It was a beautiful day, but Inali could not bring herself to feel cheerful. Not for the first time, Inali found herself, well… wanting children. The only issue was (besides the obvious- not having a mate) was that the red mare did not want to actually go through pregnancy and the ordeal of giving birth. The idea of distorting the figure she was so fond of was distasteful to her, and the blood and pain… Well, she didn’t want any of that! Plus, what stallion could still find his mate attractive when she was round and fat with his spawn? Supposedly the stallions must have, for Inali had seen happy couples, but the very idea seemed strange to her.

If only she could borrow someone’s foal for a few hours! She needed to try motherhood out for herself before committing to anything. There likely were stallions who would do their part to get her in foal with a minimum of fuss, but all sorts of conflicts arose from that. No, Inali decided. What she needed to do was borrow a basket or a foal for a few hours, and see what it was like. Motherhood had to be easy, right? All you had to do was feed and love your foals, who would love you in return and be perfectly tame, as long as you instilled a sense of who is boss in the family early enough. Oh, poor, deluded Inali!

Bending her head down to graze, the red mare continued to be deep in thought. She would have to call upon old friends, to see if they had any foals they would be willing to part with. The alone time would be nice, wouldn’t it? They couldn’t object. Not knowing how deep maternal bonds truly ran, Inali supposed that most mares would readily part with their foals in the blink of an eye, in return for alone time with their mates. Foals had to grow up and leave the nest some time anyway. Yes, that’s what she would do. Inali would find an old friend, and simply ask for a loan of a foal for a few hours.

Plan in mind and filled with purpose, Inali moved on to a patch of tart clover, making sure that her energy was full for when she took home her own little bundle of joy (at least for a few hours).

The colt toddled around, an apple clamped in his mouth. His human had brought him here, knowing he need his...'Me Time' as she called it. What ever that ment. She tended to ramble...and he had no idea what she was saying. That silly human was about all he had...Save for the other human...(Human 2, as she was dubed) and her herd. His mother had left him in the care of Human 1, saying she would see him soon. He'd seen her maybe once or twitce after that. It didn't bother him THAT much...So he didn't have a mother figure...he had plenty of father figures. He could manage.

He dropped the apple, munching on it for a moment before looking up. There, he saw a red female. He blinked, ruffling his wings. So no...'Me Time'. He shrugged, going back tohis apple. One thing that human said he grasped the gist of was simple, really. Strangers, more often that not, weren't the best people to just stroll up to.

Scanning the horizon for anything of interest, Inali's eyes soon fixated on a small, soquili shaped blob somewhere in the distance. A very lonely small, soquili shaped blob. What in the world could it be? Curiosity did not have to wait to get the better of the red mare, as she broke into a swift trot, approaching what soon resolved itself to be a young alicorn foal. What was he doing here by himself?

"Hello little one. I'm Inali. Are you all alone?" He certainly looked all alone, but if he had a winged parent, it could be nearby. Scanning the skies, Inali saw nothing, but remained on alert. All she needed was for a vengeful mother to come swooping down, trying to defend her baby against what was all good will.

"It can be rather dangerous out for one as small as yourself. Kalonas would just eat you right up." Not that there would be kalonas on this fine, sunny day, but the warning remained. This foal shouldn't even have listened to Inali, though she desperately wanted to earn his trust. He was a cute little thing, with his one blue leg and little red and black wings. He would be a handsome stallion one day, if he lived that long. Which (in Inali's mind) he wouldn't, if he just kept wandering about like this!

Ok...so the stranger approached him. She didn't seem to want to eat him...but you never know about some people. He looked up at her, blinking slowly. Judging by her tone, she didn't seem like a threat. "Hi there. Tyzaeph...But you can call me Ty. I don't have a horse companion, no...But my human is somewhere...Probably asleep." He shrugged, "The Kalona thing...eh. Its too sunny for them here...I don't worry about it to much...no sence to live constatly in fear..."

He took another bit of his apple, flicking his wings again.

Asleep? Well, that wasn't terribly responsible of the human, but Inali had limited faith in them anyway. Poor little guy, all on his own! Not that he seemed to mind though. Hmm, curious. Did foals... did they actually like to leave their mother? There was so much Inali had to learn!

"Those are wise words from a foal Ty. You are right, of course." Indeed, Ty's statement was wise. How intelligent were foals? Inali had always thought they were rather dim, and only became intelligent upon adulthood (magic, perhaps), but she was quickly having to revise all her opinions about the spindly legged creatures.

"Do you want to play a game?" Struggling on new territory, Inali suggested something she knew all foals liked. Games were good, right?

The colt just stared at the red female for a few moments. Play? Why on earth would he want to play? With an adult no less? Granted, he'd been known to enjoy a rousing game of tag with his younger friends, and the occasional game of 'scare his human half to death'. But he never played with an adult. Why would he? More often than not, most adults were faster than he was.

"Play?" He sat down, head tilted as he watched the adult. "Uh...no offence ma'am...But I usually only play with my family or other foals...or adults I know. I've only just met you...and I don't know if I can trust you." Blue eyes scanning her. "Your not to seasoned with foals, are you?"

Mother had always said he had knack for reading others...

Ack! How did the little one guess? Eyes growing wider and wider until they reached an almost comical point, Inali found herself growing emotional. No, she wasn't experience with foals at all, but she wanted to be so badly. Who knew that her mothering instincts would kick in? Oh, she wanted to be a mother, but it seemed not to be coming very naturally to the poor mare.

"I want to be a mother, one day. But... no. I've never really spent much time with foals. But I want to!" Inali truly did want to, but her own ignorance had swiftly proved itself to be her downfall. She hadn't reckoned on foals being so intelligent, or so wary. What else would this little one prove that she hadn't thought of?

"I'm sorry." Lowering her head, Inali blinked away what felt like tears, steadying herself so she was once again the strong mare. Her reserve of strength was always there to be tapped into, and Inali had it now. "I... I don't know. I thought you would be different. I've played with a few foals, but I guess they were much younger than you." Come to think of it, the foals Inali had played with had barely been able to speak yet, and had still been on wobbly legs. This one was obviously much older.

Mother had also said he had what she called....Foot-in-mouth syndrome.

"Ah...Inali I didn't mean to upset you! I'm just...not too trusting." He watched her, hopping to his feet to nuzzle her leg. "You can spend time with me, if you want." He had to laugh...He was a pretty old foal. If that made any sence."I've been a foal for a long time..." He grinned at her. "So I think I can answer your questions."

He always liked to help someone. If he could impart his wisdom of foals on her, he'd have filled his 'nice' quota for at least 3 months!

"Oh, it's not your fault. I'm just a bit emotional lately." Inali suddenly found herself speaking to Ty as though he was an adult. It was growing harder to think of him as a foal- not when he spoke so wisely. He sounded more intelligent than she did! He certainly seemed to have more common sense than poor Inali, who always seemed to be lacking in that valuable characteristic.

"I'd like to spend time with you, if you don't mind. I just don't know much about foals, I'm afraid. I want one of my own." She was repeating herself, she knew, but Inali was growing more comfortable with Ty, and her words sounded less forced and less emotional. He was a sweet little thing, really. And not so little. Inali had to stop thinking like that! He was probably on the verge of adulthood, judging by the way he talked.

"I know how foals come about and what not, but I'm not sure I can make that jump yet. I don't know how to deal with your little sort. Play and mothering... It's all so foreign to me!"
