Chikalawingu stretched a little bit as her eyes slowly opened to the morning light and the sounds of the forest around her. And almost immediately she closed them again. Everything was perfect and she really didn't want to leave that. She was comfortable, curled up beside a male she had come to care for and trust, rested and in that kind of half-asleep awareness when one is awake but doesn't want to think quite yet about the day and getting up and such. Such a nice feeling. She smiled softly and turned her head a bit so that she could touch her nose gently against the fur on Jeraha's leg. His smell had become a familiar thing to her, as had a lot of him. She realized there was still more to learn and would be happy to take the time to discover those new things. New things... That's right! He had mentioned going to explore caves he knew of. That would be interesting indeed. But for right now she was content to not be the first to "wake up".

Jeraha wasn’t much on sleeping. It seemed to him that, should he allow himself to drift off, he couldn’t stay asleep long without something happening inside his dreams. Nightmares. Memories of his dark past. Either way, something haunted him each night, preventing him from ever getting a full night’s sleep. Sometimes he wouldn’t sleep at all. But, as the years past, the large animal had grown used to things being so tough. He wasn’t upset that he couldn’t get himself proper sleep. Not anymore.
He would rather stay awake than risk the horrors of the unconscious realm devouring him while he lie there helplessly.
So he was awake when Chikala had started to sit, the deep gray male turning his head to watch her wake up. It was strange having someone sleeping beside him so closely he could sometimes hear her heartbeat in the dead quiet of the night, but strange in a good way. Blinking he gave her a fond, but short nuzzle to her cheek. “Did you just rub your nose on me?” he asked, keeping his voice soft since it was morning and there was a chance she was not a morning lioness.

"I didn't know you were awake," Chikala replied and opened her eyes again, smiling up at him from the nuzzle. It had felt nice, but in her opinion was too short. But then, at least there was something. "Kinda. I, uh... Well, I just kinda pressed it into your fur. It's soft and... I like the scent," she replied and nuzzled her cheek against him, her eyes closed as she did so. And, of course, remembered herself and stopped, lying her head back on her paws to watch his features for his reaction. Part of her mind wondered how much sleep he had gotten, because she had gone to sleep before him and obviously woken after. She opened her mouth to asked and closed it before doing so, deciding to ask another time, if at all.

Jeraha nodded, smiling faintly. “I see,” he chuckled, “I suppose that’s alright then.” He probably would have done the same were he a little bit braver. There was no doubt in his mind that he would like her scent at night as much as he did during the day. It might even be enough to lull him to sleep. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to risk it. If she caught him leaning near her in the middle of the night she would know that he wasn’t much for sleeping. He sighed lowly, dismissing the thought. “Good thing I got washed yesterday, isn’t it?”
He watched her lie back down, lying his head down as well beside her. There was no rush to get the day started; just being near her was nice.
“So, did you sleep well?” he asked after a moment, “do you want to go for some breakfast or something?”

Chikala smiled up at him when he said it was alright, glad that he didn't object. Things really were changing between them. She wasn't stupid, she knew well that he probably wouldn't allow another to get that close to him, that he wouldn't act as he did around her with anyone. And that made her... happy, of a sort, almost prideful that she had this all to herself, that no one else could enjoy it but her. She laughed a little bit over his washing comment and shrugged. "Perhaps. Not sure how much of a difference it would make. I'd have to compare," she replied and tilted her head a bit to one side, watching him with that small smile on her maw. "Perhaps in a little bit... I slept very well, thank you. Did you?" She figured that they'd head out in a few moments, probably after their current conversation.

“Trust me,” replied the male with a grunt, “it’s a good thing. Animals migrate out of season if I go too long with a bath.” He sat up again, stretching his claws out and kneading them into the dirt for a moment to work out the kinks brought on by staying in one spot all night long. He always felt too stiff in the morning. Looking down at Chikala, Jeraha took a moment to think about his answer. There were two roads to consider: one where he told the truth and one where he lied to keep his nightmares from her knowledge. As much as he wanted to be open and honest with her, he was still learning.
At that moment, he didn’t feel he could open up about everything that went on with him. Maybe one day, should their feelings for one another continue to grow.
“I slept fine,” he replied as he got to his feet, stretching his back legs as he had his front. Changing the subject seemed the best course of action, “we should do something today,” he hummed, “it’s pretty nice out. I mean, as nice as this place is going to get, anyway.”

Chikala laughed as she stood, amused by Jeraha's humor. She shook herself a bit, as if physically ridding herself of the last bit of sleep and nodded. "I'm glad you slept well. And I think it is looking to be a nice day. Maybe we could do some more exploring? You mentioned something about caves, I believe. Was there anything else you'd found?" she asked and stretched her front legs out in front of her, too, arching her back until she felt a slight popping sensation accompanied by the release of some underlying tension.
She relaxed with a small hum and returned her attention to the male at her side. She smiled as she considered him, how the green in his mane and eyes reminded her of the forests she had grown up in. He was a good ally, but there was more to it than that. The realization hit her like a tree branch to the head. She was becoming less and less accepting of the prospect that he would someday leave. For a moment, that surprised passed over her face in the falter of her smile and the widening of her eyes. But almost as soon as the look had come, it had passed, and she was back to smiling at him again.
"So what would you like to do?"

“No,” Jeraha replied simply, never one to waste words when he didn’t have to, “we can explore the caves if you’d like. There are some within the waterfall that are rather interesting. They seem to tunnel well into the ground under the river.” He felt rather odd mentioning it. Like perhaps it wasn’t the best idea to explore them on that fine day. The sun was bright, why not stay outside and look around for a while out there? No, he was being silly. What did he know about premonitions and the like? He wasn’t a Seer. There was no way he could know what might or might not happen to them at any given moment.
If she wanted to see the caves, he would take her.
End of story.
He had been too wrapped up in his inner turmoil to note the change in her expression. When he finally looked back at her, she was speaking to him again, the same smile on her face that he had grown extremely fond of seeing. He smiled back, albeit weak and nothing to marvel over. A blink and it was gone again. “We’ll do whatever you’d like us to do. I’ll take you to the caves if that’s what you want.”

Sure, Chikala liked lazing about on pleasant days as much as the next lion, but the thought of getting to explore a place that she had never seen before was sooooo much more appealing. "I would like to explore the caves. There weren't many around my home, as a cub or adult, and those were itty bitty. It'd be neat to see a big one," she replied, giggling a little over his smile. She considered mentioning that if he let it grow just a little and let it last longer, it would be quite endearing. But that was for another time. For now, Caves!
"Behind the waterfall, you said? That sounds amazing! I bet not many creatures know about it. Heh, you must have been either really lucky, or were really trying," she added, getting excited to a point where she was unable to hold in the light tease. A rational part of her mind attempted to calm herself down, but it wasn't doing a very successful job of it. At least she wasn't bouncing on her paws like she used to do when she was younger. She leaned forward and nuzzled him a bit before skipping a bit in the direction of the waterfall.
She paused a few strides from him and looked over her shoulder. "Let's not waste anymore time, huh?"

“No, it’s pretty secret,” he replied, “I’ve never met another animal in there and I’ve explored it a couple of times. We don’t have anything to worry about. Heh. Not that you would need to be worried with me around to protect you.”
Indeed, it was empty. The animal hadn’t smelled any other scents. There wasn’t even anyone to kick out like he had with the other den- it was honestly empty this time around. A bummer for him. Jeraha felt like getting into a nice scuffle. All this lovey dovey stuff was emasculating him. Plus, fighting off something in front of her would be totally awesome. He wondered how good a home it would make. With that thought enough to make him blush, the animal shook his head, mane fluffing up a bit as he turned around and headed towards the waterfall once more.
“I was lucky,” he assured her with a grunt.
The nuzzle reminded him he didn’t need to be a grump to her, his small smile returning for a few seconds more. Getting ahead of her again, Jeraha casually led the way to the cave’s entrance behind the falls, trying not to let his own excitement show. Sure he had that ‘you shouldn’t be doing this’ feeling crawling around in the pit of his stomach, but he was also very excited to be spending more time with Chikala. That was a stronger, better sensation that soon over-powered the other one.
“Alright,” he replied, moving inside the cave. Passing around the water spared him from getting drenched, though the spray from the mighty fall was still enough to coat him in a fine layer of liquid. Shaking himself off, he looked around the cave, slick water-worn walls all around.

Chikala followed him carefully behind the waterfall and laughed when he shook himself, making her fur more wet than it, too, had gotten. She was feeling really, very happy this morning for some reason. When he had said that part about protecting her, she had wanted to laugh then, too, because she already knew that he would protect her. Just HOW she knew that was a mystery, but one she was perfectly fine with letting slip by for the moment.
"Now you're getting me more wet!" she laughed and slid away to shake the water from her fur.
Chikala knew she had asked Jeraha to show her the caves, but she couldn't help but lead. Well, more like walking ahead of him because she was walking so fast due to her excitement. She wasn't sure how far they had been walking when she stopped. The ground had shifted beneath her paws, something she'd never felt before. She frowned at it, the cave around them lit only by a small hole that let some sunlight in. "Jeraha, did you feel-" she began when suddenly the earth shook beneath them, causing her to stumble for balance and the rock above them start to fall to the ground.

“Well you should have thought about that before getting so close behind me!” Jeraha shot back quickly, offering the female a teasing smirk. He was much better at the half-smile that held something dark behind it than any real one. Years of practice.
He sat back, watching her shake herself off. It was rather funny to see her fur puff up for a moment, though he knew he had looked much more amusing. What with his giant mane and all. But now he was doing a bit better; his fur was drying quickly and the cave was dark enough to hide the way his mane dangled about his body while it was moist.
Letting her lead was not something he had planned, but allowed it none-the-less. It wasn’t like he couldn’t get them out again if need be. Or so he thought. After a little while, the male came to a halt, a vibration through his paws diverting his attention to the ground. Was that a shake? His eyes, now adjusted to the darkness, surveyed the rock at his feet, finding nothing out of the ordinary.
He certainly did feel it, there just wasn’t any time to answer her. Before he knew it he was rushing forward, the rocks heading right over Chikala gaining his full attention. “Watch out!” he gasped, the shaking all around him not enough to keep him from head-butting her out of the way just in time to feel something heavy conk him right on the head. Hitting the floor, he felt another rock hit him in the shoulder, others falling around it.
The male was very lucky to not get himself completely buried, most of the rocks landing around him rather than on top of him.

Chikala let out a sharp gasp when she was pushed out of the way and her paws slipped on the floor, sending her to the ground. She blinked in a daze for a moment as the world shook around them and her eyes widened as she saw the rocks falling from the ceiling. "Ah!" she cried and did her best to cover her head with her paws when smaller rocks landed on her, a more noticeable one doing a number on her shoulder.
And then it was over. The shaking had stopped and there was nothing but darkness and the sound of rocks continuing to shift. She stood and hurried to Jeraha's side, eyes wide with tears from both the various rocks and fear that the male she had come to care for had been seriously injured in his act of chivalry. "Jeraha? Are you okay?" she asked softly, bending her head a bit and rubbing her cheek against his. She wondered if he could feel the tears on her fur.

Jeraha hadn’t meant to hurt her by pushing her out of the way. Quite the opposite. But he had been so caught up in the panic of the moment shoving her was the only thing that had sprung to mind. If he had caused her pain, he would certainly feel bad about it a bit later. You know, once he regained consciousness.
For the moment, he was out like a light.
The rocks continued to crumble from the ceiling even after the shaking had stopped, though not with as great an intensity or with great numbers. Small reminders of what had happened and nothing more.
The male was lying on his side, one paw over his face more from happenstance than plan. There were rocks of various sizes scattered about him, a few piled over his hind quarters. None that couldn’t be moved with some effort, though. A low groan escaped him as he heaved a sigh, eyes opening to a spinning world. Coherence was elusive at first, the gray and black animal fighting the urge to pass right back out again. There was blood running from his head, the full extent of his injuries hidden under that large mass of fur he called his mane. Blinking, he moved his head along the ground, turning it towards Chikala without lifting it.
“Hey,” he muttered, as thought just waking up from a nap, “you alright?”

The little lioness didn't realize she had been holding her breath until she let it out in a sigh of relief, her eyes closing in thanks. "Oh thank goodness," Chikala whispered and rubbed her cheek against his again, barely noticing how she shook slightly with her reassurance that he was alright. She let her legs fold beneath her and her eyes opened to look at him, a smile that could very well grow to be a hysterical one on her face. "I, I was so worried..." she said just as soft as before and pressed her face into his fur again.
No one besides her family had ever risked their life for her. There hadn't really been a need, however, she doubted many she had met would have considered it. To think something could have happened to him... She wouldn't have been able to forgive herself if that had happened. "Are you alright? You were out of it... I was afraid..." she trailed off there, looking up again and biting her lip.
