After all the children had been tested, and five admitted into critical condition the doctor's office finally became quiet. There was little actual time to spend in the office, most of his work had to be keeping and eye on the children and noting any and all aspects of the virus.

Most of the equipment were Acklin's personal affects. Knowing the programs and tools sped up the process of finding a cure exponentially. The room was fairly spacious, it was obvious Alan wanted a vaccine as soon as was humanly possible. After a couple of broken vials and some mixed up samples Acklin has banned any and all D-Techs from his work area.

There were many large machines, many of these were supplied by D-Corp, the few things that he did not own. All of the chemistry equipment and the extensive computer system was brought in by him as well.

Everything was tidy and sterile. He made it a point to keep his work zone completely professional.

It had been close to a week since the doctor had been called in on the job. Little was still known, and time was ticking away.

"This is impossible!" Acklin grumbled slamming his fist on the counter as a buzz came in just as he had sat down to start more research on the virus. Another child was in need of a check up on their condition, he had the enlisted help of the technicians of the corporation however it became clear after a few days that outside of their own personal work fields they were nearly useless.

Acklin needed more competent help, he needed an assistant that knew what he needed and brought it to him five minutes ago. And he had just the assistant in mind. He had employed them at a clinic a few years back however when he had to leave that clinic he had to let them go.

Now though, now he needed that sort of help desperately, and he intended to get it. He picked up the phone and dialed his old assistant's number.

After getting the phone call from her former employer, Vivian had rushed towards the place he was currently located at. She knew the man well enough to hear the strain and panic in his voice. He needed her and he knew it. She knew he'd come back for her someday. She'd been the best assistant he'd even known. She knew him better than he knew himself. Or so she was convinced.

Click, click, click. Her heels clicked upon the hard flooring as she made her way through the lobby and to the receptionist's desk. She explained why she was there and who she was meeting. Thirty minutes later, she'd finally gotten them to tell her what floor to go to.

Already rather irritated when the elevator doors opened, Vivian's mood was not lifted by the fact that she had to ask four different employees where Acklin's office was. And she got six different answers. However, she finally got the correct location and arrived at the doctor's office.

With a quick rap of her knuckles upon the door, she was soon halfway across the office. "Nice help you've got here. I can see why you need me."

The strange disease had been ravaging D-Corp for about a month now. Many of the children were in critical condition now, only one was left untouched as of yet by the illness and only a handful were only barely sick.

One child had slipped into a coma, and another one, may have permanent spinal injury. Even though all of these were horrible, it also did draw them closer to a cure.

The main thing Acklin was concentrating on now was spinal related, but that didn't seem to be the only thing affected. Organs failed, and other parts of the body experienced horrible pain in parts scarcely related to the other data. Time was running out, the kids were almost all on their final thread, and they still had no vaccine. Acklin had to do something...and the only option left was exploratory surgery.

The surgery was tedious and drawn out, Acklin wanted to take absolutely NO risks. And even though the task had been absurdly strenuous it was not fruitless. There was a large discovery that had supported his previous theory. The virus descended through the spine from the brain. It started out like a head cold though strangely it did absolutely no damage to the brain. The brain was used more as an incubator, the electrical pulses stimulating the virus until it was finally knocked loose and sent down the spine.

From the spine it attacked the nervous system before branching out to other organs from there. There was little damage to the organs and due to the medical facilities equipment that damage was minimized.

The autopsy from the first victim of the virus had left many unanswered questions, mainly why had this only left the brain unaffected? Multiple organs had failed and it seemed that the case of the young boys was more advanced. It seemed to have been stuck in the cerebral column longer than most of the other childrens cases, causing the effects to come more rapidly and violently.

With this new information and the numerous samples there is great confidence that soon a vaccine will finally be at hand!

It had taken over a month, of constant surveillance and monitoring the declining health of numerous children. It had been a long and very difficult road but the end was finally in sight.

A vaccine had been created and in all the viral cultures that had been tested it was fast, and efficient. The sleep deprived doctor grinned from ear to ear when the final tests were done and everything came back positively.

Quickly he shot up from his chair and started to holler at any nearby tech. The confused and tired technicians scrambled at the sudden orders. A vaccine had been found and it needed to be administered ASAP!

A couple of days had passed since the vaccinations had been distributed. The children all looked to have made a complete recovery and Acklin seemed quite proud of himself for creating a cure for a life threatening disease only a month after its discovery. The doctor had finished up going over all of the data he needed to write up for Alan after the last of the children had been sent home.

The office was being cleared of his equipment now, it had been a long and grueling process but in the end the doctor had prevailed, with a nice pay check to prove it. The epidemic had finally come to a close.
