Stepping out from the main building of the Shirabyoshi complex, one is immediately hit with the strong smell of satsuma and cherry blossoms, fresh in the balmy weather of springtime. Many trees and colorful plants reside in this place, easily offering a hundred places to hide, should one be seeking a quiet afternoon alone. Here and there are stone benches, littered about this place, with room enough for two. Many come through this place in search of quiet, beauty, or inspiration.

A small, well-worn path winds through, guiding those on an afternoon stroll. However, not all visitors choose to stay on the beaten path...

Miharu-gozen sat in the depths of the garden, staring past the flowers up at the clouds in the sky. She neatly folded her hands in her lap, as a swell of sheer happiness flowed inside of her. "Mmm," she hummed, a soft sound that came from deep in her throat.

The garden was as tranquil as ever. It was the perfect place for someone as shy as Miharu to escape to, to get away from the pushy Samurai Lords, from merciless court gossip, or from the general competition that accompanied the rank of Shirabyoshi. In the garden, she often forgot about those certain trials and pressures. This was where all of life's chains were loosened, if only for a while.

Her warm gaze shifted back to the sakura trees she sat under. It was summer now, past the time for the famous Cherry Blossom Festival. The young woman reflected upon that festival, remembering how all of the petals had fallen in successive gusts of brilliant white. It was a two-minute display that she looked forward to each year. The same tree that had shed so many petals then was now full of healthy, deep magenta leaves that shaded the sunlight in irregular patches from her heavily made-up skin. A ghost of a smile appeared on her lips as she peered back down into her lap, at her delicate Shirabyoshi hands.

"Done for today." Atsuko chirped happily, wiping her brow on her sleeve. The young girl stood up, stretching her arms as she stared contently at her work. "Everything is so clean now." She murmured to herself in pride. Of course, it was unlikely that it would stay like that for long, but at least for now everything was neat and tidy.

What to do now, though? Atsuko hadn't been here for long and, aside from her chores, she didn't know what else to do. Most of the time she would just scurry back to her room and read, but it was far too beautiful of a day today to spend indoors. "I wonder if I could go outside?" She asked thoughtfully to nobody in particular. Maybe she'd get to meet one of the other girls who were maids in this place too! After all, it was getting boring spending day after day alone.

Outside it was, then. When she had first arrived, she had heard about the lovely garden here. Atsuko had only caught a brief glimpse of it before but now that she had free time...well, why not?

Clasping her hands together behind her back, the maid started in what she hoped was the direction of the garden. It didn't take her long before she realized that she was indeed going the right way - the scent of flowers reached her nose as she neared the garden. Finally, she stepping out from the building, she found herself surrounded by vibrant colors and scents.

"It's more beautiful than I thought!" She exclaimed in wonder, unaware that someone else was near. There had never been gardens like this back where she used to live.

"Hi!" Mizu piped, popping up from behind a bit of shrubbery in a fashion rather similar to a meerkat. One could almost see her little ears twittering as her bright, large eyes grinned at Atsuko.

"Hey, you're my age, correct? Isn't this place neat?" She was grinning appreciatively now, taking her attention away from the girl in front of her and letting it wander over the flowers and trees and beauty. When she turned back, however, her face was set in a lined, grim [removed](which was comic, considering her young features).

"Guess what I heard? I heard that this place is haunted. Like... with all the old Shirabyoshi who still want to perform, you know? I heard some of the older girls whispering that they saw a woman in white dancing in here last month. Isn't that neat? Oh, I'm Mizu, by the way. It's nice to meet you!"

Mizu's fast talking and nosiness had gotten her in trouble before, as expected. Her sheer blissful ignorance of her surroundings--and her situation--had also gotten her in trouble. Miharu could have likely been standing directly behind her and the talkative child wouldn't have noticed.

Ah, tranquility. Reizei walked calmly through the gardens, his eyes lingering on the flowers in full bloom. Spring was a beautiful season. The emperor felt a demure smile tugging at his lips as he continued to walk through the garden, reveling in the glory of the flora.

It had taken a lot to get here. Alone. Reizei couldn't help a small chuckle as he eyed the outfit he was wearing. Simple garb for a nobleman. Unless one had been in the emperor's presence they would not know him for who he truly was. To anyone he encountered here in the gardens he was sure to be a mere nobleman of questionable rank. He was no emperor in this clothing. Which was why his personal attendants had thrown a fit. They would have to deal, however, for Reizei had wanted peace and quiet.

Peace and quiet. Until he heard voices. The emperor paused as he rounded a twist in the well-treaded path, looking silently on to the two little girls he'd just stumbled upon. One had hair the color of fire and the other looked rather small. Both maids, no doubt. Perhaps either one of them would someday entertain for Reizei himself.

"Haunted, you say?" The emperor inquired in a demure tone, somehow intent on striking up a conversation with these small things.

A yelp escaped the girl's lips as she was suddenly greeted. Jumping, she stumbled backwards, falling promptly - and extremely ungracefully - on her bottom. Flushing, she opened her mouth to speak, but promptly shut it again a the other girl began to talk.

While listening, Atsuko looked at the other girl curiously. Another maid, like her? She smiled politely, and give a little dip of her head despite the fact she was still sitting on the ground. "I'm probably around your age, yes." She laughed softly, "And this place is really beautiful. I have to say that I'm pretty impressed by it."

Her face seemed to perk up with interest as Mizu continued, and she tilted her head thoughtfully. "Haunted? Really?" Maybe she'd try to catch a glimpse of this said spirit sometime. Mizu certainly did seem like a nice girl, if not a little over energetic. Not that that was bad - on the contrary, Atsuko hoped that this maid would end up becoming one of her first friends in this place. "It's a pleasure to meet you as well. I'm Atsuko."

It looked as if she would have said something else when another voice spoke - one that certainly didn't belong to a girl their age (or anyone their age, for that matter). She stared up at the older man, and grimaced. 'A noble! And I'm just sitting on the ground like this!'

Scrambling up hastily, she pat off her rather worn clothing, giving a little bow. "So it seems?" Atsuko said hesitantly, looking at Mizu. She wanted to know more about this haunting, but was it alright to talk about it in front of a random nobleman?

Miharu was startled to hear voices close behind her, and she cautiously peeped out from behind the tree. It was then that she saw a nobleman, and the two small girls. Of the two, the one with fiery orange hair caught her attention; perhaps she was new here. The nobleman was not one she recognized right away, and she stepped forward to greet them in hopes of making new acquaintances. Perhaps she would match names to faces if she spoke up. The shirabyoshi didn't mind company right now, after all.

"Good afternoon," she murmured in her quiet voice, "I thought I was alone for a moment, but your conversation reminded me that one is never alone in these gardens." The ghost of a smile appeared on her painted lips, and one could not tell whether she was truly joking. In truth, Miharu herself had never heard of such hauntings in the garden, and wished to be enlightened. She supposed that the gardens weren't a terrible place to haunt. Another appreciative glance around confirmed its surpassing beauty.

She could more clearly see their faces now that she was closer to them. The two girls were most certainly maids, she mused. The one with orange hair, too, seemed to have some Japanese features mixed in with her foreign features, the part of a Japanese parent, surely. The nobleman seemed more familiar now, and Miharu was sure that she had seen him somewhere before, but could not yet place him. She would remember such an attractive face, at least.

A swift, proper bow followed her words. "Forgive me for not introducing myself first and foremost," continued her fluid voice, "I am Lady Miharu."

Mizu was delighted. Whether for better or worse, she had grown to accept and even enjoy attention, as she had been showered with all sorts of it since she was little. It was usually negative attention, true, but moments like these were fantastic.

"Oh, it's wonderful to meet you, Atsuko! And you, Lady Miharu, and you, um, Sir." Well, the character with the smooth voice and the somehow commanding silence was interesting. And the Lady! Mizu admired them both, though in different ways, immediately. With her signature sharp, wide grin, nearly quivering with excitement, she plopped on a stone bench and sat cross-legged, eyes ablaze, the tale already twirling in her head. She seemed unphased at the arrivals, only pleasantly surprised that her audience had increased.

"Yeah, that's what I heard. Well, the whole haunted thing began like fifteen years ago, when a new ruling family overthrew the old one down at the port. There were Shirabyoshi at the palace, of course, and it was a big celebration for the Spring Festival. They performed with their hearts on the stage, every movement precise, every poem and story capturing. One Shirabyoshi--a dancer, they say, stole the show. She danced as though she were walking on clouds, and was so beautiful that the audience could hardly breath. It was right at her crescendo, the moment of her dance where the music was getting faster and faster and the crowd was wide-eyed, when the assassins broke in. Everything went dark, she vanished, the audience screamed, and then the building went up in smoke. Days later, after picking threw the wreckage, her secret lost love, the son of this very palace, found her necklace-- a beautiful pearl necklace that he had bought for her, burnt in the ashes. He knew she was gone, and he vowed that he would find her killer or perish trying. He was searching for a month when he found the killers-- and he demanded a duel. The fight was magnificent, and so well matched, but just when her lost love was about to strike the final blow, the killer's acquaintance struck him from behind, and he joined his love, whispering only 'I'll meet you in the spirit world' as his eyes dimmed. Little did he know, however, that his beautiful love was not waiting for him, for she had stayed in our own world. She never did finish her amazing dance, the one that was sure to go down in history, and she simply couldn't leave her time on Earth without it. And so, here she stays, in the palace of her perished love, sweeping the halls in the ghostly white and red gown she had performed in, dancing in hopes that someone will see her final performance so that she can go home in peace."

Her father would be proud of that little speech, she thought. He had been working with her for years now on story-telling, ever since she was little, and she was drawn to the art like a moth to the flame. Her strange, light eyes traveled dramatically over each of the faces there, her knees now hugged tight to her chest, her smile both sweet and slightly sinister.

Unlike Atsuko, naturally, Mizu didn't really think about things before she did them, and didn't consider for a single, flickering moment whether or not such a tale was quite appropriate for a noble, or a Lady such as Miharu. All she was thinking of was the ghostly dancer and her passionate story, and all the wonderful details and emotions of such a tale. And, perhaps, she was thinking of her small audience's reaction.

Reizei smiled briefly to the young girl as she stood though he found his attention quickly diverting over to the shirabyoshi who stepped out from behind the tree. "Good afternoon," He greeted the shirabyoshi back calmly. He couldn't say that the woman looked even faintly familiar; it was possible that she'd never danced before him, for he'd probably recognize her at least slightly.

"Miharu-san," Reizei wore a half-smile. "I am Kurodo no Mikado." He spoke coolly, taking on the name of one of his attendants. Mikado-san wouldn't mind, now would he?

Reizei nodded to Mizu, clasping his hands as he looked to her when she began her story. It obviously piqued his interest... and his amusement. "I see, Mizu-san," He spoke once the tale was finished. "I have never heard that story, though this has always been my home." The emperor felt his lips twitching up dangerously. His amusement had to be evident.

Her gray-blue eyes seemed to widen a little upon the appearance of the Shirabyoshi. She looked up at the woman somewhat stunned, before bowing quickly. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Miharu-sama." Atsuko nearly squeaked, looking rather unnerved right now in her attempt to be as polite as possible. "And you, Mikado-sama." She added with another bow. Maybe she was overdoing the respect, but oh well. It wasn't everyday she found herself in the company of a cheerful maid, beautiful Shirabyoshi, and rather elegant noble.

She listened intently to Mizu as she began to tell the story, ans by the end if it, she found herself frowning. Not in disapproval however, but more in unhappiness at the ending of the story. "Oh - how sad!" Atsuko was never one for tragic endings - they always left her feeling rather depressed herself. 'If that story was true,' She thought to herself, 'Perhaps I could seek out the Shirabyoshi and help her rest in peace.'

Oh, how naive the girl was. Still, the thought stuck in her mind as she peered up at Reizei. "You've never heard this tale before, Mikado-sama?" She asked curiously, looking thoughtful. Or maybe it really was just a legend.

Mizu-san? Mizu's face lit up just a little more at the mention of it. Everyone-- from maids to the cooks to the few Shirabyoshi that she had met referred to her as '-chan', and though it had irked her at first (she was thirteen now!), she had long grown used to it. Because of this slight sign of recognition, Mizu decided that Mikado was someone she liked, and she decided then and there that her usual tricks--little white lies, exaggerations, and the like--were not to be played on him, or the elegant Miharu, though perhaps she could entertain the sweet Atsuko with a few.

Mizu was not perceptive, not in the traditional sense. She didn't notice things, really, but she noticed emotions. And she noticed Mikado's (or who she thought was Mikao) amusement, and she noticed Atsuko's apprehensive compassion. She decided to play off of it, if just a bit.

"Oh, few have heard this story." She said, but the seriousness of the tale was close to gone. Her grin was more goofy than anything at that point, and it was clear with the 'oh-you've-got-me' resignation in her eyes that she wasn't trying to sell her story to Mikado any more. "They say that only a few of the students have seen her, and I've only heard it from their whisperings. It is said that even the emperor himself doesn't know of the ghostly dancer!" And with that, something of a giggle escaped her lips, and she let her feet dangle off of the edge of the bench, her toes just meeting the ground.

"My intention was not to interrupt you, by the way, Miharu-sama." She added once the giggle had faded, her own small attempt at respect, though her smile was still there. "So, I apologize if I did." After all, the Shirabyoshi had been quietly contemplating when Mizu had popped out of the bushes. Of course, she was probably interrupting Atsuko as well, but little Mizu didn't really think of that.

"I am most pleased to make your acquaintance, Mikado-sama," Miharu murmured smoothly in reply, as was fitting for a shirabyoshi like her to address a nobleman as he. She couldn't help but wonder as a memory stirred in the back of her mind—somehow she thought that she knew him from somewhere else. However, it seemed now that she must have been mistaken, so a small smile covered her uncertainty.

It was then that her attention was diverted to the mention of the story that had originally caught her ear, and she listened with rapt attention. As the story wore on, she found that it held distinct parallels and similarities to the stories she herself so often heard when she was a student. Upon this realization, a small, knowing smile spread across her face. Ghost stories had always been popular amongst the girls in the academy, for they provided a small measure of excitement in the often monotonous lives of the maids and students.

"I heard a similar tale in the academy, Mizu-san," she offered mildly, "Though, as a young student, I must admit that I never laid eyes on this ghost, myself." This much was true, and since that time in her childhood when ghost stories were rampant, she had never seen any evidence of a dancing ghost in the gardens. She of all people would have seen such a ghost, given the hours she spent in the gardens. How amusing it would be if the alleged ghost turned out to be a garden regular such as herself! Surely it was not unlikely for a shirabyoshi to utilize the garden's tranquility as a stage for dance.

Miharu found the conversation between the two girls to be refreshing. There was once a time that she too spoke like that, and acted as such, and it was not frowned upon. They all glowed with such innocent hope for the future. "How long have you two been in the academy?" she inquired gently. The art of the shirabyoshi was growing far and wide, she presumed, since she encountered more and more young maids nearly every day now.

Reizei nodded quietly as Atsuko bowed to him, letting a small smile flicker across his face at her question. "I must admit I have not," He replied almost apologetically. "Of course, there are many tales around the shirabyoshi, Atsuko-chan." The little girl seemed but a child to him; he couldn't help the use of honorifics. "The trick is to choose which ones to listen to." Reizei advised her.

He turned his gaze to Mizu as she spoke, his amusement remaining. "Surely that's not true, Mizu-san. The emperor knows everything." He teased as any other nobleman would. This girl would certainly make an interesting shirabyoshi if she made stories like that up regularly.

Reizei nodded to Miharu as she expressed her pleasure at making his acquaintance. He believed things were going quite well as of now. He didn't do this much and certainly not where there might have been people around, but this shirabyoshi and these girls really didn't seem to know who he was. His image was not much projected. People rarely saw him; they only spoke of him, many speculating on his looks though it was at least rumored the he was good-looking.

Mao dusted off her dirty uniform, gazing longingly at the sun-drenched trees outside. Her back hurt from climbing under and around the many furnishings of the palace, dusting, sweeping, and scrubbing- as a new girl, she was given these lowliest of tasks to teach her humility and proper respect.

Not that she needed it- ever-stoic Mao was content with her fare in life, and pleased with her newfound peace and sense of home in the Shirabyoshi complex. The dreams and aspirations of the other girls were inspiring, and she felt more positive than she'd ever before in her 14 years of life.

Sprinking water on one final bamboo sprig, she resolved to take an appreciative stroll in the gardens beyond the door panel, carting the large, cumbersome water-jug along in a pretense of work.

A few moments into her walk she cursed her bad luck as she rounded a corner to be confronted with two of her fellow maids, a Shirabyoshi, and a strange man. She quickly made like she was sprinkling water on the flowers before her, hoping they wouldn't notice her shirking her duties as she allowed their conversation to waft in her direction.

Now would be the appropriate time to blush and look down and mumble an apology for her brash words. Though it wasn't a terrible crime to suggest that the Emperor was lacking in even the slightest of fields, it still was not exactly proper to mention such things. But Mizu, naturally, didn't blush and look down. Her cheeks remained their same exact pearly rose, and her odd blue eyes were looking curiously at Mikado.

"Oh, of course. Forgive me." The traditional correction streamed almost automatically from her lips, but a smirk still pulled at the corners. And with a nod of respect to the man she thought was named Mikado, she let her attention drift to Miharu's question.

"Not long, Miharu-sama." She answered, her legs beginning to swing absently and her eyes still bright and curious. "I started less than a year ago, I think." She couldn't remember the exact month that she had joined, only that it was a pretty day and it was spring. Wasn't spring approaching again? The weather was certainly nice, and quite cool. Or was it winter that was coming up. Mizu's bright eyebrows bent forward a little bit in concentration. Not knowing something was frustrating, and so she planned to sneak into one of the student's quarters to see one of the calendars tomorrow. Then she would know.

But then she was focusing again, and turned her head curiously to Atsuko. "And what about you, Atsuko-san?" The distracted Mizu didn't notice the quiet Mao, but she would soon. Things--especially people--couldn't escape her for long.
