So, I'm getting trained for my Bar Mitzvah, and I don't know how its going to go when the actual time comes around. So I just thought I'd ask what you guys did at your Bar/Bat Mitzvah's (not not the after party I mean the actual ceremony).

Nearly wet myself out of fright...

Yes it is a scary adventure but it actually helped me the purpose of being Jewish.

I got saddled with Ki Tavo, Deuteronomy 26:1–29:8.

Unlike the umteen other students in hebrew school, I decided to write a speech that did not focus on what it is to be a Bar Mitzvah, but what the Parshah meant to me. It was a little wierd, I had never given a sermon before, but I figured what the heck, lets see what I can get.

So, I read the translated version, looked at the psychical interpretations, the metaphorical interpretations the metaphysical interpretations of it all.

Trying to find the lowest common demoninator, the simplist message within the entire text. It was all rules about proper gifts and tithes to give to the temple, and the laws regarding it and certain punishments given.

It was actually kind of boring and preachy in a way. But as I thought of it, reread it and figured it all out I came up with my own interpretation.

I focused on the last part. How Moses explained to everyone that this was an undertaking, and it might not be so simple to understand but HASHEM had provided for them safe travel and land for them and removed the enemies from them. HASHEM let us endure the unendurable through those troubled times. And for every Jew, there was always HASHEM to help you endure what troubles lay in your way. Even though it might not make sense now, it will become clear when you are older, and even if you turn your back on the rules and the customs of our people, HASHEM will always welcome you back.

It's odd, considering my life and what I've been through and still am trying to settle out. But for a Jew who once cast off his Kippah and had a bacon double cheeseburger on Yom Kippor and then went and became a Discordian, not to mention a skinhead... who didn't want the love or needed the respect of anyone. When I was finally drained of all my hate and rage, in the end, I was still Jewish.

I think I went off topic.

I'd like to say I can think back to my Bat Mitzvah but it was only just in may. I got the longest portion I can think of reading : Bechokoti (sp?) ((im conservative so yes I read Torah.)). And since its the fist year in the 3 year cycle it wasn't combined like it usually is. So it had the 63 line alyah about what will happen if you do or do not follow the mitzvot. I ended up reading that one plus 2 others and the Haftarah.
The rest of my portion was pretty boring just how much each person has to give in dues for the Temple. It really didn't give me a lot to work with for the speech though. So because my Bat Mitzvah was the day after Lag B'omer I talked about that instead, but my Rabbi said I should narrow the topic down to 1 sub topic so I talked about hair. All the significances of hair in Judaism such as, 3 year olds getting their hair cut on Mt. Meron, and Samson.
I actually think leading the service was the hardest part for me though. I mean I had been up at the Bimah every week up to my B Mitzvah but I didn't know it as well as I should have and I only got about a month to practice. I did it with barely any help though!

Oh and BTW I didn't get to have a party.

xd Nice Neuf.

I did the book of Numbers; my portion was on the Nazarites. It was actually pretty awesome since I did a B'nai mitzvah with my twin brother. I was completely terrified, but it helped me to have him there.

You're most likely going to be nervous at first, but even more likely, you'll do great. Good luck and keep on studying!

It's a get out of hebrew school free card.

Oh and be ready for the flying candy.

You know from all the Bar and Bat Mitzvahs I've been to, I only went to one shul where at the end of the haftorah, the relatives launched candy at the Bar Mitzvah boy.

It was rather funny, cause most of the relatives did underhand tosses of little cheesecloth bags full of those sugared fruit slices and jordan almonds... his little brother on the other hand did a side arm fast ball across the bima getting as much chin music as he could.

Great, so now I gotta worry about getting hit with candy (which I will be eating by the way, I have a sweet tooth bigger than L's). And also, mine's gonna be weird though, Like, I'm not getting a hafotrah. Instead from what I've heard, I'm just going to lead the congregation, and then read a small bit of the torah (also I'm 16 and still haven't been Bar Mitzvah'd, yes I know I'm a bad jew, but my parents couldn't afford it).
