Flipped on CNN yesterday at about noon, just to check what was going on in the world; however even that couldn't be provided. No, they were contiually talking about how great Black in America was; how it impacted it's viewers and how it would be shown again. I switched channels to see if it was a short segment; but no it seems they dedicated the ENTIRE one-hour slot for just self-promotion over the frigging documentary. Ok, I understand since it is their station they can do whatever they want as long as they don't violate FCC standards. But c'mon.
This is where I think the FCC should step-up, one truly cannot gloat for an entire hour time slot. I know it what happens in early morning TV infomercials, but this was CNN at 12 on a saturday. The FCC should place a time-constraint on self-promotion. That way if I were CNN I couldn't possibly spend all day discussing a documentary.

As a viewer if you are upset about what a station is airing, you should inform all your friends and tell them to inform thier friends and to a boycott of the station which will massively drive down the stations Nielson ratings.

That would be awesome advice; but none of my friends watch CNN and no one would boycott over such a trivial matter. Plus it isn't something a boycott is really effective in solving, rather a federal mandate needs to be placed. Because one can say that they will stop, then after awhile begin anew.

As a t.v. viewer, if you don't like whats on, all you have to do is change the channel. If CNN wants to waste an hour talking about their documentery, spend that hour watching Fox, or your local news. I did that yesterday when all the networks couldn't seem to find anything to report other than an earthquake in L.A. that did almost no damage. I simply turned to my local channel and got some fresh news from it. With the remote control, you don't even have to get up. There is no basis for calling for more government regulation simply cause you don't like whats on. That is just plain ridiculous.

There's no way the government would get involved in this. It is their station, they can show how great they are all they want but people just might not watch. The best thing would be to not watch it so they might hopefully not do it again.

I agree that adding more regulation here really isn't the best idea (the government should be kept as far away from controlling the media as possible) but it truly is nauseating what passes for "journalism" on the US networks. With the exception of FOX (which has its own share of problems), they're way too busy sucking up to Obama to actually analyze anything. And yes, they spend as much time as possible talking about how great they are.

Isn't that all of America in a way? We are so narcissistic, it's disgusting. We refuse to age, so we have Botox. We refuse to allow imperfections, so we have plastic surgery. We refuse to accept failure, so everyone gets a prize. WTF?!? Just accept your flaws, don't try to prove everyone is perfect, don't show everyone's best side all of the time. We need to be able to point out flaws, not cover them up. The news talks about how great they are because we all do the same thing. Most Americans barely have the heart to admit when they can't do something or they have a true weakness and can't fix it. We all complain about how terrible the news media is, but it became that way because that's what we wanted. Face it, you aren't condemning some conglomerate, this is your mirror.

Not everyone who condemns the media hypocritically watches it every evening.

This isn't really an American thing though; this is the human condition. Every culture in history has had its people trying to cover up their imperfections. Anti-aging treatments have been around for millenia. No-one, anywhere in the world or at any point in time, has liked admitting their mistakes or flaws. You can't pin it down to being yet another problem with Americans.

We are the worst offenders of it in recent centuries. So we may not be the only one, but we are the epitome of it.

I can't say that I agree. I'd point to several areas of European history, where this delusion-of-perfection thing was far more harmful than it is today. I'd like to know why you think it's worse now.

Ummm, while america seems to be the most superflous culture, we are definetly not the worst offenders in delusions of perfection. I mean just look at late Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany where the "imperfect" would be ostracized, expelled, or killed. I'd say covering up imperfection is a lot less severe, no?
