The absolute WORST thing for you to do during an audition is freak out. The people who go in there calm and just play away are the ones who make it, the people who are jittery and not sure of themselves don't make it.

Practice anything that makes you work, but don't wear yourself out. Again, the worst thing you can do is panic.

I killed my audition for marching band for freshman year. I performed the song okay, but we have a metronome test, you don't play any other note except concert F, a metronome goes while you play. The whole point is is to make sure you can even count. I panicked, and lost my grip on the beat, thus killing my audition.

don't worry about it! that's nothing, just practice what you can until you see the etudes, them practice those like mad, everyone else auditioning will have the same issues

When going into an audition take a few deep breaths and remember that you know the music so what do u have to worry about. The judges will try to mess with your head when u try out. At the tryouts for band camp the judges for trombone put a toy skeleton on the stand to mess with me and the other trombones. Just imagine that u are in the place that u practiced your music. If they do sight reading at a tryout and you have trouble with sight reading, dont panic because it is often easier that it looks, keep the beat and if u mess up try to keep the music going. cool

Not really freaking out, more like questioning whether I will get into the high school honor band, seeing as it is my first year trying out and I'm one of the youngest and least experienced.

no need to freak. i was so scared about my audition and even though i only knew one of my scales and messed up on the song >.>... i still got it to my school of choice. even if you dont think you're ready, go in and have fun doing it

I auditioned a few years ago for a district honor band, and completely lost it about halfway through - breaking down in tears in front of the judge doesn't exactly help confidence levels. neutral But I tried again last year and made it in, even though my music wasn't as good as it could be. As long as you feel really confident and at least act like you know what you're doing, then the judges will notice. Feeling comfortable with your music is the most important thing.
