Tiny sapphire blue hooves picked their way over the forest floor with uncharacteristic care. Gingerly stepping over bits of fallen branch and skirting piles of crisp leaves carefully. Such diligence to quiet the twilight-coloured filly rarely indulged in, much preferring to race like a hellcat where ever it was she wished to go.

Yet, tonight was different... She had never snuck away from her parents at night. They had spoken vaguely of things best left to the imagination and not encountered in reality. Yet despite their warnings and loving chastisements after her return from previous expeditions away from the family, the little filly found it impossible to quell the desire to know. She had to know what was just beyond the ridge of rock, or over the next grassy crest.. or past the line of dark foreboding trees....

Thus, she had taken upon herself her very first night-time adventure. Tiny blue ears flickered this way and that like miniature radars, desperately seeking out sounds of anything close to her. fear and excitement prickled along her flanks like that time she had accidentally napped atop an ant nest. Blue and soft purple coloured coat prickled to stand upright as if brushed by the invisible fingers of some nameless forest spirit.

She jumped at the sound of something above her, only to sigh with relief at the soft cawing of a bird. Chill, 'Kumei... she mentally scolded herself. Like anything is gona come along and eat you this close to Pops and mom....

If only her racing heart and the lump in her throat would believe her mental pep-talk.

Vytali saw particularly well in the dark. Whether it was because of his kalona heritage (although he was only a quarter), or just something he'd been fortunate to be born with, he'd always seen better than most, in deep shadows, or the depths of night. It was part of the reason, he suspected, that he so enjoyed making his way through the forest in the cover of night.

As he made his way dextrously beneath a low-slung treebranch, he stepped on a dry twig, the noise as loud as gunshot, out of place in the otherwise quiet forest. Vytali hesitated, listening closely to make sure he was still alone--it wasn't that he minded company, but he preferred to be the one initiating the contact--it gave him more of a feeling of control.

The sound of something frightful echoed through the quiet, startling the long-limbed figure. An audible gasp escaped her as she froze on the spot, one leg lifted high in mid-step.

Eeeeee... what was that? Eyes widened as she struggled to pear through the shadows close around, golden iris like the moon captured in the darkness surrounding it, much like the young filly's current predicament.

Something was here... or maybe someone. She wasn't sure which would be batter.. well, if that someone was friendly.... Swallowing loudly she carefully lowered her hoof. Something small and furry slipped past her ankle and with a squeal of fright Hakumei shot into a gallop, crashing wildly through the undergrowth, eyes wide, heart racing. A raised root snagged her hoof and sent her tumbling, crashing into a thankfully fully-leaved and thus relatively soft bush.

Gasping for breath, heart thumping painfully in her ears from the fright, she lay still, eyes wide as she peered round without lifting her head.

Stupid stupid.... fraidy cat..... idiot.... It was only a mouse....

Vyt's eyes widened in surprise at the shriek, followed by a series of crashing noises in the underbrush...and finally, a soft thud. Making his way forward, grinning, he crept forward until he was quite close to the spooked filly, dark coat blending into the shadows quite nicely. What was a foal that size doing out on her own, particularly at this time of night? Quirking an eyebrow, he debated his options for a moment.

Then, deliberately, teeth flashing in a purely mischievious grin, he spoke, his voice loud in the quiet night. "Boo."

Coat prickling as if trying to feel the air around her, she stared at the darkness, slowly making out shadows and shapes, mostly of trees and bushes but the odd bat fluttered past high overhead.

Turning slightly, head now lifted out of the bush though her body stayed where it had fallen, she stared into the shadows on one side. The sudden sensation of something close by, something big and heavy.. set her heart racing even faster, eyes wide as she struggled to see into the depths of the shadows.

A flash of paleness, then.. "EEEEEEEEEEEE!" The filly scrambled backwards, tumbling over her own feet in her hurry to get away from what ever it was lurking in the shadows. Landing on her side, legs tangled, she whinnied, pure panic overtaking her for a moment before her brain managed to catch up.

... wait a minute! It said boo... said boo. So.. it hadn't eaten her right away. If it wasn;t going to eat her, maybe it wasn't bad?

Swallowing, ears flickering this way and that, she finally got her legs sorted out and rose to her hooves, head up and turning back and forth as she screwed up her courage. "That wasn't very nice.." She said loudly, more for her own benefit that anyone else’s. But her voice helped settle her and she drew her self up to her rather.. underwhelming height. "Who’s there?" She called, voice somewhat steadier.

Eyes widening at her panicked backward scramble, Vytali couldn't hold in his mirth any longer. Laughing outright, he shifted, making himself a little more easily visible in the dark.

Shaking out his wings, he folded the dark, bat-like appendages loosely at his sides once again, mindful, as always, of the thin, delicate membranes.

"Indeed, but it was too easy to resist." He pointed out easily, a smirk still playing at the corners of his mouth. Waiting a moment more, as he contained his continued mirth, Vyt shook his head. "Vytali. What's a young filly like you doing out so late on her own?" He kept his tone faintly mocking, although the barest hint of rebuke colored his words.

Small ears flicked back and forth, though a faint frown furrowed the filly's brow when she heard the stranger's laughter. He was laughing at her. Indignation gave her a measure of courage as she frowned at the slowly forming shadow of the tall stallion. His size didn't faze her, being a young filly most everyone was bigger than her, she was used to it.

"Vytali?" She repeated.. well at least she had a name to go with the grin and the laugh now.. Her fear was fading.. things that ate you didn't give you their name so she was feeling just a little less edible.

"I'm Hakumei." She offered in return, her parent's lessons in manners pushing themselves forwards. "And Im having an adventure!" She grinned, fluffy tail wagging briefly. "I wanted to go out at night, but Mom doesn't like me going off alone.. "

Vytali quirked an eyebrow. If he was surprised by her fast recovery, his expression didn't show it. "The problem with adventures," he said, the barest of grins ghosting across his expression, "is that at your age, there's often a price to be paid." If not with parental rebuke, then with possible fatal consequences.

"So, was it everything you expected?" This said with obvious amusement, a flash of white revealing his grin in the dark. He wasn't the sort to lecture unduly (truthfully, he wasn't concerned enough as to the welfare of others to be bothered to lecture, most of the time)--especially since he was the sort who wandered around quite often at night, and had done since he was quite young.

She frowned a little at his words, looking down at the leaf litter around her hooves as she pondered it. "I.. guess. But isn't that kind of the point?" She looked up again, her unusual amber-on-black eyes peering through the gloom to make out the shape of the stallion before her. She was starting to get used to the quality of light now and was beginning to see him a little.

Something shadowy was at his side and she craned forwards slightly, trying to see what it was even as she continued. "Not yet... but so far, yes. I’ve met you haven't I?" She replied with a cheeky grin, lifting her gaze once more in the direction she guessed his face to be. The grin, flashing white and rather creepy in the darkness, helped her locate him.

“What about you? You are out here too..” She returned, small ears flicking forwards in curiosity. She was no longer afraid, talking was too normal for her to remain as alert as perhaps an adult, with more of life’s lessons learnt, would have been.

Vyt laughed, shaking his head. Cocking his head to the side as her glance skated slightly off to his side, he eyed her curiously. What was she looking at. Craning his neck, he glanced that way, seeing nothing, aside from his wing. With a shrug of his shoulders, he turned back to look at the young filly, deciding that whatever it was, unless she mentioned it directly, it couldn't have been all that important.

"Oho?" He was more than a little amused. "I'll have to try to live up to expectations, in that case." He finished on a slight laugh--if nothing else, this little one was proving to be entertaining!

He shrugged carelessly at her next question. "I've always enjoyed the woodlands, at night." he said, completely at ease. He'd always been prone to wandering, although he always ended up returning home...eventually.

"However," he continued, shifting his weight. "the night isn't without its dangers, either." This said with a pointed look at Hakumei, as if to point out that at her size, the danger was that much more. Perhaps he was getting soft in his old age(hah!), to be taking the time to give the warning at all.

(*Squeels fangirlishly* Love Vytali!)

The laugh made the filly lift her head, ears flicking back and forth though the laugh made her grin in return. "You are doing a pretty good job as it is.." She returned cheekily, though was being honest. Her heart was only just returning to its normal rhythm after his scare earlier. But now that it was, what fun she was having! Meeting a big dark stranger in the forest like this.. it was the adventure of every fillies' dreams! Or at least, it was for this one.

She tilted her head, studying him as more of him became visible to her. His movements caused the metal at his forehead and chest to gleam faintly, attracting the filly's ever-curious gaze. His pointed comment drew her gaze back up from where she had been staring at his chest.. well, it was eye-level to her after all.

"Hu? Oh I know.... Mom says that all the time." She pondered his words for a moment before grinning up at him. "But now I've met you! You don't seem like you want to eat me.. so if I stick with you, nothing else will try to attack me. After all you are so big and scary." She paused again, smiling with that childish honesty, having yet to learn the tact adulthood often demanded. "You have to be, right? If you live out here alone every night."

Hakumei was nothing if not bold, and without thinking she stepped over to the shadow-shrouded stallion and peered round at his side. "What’s that?"

Vyt blinked, shaking his head. "Glad to hear it." he said, humor thick in his tone. Idly, he wondered if he'd ever been quite so bold, even as a foal.

...probably. Although he'd never been quite as open--her moods showed clearly upon her face, shifting quickly from one to the other.

"Your mother sounds very smart." he retorted, with a soft snort. She continually amused him, with her ongoing logic. "Perhaps, but not everything at night travels alone." No point in encouraging her--but his wings, and rather impressive size, meant that he mostly did get left alone, when he so desired it.

As she moved toward his side, he craned his neck, raising an eyebrow as she motioned towards his wings, query clear even before she opened her mouth. Grinning, another toothy flash of white in the dark, he opened his wings sharply, even as he turned back to face her. "Wings, of course." he said blandly, tone carefully neutral, as he waited to see her reaction. While he wasn't as malicious as some (or even most) with his bloodline, he wasn't averse to giving others a jolt, either.

The slender filly wrinkled her top lip at his comment. "I guess.. she and Papa know an awful lot, but sometimes they don't, you know? I get bored sometimes.. its fine playing with my brother and sister but.. there is only so much you can do there."

The tone of her voice was easy, she loved her family and trusted them, but she needed more even if she didn't yet realise it. As young as she was, it would be a few years before she discovered it for herself.

The sudden movement of the wing drew a gasp from her, but it was one of awe as she stared up at the large leathery appendage. ".. wow.." Was all she could manage for a moment as her golden eyes stared at the wing flared over her. Lifting her head she glanced at him before carefully sniffing it. She didn't want to bother him, but.. it was so awesome! She had heard of soquili with wings but had yet to meet one. Vytali's were simply amazing, more beautiful than she had ever imagined.

She wanted to touch it, to see if it was as soft as it looked, yet it seemed so fragile, she daren't even ask. And anyway, even she knew it might be rude to just go around touching soquili she had only just met.. even if she felt like she had known Vytali a lot longer than the short time that had passed.
