The day seemed to be at its end. Beyond the mountains edge, the sun had fallen on its journey to slumber. The King of Crickets had loosed his lullaby, and save for one, Ayelets children were fast asleep. Haruki and Kasumei were curled up next to each other. Mizu, the protector that he was, would watch over them through the night. Even if he slept, Ayelet knew he was their guardian still. A bold father that would let no harm befall his family.

Ayelet looked on at her still wide eyed, Hakumei and smiled. The foal had the markings of dusk, yet tonight, seemed to be the last one to tire. "I'll tell you what.." she told her in a hushed voice, so as not to wake anyone. "..let's go for a walk. I have something that I'd like to show you." The moment was perfect for what she had in mind, certain they still had enough time.

She took in a slow, deep breath, smiling over to her Love. "We will be right back. We are going for a special--mother-daughter walk." she said with a wink at him, adding an adventurous tone to her last few words. She intended to stir up a bit of excitement in Hakumei.

With a few loving nips, she gave her goodbyes to Mizu. Turning to her daughter, she asked "Okay then, are you ready?" leaning in to now n** at her.

As most youngsters were want to do, the little dusk-coloured filly was reluctant to go to sleep. Not that it was unusual for the slender youth to do so, for she knew that when she did finally doze off, exciting things happened that only her parents knew about. Muffling a yawn, though she wasn't yet really sleepy, she shifted delicately where she was curled close to her mother. Ears pricked with attentiveness as her mother spoke, eyes the same as Ayelet's gazed back at he mare with instant excitement. Short tail wiggling at the idea of sneaking out without her siblings.

"Yes please!" She whispered back eagerly, and instantly gathered her long slender legs beneath her. With a huff of effort she sprung to her feet and stood a moment with four limbs splayed wide as she caught her balance. It was difficult, getting up and down on legs as long and as unstable as stilts, and the little female had learnt that in order to minimise the embarrassment of tumbling head over heals it was often best to just throw herself up or down. Depending on which outcome she was after at the time...

Once settled on tiny hooves she straightened treacherous limbs, tail flicking proudly as she looked expectantly at her mother. Giggling quietly at the nips her dam gifted her with she flicked her heals and trotted away a few paces, eager to start on their evening adventure. "Yes Mom." She whispered back carefully, eyes flicking down to her sleeping siblings. No way did she want to wake them and loose her adventure with her mother!

Ayelet skipped up behind the now eager filly, nipping her in the butt as she took a slight lead. Moving forward, she kept her little one close, making sure that she never fell behind. "Step lively Hakumei!" she called to her, craning her neck down to her level, as she did often just to look into her eyes. The golden eyes that set deep in the color of a starless night, just like her own. This mother enjoyed picking out the different traits from her and Mizu, that had blended harmoniously into their foals.

The flat where the family stayed, was skirted around the mountains height. It seemed the best place to keep the young ones well protected. With the face of rocks to one side, and a vast area of open rock surrounding, no creature could sneak up on them. Even if one hid in the edge of the tree line, they'd be seen long before they could emerge and be close enough to bring harm. Mizu had found this spot.

Now, Ayelet began to climb the steep hillside, that led to the cavern where the foals were born. Of course the foals all remembered being here, they had stayed here a few days before being let in the open. "This way!" she exclaimed a little louder, her voice still containing the gentle warmth of a whisper, even then. She wondered if Hakumei had tried to figure out where they were going yet. She grinned at herself, imagining the filly's reaction to a not-so-adventurous destination. Most children didn't like the idea of reverting back to the safe spot in which they were held. Only as adults, did one find fascination in viewing the places they were born. Yet....this was not the adventures end goal. It was just to divert Hakumei's attention briefly.

Hakumei squeaked at the n**, grinning up at her mother as the beautiful mare passed her to take the lead. With a gleeful giggle she skittered after her dam, not needing to be told twice to follow along. Golden eyes set within seeming infinite darkness, shone with excitement and eagerness, the filly's easy nature evident.

She paused at the bottom of the rocky slope, looking upwards, head thrown high as her mother ascended the steep pathway to the place of their birth. A quizzical, slightly disappointed look crossed the filly's face. "Here?" She whispered loudly in question even as she bounded forwards, chasing after her dam's tail as it flicked slowly in front.

Skittering on impossibly long legs the filly caught up with her dam, expertly navigating the terrain. Having lived nowhere but in this spot for the length of her still sort life, the filly had played on the mountain's foot enough that the difficult passage was no deterrent for the adventurous young female.

Leaping over rocks and stones that would otherwise trip dainty hooves, the filly tore past her mother and raced to the top of the pathway where the caves' opening sat.

A soft chuckle escaped the sun kissed face of the mare, as her daughter reacted as she thought she might. "This isn't an exciting place? You were born and basketed here you know." she grinned, knowing the story had been told a few times already. She slowed her pace and watched with pride as Hakumei bounded ahead of her. They really do grow up so fast. It seemed like only yesterday that they were learning to stand and walk. Now they were gaining confidence in their step and it always impressed her.

Bridging the small gap between them, in a few strong skips, Ayelet nipped down at her again. "This however, isn't our destination, not quite." her eyes twinkled as she spoke. "And we mustn't linger here, or we'll miss the show." With that, she skipped past the inviting hole, to a small trail that curved around it's backside. The foals would of never noticed it, it being so well hid around the tree that held root and rock together around their birthplace.

The trail wasn't steep, and rather than lead up, it led down, to a small grassy flat. Ayelet turned and halted at the bottom, blocking her daughters procession till she safely made her way down the trail.

Hakumei turned to look back at her mother as the sunset mare spoke, pulling a face at Ayelet's words that showed the filly clearly expected her mom to know better than to expect her to be impressed with the cave.

"Its oooooold..." Slender filly whined softly, glancing at the shadowed entrance. "We already explored everywhere in there.." Softly shadowed coat rippled under the loving n** as Hakumei watched her mom moved past her, head turning to follow until slim body threatened to over balance. Straightening the young female stared after her dam, eyes a match for the golden harvest moon widening as her mother's words sank in.

"Its not?" She squeaked with renewed enthusiasm. Darting after Ayelet the filly carefully followed up the new, unfamiliar pathway, sticking close to her dam's heels all the way. As soon as she was free of the path she nipped under Aylet's belly, too impatient to wait for her mother to let her see this new secret place.

"You must be careful here." her mother asserted. It was one reason they were never allowed to come here as a group. The flat was small, and it made Ayelet nervous. For at the edge of this flat, was the end of all things mountainous. The landscape dropped, and the land beyond could be seen endlessly.

Stepping close to the edge, she craned her neck down, blocking the small foal with a protective stance. "This is as far as you need to go my sweet." When she was sure the filly had stopped, she placed one leg in front of her, holding her back. "Now look." she pointed with her nuzzle to the lands in front of them. The trees split to either side, and the plains could be seen in the middle. The horizon had almost snuffed out the otherwise set sun. To make sure her daughter was looking at what she wanted her to see, she continued "Look to the center where the land touches the sky. You can see the last colors of the setting sun." This was something they never could of seen from the otherside of the mountain. The sun set very early from that side, only to continue its decent on the rest of the land.

"What do you see foal?" she smiled, herself noting the last color of pink smoke that settled over the horizon. The colors were strikingly similar to Hakumei's own colors on her small frail legs.

Hakumei looked up at her mother, a sweet childish smile upon her muzzle. She followed her dam to the flat's edge, nuzzling against Ayelet's side before slipping under her body to stand between her front legs. Short, fluffy mane tickling against her mother's chest and throat as the filly lifted her head to giggle playfully up at the mare.

She knew their mother worried about them a lot.. but she also knew it was because Ayelet loved them. After a quick nuzzle against her mom's leg she turned her attention to why they had come here.

Golden eyes widened as she peered carefully over the edge, ears pricking forwards even as her jaw dropped. Shifting back to press more safely against her dam she let herself slowly take in the stunning view. It made her feel so tiny and insignificant, though she couldn't put the words to the feelings that swelled with in her..

Realising her mother was speaking to her she turned her attention to the dying sun, marvelling at the beauty of the light that filtered up from where the earth was slowly swallowing the great golden disk. As the light faded the filly's eyes widened, a soft gasp of pleasure slipping from her unconsciously.

"That’s... my colour.. moma..." She breathed in wonder, unable to tear her gaze from the view until the growing darkness swallowed the last lingering haze of violet and mauve. Lifting her head to look up at Ayelet, the little filly was struck mute, wonder and a sense of belonging to more than just her small family taking root in her subconscious. Yet for now, the tiny female could only stare at her dam in stunned silence.

Ayelets eyes closed to let a shiver of contentment dance down her shoulders and down through her backside. Words couldn't express how magical it was for her daughter to be here at exactly the right time, and then see what it was the sky intended for her to see. The young ones never ceased to amaze her with their fresh wisdom for the world around them, and Hakumei had noticed the color in the sky just in time.

Letting her head down to meet the small ones eyes, she gave her a nuzzle and then started to speak. "Yes, my dear. There on the horizon, in the final minutes of the suns escape to a nights rest, you can see the colors in which you are gifted. You see, when your father named you, Hakumei, this is what gives your name its meaning." As she told the story, the mares words were slow and heartfelt, love cradling each one. "As long as the weather permits, you will always know where to find a reflection of who you are. Day and night come and go, but there is only a rare time when the night sky embraces the last rays of the sun in such a way."

A sigh escaped her, letting herself enjoy the moment of bliss. The spirits had truly blessed her. Her foals meant more than life itself to her.

On the horizon, the suns legacy vanished, and the sky was left with the blanket of night, lit only by the moon and its stars.

Tiny muzzle pushed against her mother's as the filly returned the affectionate touch. Delicate ears pricked forwards as the filly listened attentively to her mother, flicking gently as Hakumei tried to understand her dam's words with the mind of a child.

"I will never be alone then.." She finally chirped, a pleased smile on her small muzzle. "Can I go there some day? I want to go see my light.." She dropped her head and gazed at the shadow of the far distant horizon, the night making the shapes fuzzy and indistinct but the memory was forever captured in the young one's mind.

"You will never be alone." she nudged her daughter affectionately. She would always have a loving mother by her side, as long as the spirits would permit it to be that way. "I believe the closest you can get, is to view the sun from the sea. You'll see one day." she assured with a nod and a smile.

"For now my dear, we better get you back and off to sleep!" she nipped at her, encouraging her to turn and head back. "Your father will worry if we are gone much longer." She waited for the foal to start walking, and would follow in close pursuit.

The little filly nickered softly, nuzzling against her mother with a happy wag of her fuzzy tail. "I know you will always be here.." She chirped back with the certainly of a child that its parents would never leave. She turned back to look at the darkened horizon curiously. "The sea? What’s it like?"

She gave a little sigh of disappointment as Ayelet mentioned going back, but instantly yawned loudly. Blushing she peeked up at her mother with a little giggle before slipping out from under the mare and picking her way carefully to the head of the path to start back down. The dark didn’t bother her much with her mother close.. she could see alright and it wasn't the first night she had been up far later than her siblings, though usually she just watched the night time insects as she lay curled against her mother or one of her siblings.

"I know... though I’m not tired.." She said softly, with the determination of the young to never sleep, despite the urge to yawn gripping her again.

((She's so cute that even I love her. ^w^))

"Of course your not tired." she smirked down at her young one with a playful doubt on her face. Even if she wasn't admitting to being tired, surely the trip up and back would be enough to tucker the little nudger out. Either that, or the sweet lull of the sunsets memory would help soothe her into her dreams. If she didn't get to sleep soon, she would out sleep her siblings in the morning. That, or wake up with them, and be cranky and tired still. Good thing they still took naps!

As they returned, she spoke of the sea. "My dear, the sea is an ever moving pool of blue, not unlike your father. The waves curl in and out across the sands, without ever tiring, like others I know." She grinned, teasing her lovely Hakumei. "The waters also stretch as far as you can see with no tree or land to mar the way. When the sun sets there, you can see it better than anywhere else." she assured with a beam in her eye and a longing in her voice. It would be so wonderful to show them their fathers home one day.

The return trip was nothing, and soon, they were close to the pad of their resting place. She was certain she could see Mizu lift his head to acknowledge their return in the not too far distance. Even in the dark of night, she could see her Forever standing in a sea of blue, glinted by the stars and the moon.

"Come now.." she whispered. "..let us return quietly."

((Hakumei? Awww thank you! <3 ))
The tiny filly listened to her mother's voice as they carefully descended the hidden pathway and slipped past the entrance to the old cave. Pausing there Hakumei awaited her mother, looking up at the mare with a childlike wonder as she imagined what this 'sea' must look like.

She giggled at her mother's gentle teasing, giving the are a cheeky smile before a look of wonder crossed her features. "Can we go see the sun setting on the sea?" She asked in an excited whisper, ears pricked eagerly as she glanced back up the pathway to the hidden flat.

Nodding she smiled up at her mother before picking her way carefully down towards where the rest of the family slumbered. Moving more carefully than strictly necessary with a child's sense of theatrics.

Ayelet didn't miss a step. Pausing when needed to keep after her young one. The thought of one day going to the sea filled her with a deep longing. She knew that Mizu had to miss his first home, and that made her miss it too.

"My Little Love, I want nothing more than for you to see it one day." she said with a ring of mysticism in her voice, losing herself at the dreamy thought. The ocean roared it's memory of beauty in her mind. For now though, this was their home. Still a wondrously magnificent place none the less.

As they reached the flat in which her children slept, she gave Mizu a warm smile then looked down at Hakumei. Speaking with the softest of whispers, she gave her a goodnight. "My dear, lets get off to sleep now." With little to no sound, she lowered herself to the ground, waiting for the blue babe to fall in beside her.
