"Flowers are pretty before they get shitty, and rot and turn to dust"
Do you think that the Canon couples of other Final Fantasies all relate to one another, and is there a common theme between all of them that you noticed? Are these themes shared more often between Aeris and Cloud, or Tifa and Cloud?
Or, do you think that there is no theme between pairings and that each story is unique and seperate from one another?
I happen to believe that there is no intended theme in every game, to match every other game. I think each couple was intended to be unique and just go along with the different story line and situations. However, I do notice common themes anyways, even though I believe they are just coincidences that I wouldn't really use as proof.
Here are some common themes I noticed match Cloti:
-Promises
-Sunsets
-Shooting Stars
I don't think that Cloud and Aeris shared a true promise, or an in depth one. Cloud promising Aeris that he would take her on the airship one day is not as important as Cloud promising Tifa to protect her and help her whenever she's in trouble. Sunsets seem to be common between couples... Cloud and Tifa had the Highwind moment which included the sunset, in FFX Tidus talks to Yuna about seeing a sunset, and Celes holds Lockes bandanna to her chest underneath a sunset. Finally, a shooting star sealed the deal of the promise between Cloud and Tifa in FFVII, and in FFVIII a shooting star was what Squall saw first, and then saw Rinoa.
Also, Aeris promising Cloud she will come back to him doesn't strike me as a promise between the two. It's like she was copying Zack again, like she does many times in the game. Zack promised Aeris he'd come back, and she told him she'd be waiting. Aeris promised to always wear Zack's ribbon, and she never took it off. For all of those years. That's the difference between a one-sided promise and a real promise. =) Cloud never tells Aeris he'll be waiting.
Speaking of that...
FFVIII has the opening of Rinoa and the "I'll be waiting, so if you come here... you'll find me. I promise."
I think this could fit Cleris, but to me it fits Zeris, Cloti, and many other pairings much more. smile
These are just a few things I noticed. =) I don't think they make the pairing canon or anything, like I said I think it's coincidence.
One last thing. Tifa may have strong-armed Cloud into their promise, but it's clear that it become very crucial and important to Cloud, as confirmed in the Ultimania. He wanted to fufill the promise. He wasn't forced. biggrin
