This is a private RP for

RIVENER (aphismet)
and
EKUNDAYO (Mouse)

PLACE: Durem Open Air Market
TIME: Early morning
WEATHER: Sunny and warm

PostPosted: Thu Aug 07, 2008 3:01 pm

Rivener had just about had enough of all the stares. The Open Air Market of Durem was a great place to find all kinds of things, from fresh produce to yard sale trinkets, to hand-made contraptions, but the presence of a Raevan always seemed like such a novelty. Riv had only been here once before, to fetch watermelon for the family, but he recalled the annoyance quite clearly. Especially now that he was going through the same thing again. Usually stares didn't bother him so much, but coupled with the slow-moving throng of people and the difficulty to get where he wanted to go, Rivener was ready to throw up his hands and scream for everyone to get the hell away from him.

Why did Aphismet need those damned mushrooms so much anyway? So what if he'd heard from the restaurant provider that morels would be on sale today in the Market? Worse yet, why didn't the chef come on his own, instead of sending Rivener with a pocket full of money? No matter how adamantly Riv had protested, Aphi begged and pleaded, explaining that he had to stay and start on the dish right away, preparing things and making dough and all kinds of excuses. Riv had given up and agreed to come. A decision he now sorely regretted.

Angry and frustrated, arms crossed, Rivener tried to muscle his way through the throng, towards the mushroom stand which was, as luck would have it, all the way on the other side of the Market.

The stares were something that Dayo had long since gotten used to, and she'd been well-taught to ignore jeering comments from some of the mouths that accompanied widened pairs of eyes - and if it came right down to it, the Frei had been instructed where the best place would be to punch someone if the words and advances invaded her "personal space" too much. She seemed to not be annoyed by the large crowds of people, instead enjoying the fact that there were so many individuals here, their numbers sprawling out and spilling into the streets outside of the market. It had made her full and giddy in no time, and now the people she passed by would occasionally start having similar feelings, being inexplicably cheerful in place of previous impatience.

As far as the place being too crowded to navigate, the Frei wasn't too worried. She simply floated over people who got in the way.

Her guardian was at a stand nearby shopping for things she couldn't find as cheap and easily in Barton. She felt that Dayo wouldn't get in too much trouble in a place as public as this, and the eagle girl had proven to not be materialistic enough that she wouldn't be trusted with enough money to get herself a little present if she found something she liked.

Rivener frowned and growled at people by now, if they came too close. He was making slow but steady headway towards the mushroom stand, but it was TOO slow for the Scorpion's taste. Dammit, why couldn't he just fly over there, and to hell with the stares?!

Just as Rivener considered this option, his eyes detected something doing just the same, in his peripheral vision. Glancing over, red eyes widened to perfect orbs, and the hapless boy's mouth fell open. A Raevan! A GIRL! A ch-chest! Blushing already, Rivener cleared his throat and turned away, trying to move towards the mushroom stand again. Then why was he rooted on the spot? ...Curiosity finally got the better of him, and Riv turned towards the strange Raevan instead, pushing aside people until he could see her better. His courage failed him half-way, though; he couldn't pass the last few people and actually TALK to her. What would he even say? Hi, I'm Rivener, nice to meet you? Laaame.

But, the Raevan couldn't go away, not yet... He DID want to meet her (and it was only partly because of those distinct womanly assets), he just... didn't quite know how to act around girls if it wasn't with a hateful cold shoulder. Waiting for an opportunity, Rivener ducked behind a nearby stall, pretending to examine the apples he found there.

In a less crowded situation, Ekundayo's empathy might have been able to detect Rivener's surprise and anxiety, but as it were it was lost in the throngs of people around him, several of which were probably feeling similar emotions for one reason or another. She would have to instead rely on her sharp vision to catch the fellow Raevan; however, that depended on her eyes wandering over to land on him.

That didn't happen, and instead the empath ended up drifting towards the next stand over to take a half-interested look at a display of bright and fresh strawberries. Her broad wings stretched out unconsciously and then folded behind her back, as if they could tell that they weren't going to be used now that Dayo was done with her aimless wandering around for at least a few minutes.

Rivener had followed the girl as she moved away, inching slowly from one stall to another until he was standing just a few stalls away. He kept glancing at her. Those wings... Even Roux might be jealous of those wings. And her hair looked more like downy feather stuff, than hair. And she had some kind of tattoo in that place that Riv's eyes kept being drawn to, like some kind of black hole that sucked all the attention towards it.

Forcing himself to snap his vision away again, Rivener hatched a plan. Okay, so maybe he didn't know how to introduce himself without sounding like a total dork. But that didn't mean he couldn't purposefully accidentally run into her and make HER say hi first, right? ...At least it worked in movies! With some self-confidence returning, wondering if this would turn out like the movies at all, Riv inched towards the girl again, passing the few people that seperated them, acting as though he was only looking at wares and not actually trying to get closer to her.

When he found himself standing directly next to Dayo, Riv went "Hm!" as he pretended to be impressed with the berries, and reached forward, insinuating himself in the girl's vision. Hopefully she'd be interested enough to talk to him, otherwise Riv would have to either swallow his pride and talk to HER, or run off and pretend none of this ever happened. ...He wasn't quite sure which one he'd go for.

Dayo continued to inspect the strawberries, the manager of that particular stall appearing shamelessly happy that such an attractive young woman had come to take a look at his produce. Not only did her presence make him inexplicably cheerful and happy for abstract reasons that extended beyond how easy she was on the eyes, but having her around would be sure to attract some more customers. He was considering the benefits of offering the eagle girl a free sample, when another legless being showed up to take a look at the strawberries.

Hah, it was working already.

The younger Frei was a bit startled by the sudden injection of Riv's voice into what passed as her concentration, and her hair softly whirled about her face as it lifted to find whoever had just 'spoken'. Floating right next to her was another Raevan she hadn't met before - which was very exciting, and she had a hard time keeping that feeling to herself.

Her own cheer-tinged voice sounded a bit amused when she observed, "Your face is acting strange." She was always a little confused when people put up facial expressions that didn't match their feelings.

Rivener was suddenly awash in inexplicable excitement, as though elated that he was going to meet this person. He straightened, dropping the strawberry he'd picked up, smiling at her for a moment before she spoke. Once the girl DID speak, Riv's feelings once again swirled, this time to his own emotions, namely, confusion.

"Hunh?" Riv asked, quirking an eyebrow. His face-? Bringing up a hand, Riv felt at his features, wondering if something was wrong with it. "Er... What do you mean?" He was blushing lightly, suddenly more than aware that he was talking to a gorgeous girl, and she was telling him that his face was weird. Mildly irritated, Riv floated back an inch.

Dayo continued to observe Rivener, with little bits of curiosity tinging her usual state of euphoria. His sharp features started to make sense of them, and when he asked his question it was answered with a calm and approving smile. "Don't worry," she replied, "it's working fine now." And with that, for her the issue was resolved and thus dismissed.

Her gaze drifted over to the fruit on the stand, and then back to Rivener with an inquiring tilt of her head. "Are strawberries tasty? I've never eaten before." To another Raevan, it might be apparent from that statement that she had made her way to the food vendors to try and find her first 'real' food, and she wanted to make sure it was something she would like.

Rivener frowned. This girl was positively confusing. He sighed, still fixating on his face, having a mild complex about it since his skin had been cracked and flaked, earlier this year. For a second, Riv had worried that he'd started that again, but no. His face felt whole, intact. Had the girl been making fun of him, then?

Riv turned back to the berries, idly wondering if he should buy some just so he didn't look like he came here for nothing. He was sure Aphi wouldn't mind if he spent a bit of his money on this. The other Raevan continued to speak, bringing Riv's attention back to her, and accidentally back to her black-hole tattoo. Riv blushed and flicked his eyes up almost immediately. "Ah, erm... I don't normally eat actual food, but I've tasted strawberry. They're too sweet for my taste, but lots of people find them tasty."

"Yes, my berries are some of the best!" the stall-keeper interjected happily.

Riv sent the man a hot, accusing glare. Crap, this guy had seen everything, then!? Flushing darkly, Riv cleared his throat and looked away. He'd be damned if he bought anything from THIS guy now!

If this meeting became more than a small, brief encounter, it would hopefully become clear to him that Dayo didn't mean to tease or mock him with her comments about his face. She simply didn't have the capacity for such a thing - at this stage in her development, she was still far too innocent for her own good. At any case, she wasn't quizzically observing his face now, instead relatively focused on the strawberries with a bemused-looking smile on her own.

Ekundayo turned over Rivener's words in her head, idly curling and uncurling her dainty claws while she considered his thoughts. She remembered that she had enjoyed a sweet drink at the beach party earlier in the summer. Would a strawberry taste the same? Probably not... it wasn't liquid.

She still commented, expecting Riv to know what she meant, "I like sweet drinks. They taste happy!" her expression turning warmer at the thought. It hadn't occurred to her yet that she was the only Raevan in existence who ate emotions.

Based on her reactions to the scorpion so far, she was either completely oblivious to the errant sliding of his eyes to places they shouldn't go, or she simply didn't see the point of getting offended or upset at how wandering eyes would occasionally to land on things she made no effort to hide. It was most likely some combination of both; the carefree tendencies she showed at 'birth' were showing no signs of going away anytime soon.

The sudden flash of annoyance from the moodier Frei singed Dayo's own mood, and she took one last look at the stand she had stopped at. Was the shopkeeper wrong about his strawberries being that good? There was usually a small spike of anger like that when someone was wrong...

"Let's try another stand," she suggested, still all smiles.
PostPosted: Thu Aug 14, 2008 7:42 am

Rivener hardly listened to the first part of Dayo's statement, too busy glaring at the shopkeeper. The second statement, though, he DID hear. She was offering for him to accompany her, to another stand? Heh, his plan had worked! ...Even if it hadn't worked quite as expected, and she'd said his face was weird at first.

The Scorpion floated away from the strawberries, a small corner of his mind reminding him that he should try to head for the mushrooms before everyone else bought all the morels. Aphismet would be angry. (Well, mildly annoyed, which is pretty much as angry as Aphi ever got.) "Let's go this way," Rivener said, starting to float towards the back of the market. "I have to buy mushrooms."

Glancing over at the other Raevan again, (eyes flicking down to the tattoo only once!) Rivener smiled in a friendly way and cleared his throat. "So, I still don't know your name. I'm Rivener." He extended his hand to shake, secretly thrilled at touching her, and somewhat confused and frustrated at himself for feeling that way.

"Mushrooms?" Dayo idly asked in response, just a little curious why the other Raevan was out to buy them. Weren't those the spongy, puffy little white things that appeared overnight in the front yard after a spell of rain? Why, then, couldn't he just wait for some to grow in his yard instead of coming out here to find someone to purchase them from? It seemed a little more difficult and time-consuming that way.

Handshakes weren't something the Raevan put much visible effort into, even though she was strong enough to rival the scorpion in an arm wrestling match. It was just another one of those weird formality things to get past when you met someone new. It was clear that she was not too interested in those fancy little rules of conduct; her handshake was limp and aloof in a way that suggested she just wanted to get it over with because she knew she more or less had to unless she wanted to face an awkward silence.

"Ekundayo," she said. "Everyone just says 'Dayo', though." The slight tension in the air loosened and warmed a bit, reflecting her happiness at meeting Rivener. Now that they knew each other's names, they could be friends!
PostPosted: Sat Aug 16, 2008 9:38 am

"Yeah, mushrooms," Riv answered as he shook the girl's hand, noting how she didn't really give it much effort. Maybe she didn't know what a handshake was? At any rate, the Scorpion let go of her hand and nodded. "My guardian made me come here to buy some for him. What about you, Dayo?" Riv secretly jumped in strange confusing happiness as he said her name, which fit her very well, he thought. "Where's your guardian? Is he or she here? Maybe I know them! I've been alive for a while now, I met a lot of people from the lab..."

Rivener was still pushing through the crowd, although this time he couldn't find it in himself to be impatient about it. The more time he took, the longer he would be able to talk with this lovely girl and her tatoo. Errr, scratch that last part. Red eyes flicked back up to Dayo's face and promised to remain there. Although already, they could feel the pull...

Ohhh... so it was his guardian who wanted the mushrooms, and not Rivener. Well... maybe that meant there was a special kind that he was sent here to find. Dayo remembered that was part of why her own guardian had brought her up here today. "My guardian is here," she answered, not needing to pause on a question involving something that was currently on her mind. "She is small, and has green hair." If Rivener had met her guardian before, he would be able to know from a short description - a short mechanic who kept her hair dyed was apart enough from the other types found on Gaia that there shouldn't be much confusion.

She was able to detect Rivener's inexplicable happiness, but didn't think too much of it. For her, the state of euphoria she was always in was her normal and healthy state. Being around someone else like that could only brighten her mood, which reflected on the air around them. The scorpion Frei may have found himself having an easier time getting past the crowds than he was earlier; the projective empathy that Ekundayo possessed made the normally impatient people around them happier and more willing to allow them to pass.

They were only two or three vendors away from the mushrooms when Dayo stopped, another stand catching her eye. It was probably due to the rampant energy spilling from ecstatic children that made her want to take a closer look at it: it was an odd place to find one, but there it was. An ice cream stand.
