The day was dragging on as more and more children came and left, and came and stayed. His data and charts were growing as he gathered more data. This was one of the reasons he was such a renowned expert in the medical field. He analyzed everything the first time he saw it, making notes of specific things, created numerous hypothesis, never letting up on the research as well as the treatment.

However when more severe cases were brought in it was hard to continue this process. This was the case as the next child was brought in. The symptoms were present, similar to all the other cases so far, "What are you two chatting about back there? Get a stretcher, now!" The doctor snapped at the technicians who were trying to take a break, something none of them were getting.

The techs scrambled as they grabbed the stretcher and helping the doctor load Taren up onto it, "Ma'am, please take a seat and wait in my office. You'll be informed as soon as possible as to your sons condition." He said before disappearing out the door, Taren along with them.

-----

The room was on the next floor up, the fourth one down. It was sterile, white and smelled like a hospital. The bed he was transferred to was like most other hospital beds.

There were humming machines and trays with surgical equipment at the ready all over the place. The doctor had little time to explain anything, he went to grab an IV and begin checking the boy over to see how far this epidemic had gotten.

Silena held the small mole child to her his head resting against her shoulder as she stroked his hair. And she was terrified, and pissed. She didn't know which emotion to lean towards but from the brief phone conversation with one of the techs it seemed that their was some fault with the DNA, a corner cut. A problem overlooked, whatever it was it had made her boy sick and surly someone had to stand up and take irresponsibility. As it was she would drum into them every way to express to them what they had done. If her adopted son wasn't helped, well. Hell hath no fury as they say. "shhh you're okay." She soothed gently and kissed his cheek, thinking what a lie that was as she hurried him into the waiting room.
It had taken for any serious symptoms to show, it had just been sniffles and a bit of a tummy upset at first, a normal childhood virus, and this he had been living with quite easily for a few says but this morning he had come down with a fever and now his small rounded limbs were trembling against her even thorough she had him wrapped in a blanket.

Taren clung tight to his mother, silky black fur having lost it's normal luster looking almost gray in bright light, and the white of the rooms around them didn't help. He wanted to sleep, but his head hurt and he didn't think he knew this place, everything was a little fuzzy here and just that space past understanding. He cuddled more into the warmth of his mother although he felt so hot already and stroked her braid slowly to comfort himself. it felt so nice and silky under his hand. But then he was being pulled away and put on a stretcher. "!!!" He looked around alarmed and reached for his mother.
And then his mother was stroking his hand and telling him he had to be good for these people. He shook his head and clung to her hand. He was miserable and sick and he wanted to go home. "Taren, hush Taren listen to me. I'll be right here. You'll be okay, it'll only be a little while and then you'll be back okay?" he nodded mutely and watched the door close on her as he was carried away.

The room he was carried into didn't help. He didn't like it, and he kicked off the itchy white sheets in favor of his soft blanket brought from home and wrapped himself in that. Because at least it wasn't white and smell like disinfectant. But he watched the doctor, with quite fever clouded eyes over the edge of the blanket. Still shaking baly but that could have been from fear now. He didn't scream though, didn't shout or throw things. It wasn't his manner but he did pull himself away from the doctor firmly when he tried to touch him. "I want to go home." he ventured. Even if his mother had made him go with the men in white coats that didn't mean he had to stay here.

"Taren, I'm here to make you feel better but you need to co-operate with me," Acklin said watching as the child wrapped himself in a linen cocoon. He hoped he wouldn't have to use the anesthesia on this boy as well but if he wouldn't listen and let him do his job he wouldn't have a choice.

"Now come on Taren, the sooner you listen to us and we get you better the sooner you can see your mommy again," He tried to bargain with the boy.

The mole boy peered out at him obviously wanting to stay as far away from the doctor as he could, people had to work hard to earn the boys trust and doctors would have a harder time of it than most as his image of men in white coats had never been exactly positive. But he just wanted to be cuddled and he felt so miserable, his head pounding against his temples worse than ever and he let out a sob stifled against the blanket his eyes behind the thick glass lens were liquid and the next moment a fat tear rolls down his cheek through dull fur. He reached up and rubbed the tears away and tried to push himself into a sitting position, but felt sick as he attempted it, the room tilting at an alarming angel so he lay down again, Curled in one corner of the bed...but he was to ill and weak to fight against him so watching him slowly he mutely held out his arm to the man, shaking like a leaf and refusing to look at him. "I want to home." he repeated morsley, and it seemed he was willing to assist the man a little if it meant it brought him closer to that goal.

He didn't like the doctor, didn't like the white walls and itchy white sheets which irritated sensitive skin, didn't like the bright lights that seemed to blind him and make his skewed vision that much worse. And Most of all it all scared him. That's why he was crying silently. He wanted somewhere dark and warm and comforting to lie down in with his mother. And all he could say for this place was that it was warm.

Meanwhile his adoptive parent was sitting in the waiting room glaring at the door her son had been taken through, she looked about ready to murder. Despite her motherly side Silena didn't handle situations like this well. When she was almost in a panic of worry and was helpless to do anything. She just had to wait unable to help the worst case scenario playing over and over in her head.
You know it was a good thing the glower made most of the Techs avoide her or she much have just used them as a convenient living doll to take out all her frustrations on.
A Cigarette and a fresh draw of nicotine would have helped as well of course but even that craving wasn't moving her from her watch.

"That's a good boy Taren," The doctor said noting how nervous and scared his patient was, he was glad though that he was co-operating. Who knew what the virus could do or when the children might take a turn for the worst.

Acklin gently as he could slipped the IV into the boy's wrist. He wasn't bad at it, of course it wasn't painless but it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

After getting the IV in him Acklin put some stickers on Tarens chest and stomach that were connected to the heart monitor and the green lines started to spike once it was flipped on.

"Okay Taren, now this will help you breath more easily," The man said preparing and oxygen mask for him.

Taren hated needles, always had since his first shot, they reminded him horribly of fangs but slightly more sinister. He would have kicked up more of a fuss if he hadn’t felt so helpless at that moment, the doctor seemed to ignore his repeated request to be taken home and delivered safely back to the warm embrace of his family, his own room with it’s familiar smells and sights, not this itchy blinding white sterilized place. As the needle slipped in he let out a mewling sound like an injured cat and as soon as he was able tucked his arm quickly back against his chest. He had given the doctor a chance and he had just hurt him.

And not in his agitated state he was only shaking more, his head hurting more he squeezed his eyes shut, the doctors voice fading for a moment like background noise, like someone talking on the other side of a closed window. But it seemed to settle back to normal volume by the end, not that he had taken any of it in. And as the mask slipped over his face his first instinct was to remove it and he reached up to do just that but it yanked the IV in his arm and it stopped him. Long enough for the apparatus to help ease his laboured breaths and still confused, hurt and feeling slightly abandoned he lay back down and closed his eyes again. For now a little too overwhelmed to fight much more.

"See Taren, it makes you feel better to just not put up a fuss, it helps us make you get better faster." He said once the mole finally stopped resisting. He patted the boy on the head as he went to put some stickers on his chest that hooked him up to a heart rate monitor.

As soon as the boy was secured on the machines Acklin went about checking his vitals and jotting down notes, data was at this point the only thing they needed.

Taren was next. Acklin rushed in as he had been doing with the many other children. He went over to the boy and quickly gave him his shot. He knew if it wasn't quick and out of no where Taren would protest. And now, there was no time for that.

Once the cure had been given Acklin was off, still plenty more children who needed the antidote.

For an already quite child it was harder to see the decline in him, he just shrunk into himself, sleeping more, his lips only parting occasionaly to greet the doctor or ask for some simple requirment, mainly it was after his mother, he still wanted to go home more than anything and he completly refused to reliquish the balnket he had come in with even in his weakest moments. Althrough he had never been physicaly strong against illness and colds he still manged to weather the worst of it without serious complications, only his heart fluttering every now and then like a dying bird but then seeming to regain some of it's strength. He had also lost alot of his baby fat in the time he had spent there which had always been a defining feature with him, now some of his ribs were even starting to show. And due to possiable sgns of future kidney failure it was a gamble to give him any food to start with.
The thing that saved him was proably his age, he was reaching the cut off age for the virus and maybe it prevented it taking such a strong hold on him and even saved his life and the threats his body kept giving that his organs might fail that kept him in the critical condition room, althrough the good Dr could also be credited with keeping that from happening.

When the Acklin rushed in that morning Taren was sleeping as usual, his face burried half in his blanket, the mop of dark hair sticking out over the top. He jolted slightly as his arm was taken peering up sleepily he didn't even have time to register what was going on before the needle slid in. He let out a whine on animalist distress still having no love of the long metal spines that seemed to be pushed into him so often as late but it seemed the doctor had already gone. He blinked and looked at his arm before settled back with a quite murr and closing his eyes to go back to sleep.
