The Akimichi clan is one of the four noble clans of Konoha. They are able to convert calories into chakra, which they then use in their hidden technique, Multi-Size Technique and its various related jutsu.

The Akimichi clan seems to have a special relationship with the Nara clan and Yamanaka clan. For at least two generations, members of these three families have formed an "Ino-Shika-Cho trio", named after the first part of the names of the members. The Akimichi members are the Cho in the trio. "Ino", "Shika" and "Cho" are the names of three cards needed for a highly prized trick of "Inoshikacho" in the Hanafuda.

The name "Akimichi" means "the road in the season of autumn". "Aki" means "autumn", which is a time of harvest. "Michi" means street, which is where vendors sell food.

The Hyuga clan is one of oldest noble clans in Konoha. Clan members possess a kekkei genkai, the Byakugan, which they utilize in the associated Gentle Fist style. Members of the clan are typified by their lavender eyes, which lack pupils.

The clan is separated into the main house and the branch house, with the latter being subservient to the former. The branch house members are controlled through the use of a cursed seal, and the special clan techniques that they can learn are correspondingly restricted by the main house. This association exists to protect the Byakugan from outsiders, as the cursed seal removes the Byakugan from branch members upon death. The Inuzuka clan is known for their use of dogs as fighting companions. Clan members are apparently given their own canine partner or partners when they reach a certain age. Thereafter, the shinobi and his/her dog(s) are practically inseparable. Clan members have distinctive red fang markings on their cheeks, animalistic eyes, and enlarged canine teeth.

The name "Inuzuka", meaning "house of dogs", belongs to a clan which was one of the most powerful in the Chiba Prefecture in Japan during the Edo period. They were known as "dog warriors" and worshipped Inu ("Dog"), a deity representing the zodiac sign of the dog. The name "Inuzuka" also originates from Hakkenden, a novel about a dog samurai.

The (known) Inuzuka members are all named after a part of the body of a dog (nose, claw, fang), while their dogs are named after colors (red, gray, black).

The Kurama clan is a clan of extremely skilled genjutsu users, introduced in the anime. This talent in genjutsu is due to the unnamed kekkei genkai that the clan possesses. However, once every few generations, a member of the clan will be born with such enormous skill in genjutsu that their illusions can actually produce tangible effects that occur in reality. They were originally one of the more prominent clans in Konohagakure, but their numbers have severely dwindled.

The Nara clan is known for their manipulation of shadows and tending of deer, which graze in a large area of Nara clan forest. They have kept a book with medicine preparations and effects for generations. Among the medicine described in this book are the secret pills used by the Akimichi clan. The men from this family are very lazy and tend to be attracted to overbearing women. The Nara members are the Shika in the "Ino-Shika-Cho" trio.

The name "Nara" is from the real city of Nara, Japan, and is a famous place for the number of deer ("Shika") that live there. The deer there are said to bow whenever they are given treats yet also said to be very aggressive.

The Yamanaka clan runs a flower shop and specializes in manipulating the minds of their opponents. The Yamanaka members are the Ino in the "Ino-Shika-Cho" trio. The name "Yamanaka" means "in the middle of the mountain".

Bloodlines


In the Naruto anime and manga series, a kekkei genkai is any property passed down genetically through a specific clan that cannot be imitated or duplicated by any normal method, although it might be to copy it using genetic manipulation or organ transplantation. Kekkei genkai are often beneficial, and are employed commonly by shinobi to improve their chances in battle or other challenging situations.

The eagerness with which the rulers of nations have taken advantage of shinobi with bloodline limits for the purposes of furthering war efforts has taken its toll on their reputation, to such a degree that many in the Naruto world automatically associate bloodline limits with war and pain. It eventually reached the point of outright fear and hatred, resulting in witch-hunts and systematic murders of families and individuals with bloodline limits, as was the case with Haku's tragedy.

Introduced in the filler saga of the anime, every few generations a member of the Kurama clan will be born with an incredible talent for genjutsu. The clan Member's talent in that field is such that their genjutsu is completely irresistible, so much so that only knocking a person out cold has any chance of awakening them from it. Furthermore, the genjutsu is so powerful that it literally convinces the brain to copy anything that happens to the victim within the genjutsu, making it possible for the clan Member to kill their opponents with genjutsu. Such frightening power is not without its drawbacks, however. The user can rarely control the full extent of their abilities, and as such their subconscious will often regulate that power, leading to the creation of a second personality in control of that power. This personality then overwhelms the original, turning the individual into a monster that's a danger to everyone around them.

The Rinnegan is the most revered of the three great eye techniques. The Rinnegan is characterized by a number of concentric circles around the pupil of the user. Its power is said to be enough to save or destroy the world, although what sort of powers and techniques this entails have not been stated. It was first possessed by the Sage of the Six Paths, said to be the founder of the ninja world. The first ninjutsu were derived from his abilities. Pein, the current and only known user of the bloodline, first activated it during his childhood to save one of his friends, Yahiko and is also noted by Konan that Pein has never lost a battle probably referring to his Rinnegan eyes.


Ranmaru's kekkei genkai:

Ranmaru, from the filler arc of the anime, has a kekkei genkai ability similar to the Byakugan and Zetsu's spying technique, but arguably better than both. Its powers allow him to see through solid objects and create illusions with chakra circulatory systems, which allows him to fool Neji's Byakugan. It also allows him to interfere with the workings of the Byakugan, and has other vaguely defined powers regarding vision. When activated, Ranmaru's eyes momentarily glow red. Not much else is known about his bloodline limit.

Sakon and Ukon of the Sound Four have the ability to unify some or all of one's body with the other's body with Souma no Kou ("Attack of an Evil Spirit Pair"). Typically, Ukon is dormant in Sakon's body, with his head protruding from the back of Sakon's neck. In heated battles, Ukon can lend his arms or legs (literally) to add force to Sakon's physical attacks, and even split completely into two bodies. They can also merge with an opponent's body with Parasite Demon Demolition Technique, gradually killing their new host. The brothers can switch places if need be, but Ukon notes that it is not something he is used to and thus makes them weaker.

Deidara possesses mouths in the palms of his hands, which can chew up clay and sculpt it into a number of artistic, and usually explosive, forms, thus the name "exploding clay". Deidara can create clay and make the clay explode by saying "Katsu". It's unclear if this is a kekkei genkai, or merely a secret technique akin to Kidomaru's six arms.
