answer." Theia replied honestly, keeping herself alert even when her grandmother seemed to settle some. She'd already been surprised once--how dumb would she look if she got a good beating because she let it happen again? "Mom talked about you and my grandfather all the time though. Told us all the things you did, and all the things we, as Kalona and members of Black Skull Herd, stand for." Her tail flicked a little faster and now it was her turn to pace, not daring to circle Maeryn like prey, but working off excited energy. "Dad did what he could to keep us in line, raise us well... Some turned out better than others." She looked a little sly, not bothering to keep the cheeky grin off her face. "In the end, I dunno. It never made much sense to me, either, so I thought I'd try to search for you myself. We're supposed to be real big on family, right? Better late than never to finally meet!"
