What's the best anime-con you've been too? My brother has somehow talked my dad into letting us go to one, so I need help picking which one! ^_^; I thought I would ask which is best (and loli-friendly! O_O), because when I was in Louisiana, I went to their MechaCon, and my brother was so bored, he didn't even wanna stay for one HOUR, and a bunch of guys kept asking me if it was a French Maid outfit. A-Kon. It's in Dallas. One of the oldest and largest. I went to A-Kon 18 last year about 18,000 people. The next one is May 29 - 31, 2009.
It's always held at the Sheraton Dallas (formally the Adam's Mark Hotel).

Here's the website: www.A-kon.com

It had a Iron Lolita contest and a Lolita conference while I was there. But I didn't get there early enough so I missed it.

Conventions are a bit overrated in terms of activities unless you're hardcore otaku or find something that really grabs your interest. The ones I've been to, I went to to see the concerts and to hit the dealers' rooms. Other than that, I spent a lot of time just taking photos of people or watching TV in my hotel room.

Or, in the case of Otakon, having a panic attack. o_o;;

It's been a few years since I hit up an anime-only convention, though. The way A-Kon was organized was kind of messy, but that may have changed since they're growing/developing.

If you go, I suggest going with a lot of friends whose company you enjoy or sign up to participate in the actual lolita events being held [tea parties, room parties, panels, etc.]. It makes things a lot more enjoyable if you're not into mingling with a slew of unwashed geeks [and I don't care what anyone says, conventions have a lot of unwashed geeks running around].

^_^; I know there are unwashed geeks. I went to MechaCon on the first day, and some guys were saying that they didn't "have time to waste to take a shower." >_<

But, my boyfriend is already planning a group of ten people, because they all want a free ride. xd

o_o But, how did you have a panic attack at Otakon?
PostPosted: Wed Aug 06, 2008 6:20 pm

I'm agoraphobic. ^^;
It's usually mild, so it doesn't act up unless I'm out on my own or eating somewhere unfamiliar, but that weekend I flipped out really badly.

I was away from home with no one I knew aside from a friend [Ozzie!] and his friends. They tried to have me stay in a room with one bed and sixteen drunk strangers. I had a weekend long anxiety attack because of this situation; it started almost right after I got off the plane and lasted until I'd been home for a day or two.

The concert is where I met my boyfriend, James. He and I met because he was a friend's friend's friend. He offered to let me stay with his room, as they were all much quieter and more hygienic than the room I was originally in, and more or less took care of me while I was at my worst.

Plus, they didn't have a giant drunken orgy the first night there like the first group had. XD;;

^w^ That was nice of him!

Eww.... >_< There are orgies there? D= That doesn't happen a LOT does it? X_X;;;

If you want me to lie, I'll say no. <_<;;
I don't mean literal orgies, of course. Just a lot of kids getting way too wild with their partying away from the parents.

To be honest, though, a lot of people do go to conventions to meet, greet, and potentially make-out with/have sex with other geeks. It's a strange and sad truth of conventions at night time. It has happened at AKon every night I was there [one year, a party down the hall got busted for giving alcohol to minors], and again at Otakon. People late at night after the concerts/raves/evening events get a little too friendly with one another, and most of them don't have a decent concept of appropriate public behavior.

I mean, the guy I met was sitting with me, talking on the steps outside of the convention, and someone thought we were necking [and shouted "YAY FOR YURI!" at us, since he had kind of long-ish hair and was real skinny] because he happened to be facing me and sitting relatively close. In reality, it was so we didn't have to shout over all the people walking through the courtyard shouting at one another, not because we were all over one another. haha

Archon, on the first Friday, was a nightmare. I had a panic attack within ten minutes of arriving because there were so many people packing the center. We went to meet a friend's friends near the con suite and I thought I was going to die from all the half-naked, boozed up people walking around [many of them "in costume" since RenFests and cons are excuses for women to be half-naked from what I can tell]. Apparently, the booze-a-thon at that convention is an actual event since there are so many more adults than kids present. It was one giant room party all through the main portion of the hotel and convention center. >_<

As long as you're hanging out with your friends, avoiding late-night room parties, or just chilling with the other lolitas, you should be fine. Most of the time, those "orgies" are just a bunch of oversheltered kids getting a hold of booze/weed and getting blitzed in someone's room where their parents will never find out. There are, however, adults who'll join in, as well. ^^;

What year did you go? I didn't see anything like that, then again I was in the other town at the hotel from the other con goers. It's was a lot calmer.
PostPosted: Thu Aug 07, 2008 10:13 am

The hotels joined with the convention centers are always worst, but the Otakon thing actually occurred in a hotel about a mile away from the center. I take it you didn't spend a lot of time at the con at night, though? It's pretty rampant once the evening events start.

The year the kids were busted with the booze at AKon was 2004 [I went to see Do As Infinity, the con was secondary to the concert].

I got about an hour of sleep each night. And my friends had a booth in artist's alley, so I had to watch it sometimes. But it was fun, the only drunks I saw were my mom and her friend.

The only problem I had was a guy that kept following and poking me, but I solved that.

Everyone was friendly and helpful. I get uncomfortable when I'm at a party with friends that I've known for years, but I was fine with A-kon.

o_O The worst costume I've seen (in real life, there are millions of horrible cosplays on Google Images) was the "Girl Naruto," with all the clouds. X_X This girl used cotton balls and Elmer's Glue. Let's just say that the glue didn't hold very well... X_X

You did know, at the time, what you would be getting into, right?

Anime conventions are indeed attended by hardcore fans, but they also remember when to show that they do have manners. The ones who don't shower, or take time to wash their face every six/eights hours, or even be respectful about their cosplay (i.e. singing and dancing at innapropriate times) aren't the only demographic out there. It's the same way for the Dealer's Room -- you're still seeing these people, but up close.

As for the majority of anime fans, they don't force their opinions on you, but go to have a good time. Cosplayers especially, I've noticed.

Depending on what year you went to Otakon and what time frame you planned to stay, I would have expected the same thing you experienced. I'm very sorry you had to see that side of anime fans in person rather than on the Internet, but we're not all like that. ^-^

Mmmm, I agree.

First NYAF last year had plenty of smelly people, or just simply tried to overdo their look to the point where they smelled like nasty hair gel/hairspray a good couple of feet away. Suddenly breaking out to random anime songs (Hare Hare Yukai, especially), in front of you when the music came on, and failed at even doing the choreography right.

This year's NYCC wasn't that bad, other than the fact that some guy tried to randomly ask me out on a date, the wrong way. >>

Oh and then TMR came... that night was complete hell.
